Dear Sir

Some two months since, I resigned the Office of Postmaster in this place, and reccommend a Mr Halterman as successor, which I think would have given satisfaction to the community, but Mr H. has since sold his property and is going to Missouri, (of which I have notifide the Department) -

Mr M. L. Knight is making an effort to get the appointment, and by the earnest solicitation of the leading business men of the place, (and others) I have withdrawn my resignation - by what the people say to me, I am satisfide that nine tenth of the patrons of the Office would be very much opposed to Mr Knight having the Office. I represent this to you, by request of a number of our business men - a Mr H. R. Turpin, - who would give no better satisfaction, - also wants the Office - in noticing this small matter, you will confer a favor upon many of your personal friends, as they will show by a petition if desired - Our M. C. you know is a Cop

yours very Respectfully, Alonzo Barnes P M

Resigned sometime ago in favor of Halterman. He is going Mo and Barnes withdrew his resignation.
Says 9/10 of the people wish him to retain it and are opposed to M L Knight who is also an applicant for the place.

Turpin & Knight are incompetent to fill the office correctly.

Hon Richard Yates

Washington D C

Alonzo Barnes. P M

Prairie City Ill

Resigned sometime ago in favor of Halterman. He is going Mo and Barnes withdrew his resignation.
Says 9/10 of the people wish him to retain it and are opposed to M L Knight who is also an applicant for the place.

Turpin & Knight are incompetent to fill the office correctly.

As the case now stands, the sentence passed by the court cannot legally be carried into execution by the Department Commander, for the reason that a portion of the findings of guilty by the Court and which must reasonably be supposed to have had their influence upon the minds of the Court, in making up the sentence passed, have been disapproved by the officer ordering the Court, while the sentence is approved.

It is by no means certain that the sentence as passed is, as it would have been, had the accused been found not guilty, of the 3rd Specification of 3rd charge and 6th charge and its specifications. Hence the impropriety of disapproving the findings and at the same time approving of the Sentence passed as the deliberate judgment of the Court upon those findings.

Aside from this, a careful examination of the proceedings seems to one clearly to indicate more of desire on the part of the Lieutenants who appear as prosecuting witnesses to advance their own interests that those of the Government by the removal of the accused, who appears to have managed his Company affairs, with as much or more ability, and as great regard, for the interests of the service, as the vast majority of officers in the army.

While hardly a specification in all the long list of charges, has, to my mind, been clearly proved, the evidence nevertheless shows the accused to have been guilty of some irregularities that probably deserve censure, but nothing that would warrant the carrying into execution of the sentence passed.

The accumulation of charges is probably one of the worst features in the case. This is, and always has been considered detrimental to the interests of the public service and good of the army.

I have therefore to recommend that the proceedings be disapproved and the accused restored to his command, believing as I do the present trial, will be a sufficient warning to the accused to avoid even the appearance of wrong doing, and the disapproval of these proceedings, restore to the Army an Officer who

In doing so I cant help remembering what I said in reply to your letter written after your first defeat by Harris for Congress, your desire to quit Politics and the law and engage in business was the feeling expressed by you at the time. You will remember I told you in reply, that from habit education and talent your services would be required in other ways - (How would you like to engage in some trading opperation?)

You have found it so and while I have been so situated as not to be able to render much personal service in your advancement
nevertheless I have felt and noticed its progress with the same interest as though I had been a personal participant in the fights.

Accept my best wishes and prayers that

your life may long be spared to enjoy the honors so worthily bestowed upon your head by the good People of Illinois

Happy New Year to All

Truly Your friend

Absence from home and the dangerous illness of Mrs S. prevented my receiving yours of the 27th ult in time for me to assist you personally at Springfield, but as the matter has terminated as we desired it is just as well. Prior to that time, I wrote to each of our prominent men asking them to instruct our Representative to cast his vote in your favor. Also to each Editor, desiring them to publish an article in your favor, and in every instance, my desire was complied with, yet notwithstanding all this Mr Ford acted in direct disregard of the wishes of his constituents and betrayed us, happily without avail. I should have accompanied Miss Crawford. Wait and Harrington to Springfield, if the health of my wife had permitted, but I dared not leave her. Allow me to congratulate you warmly upon you success and may the high honors which you have acquired in the past be increased in your new position and your course be such as to put to shame and forever silence every one of your late opposers.

With Kind regards and Wishing you the highest success

I had myself thought of soliciting an appointment as a bearer of dispatches to Europe intending, if I succeeded, to give my attention on my return to the editing of a Newspaper in this City - but of course sir, I ask only for such a position either at home or abroad as you may deem suitable to my Capacity - if indeed you should think I have any claim at all to your consideration - how
