My partner in business Mr Jonathan Hancock who will hand you this, goes to Springfield to see you in relation to an application he desires to make for a situation as Quartermaster of a Brigade, with the rank of Major.

You will probably remember me, as among the unfortunate applicants for office under our friend Mr Lincoln. I thank you sincerely for your kind recommendation and I only regret that Mr Lincoln did not appreciate the services I was vain enough to imagine I had rendered the party - but so be it. Disappointment has only made me a more faithful

and enthusiastic supporter of our Cause under the firm conviction that merit will find its reward sooner or later.

I profess to have some little claim on your confidence from the fact that I was one of a few here who advocated your nomination at Decatur in spite of the influence of a certain paper and its friends in favor of Judd.

Now I have been an active politician for many years and it is the first time in my life I have desired any other position in the ranks than that of 'high private'. Judge then my disappointment when I discovered that Mr Lincoln refused to honor my application to be appointed Agent for the Sioux Indians. I have come to the conclusion that politics are mighty uncertain - but to the subject of my letter.

Mr Hancock has always

been a hard working Republican and is eminently worthy of your confidence.

Any service you can render him in the matter of his application will be very gratefully remembered by your friends here.

He will accept this or any other office that would remunerate him for his services.

I have assured him that in my opinion, with the recommendation of Judge Kellogg which he will show you, he will have no difficulty in secure your influence and cordial cooperation in relation to his position whatever it may be. I hope his visit to Springfield will not prove a failure.

Dear Sir

The bearer, Mr. Edwin C. Lawson visits Springfield with a view to business first, if not in that successful then to join some one of the volunteer companies at Camp Butler. The object of this is to ask that if in your multifarious affairs, it is not burdensome Should he in business arrangements (a clerkship I think he seeks first) refer to you, you will say a good word-- With the young gentleman, I have but a very limited acquaintance – his Father is however one of my oldest and most steadfast friends – a man who I have found through an intimate and extended acquaintance, always right on all questions and ready when he is needed__ knowing him thus, I feel no hesitation in saying that his Son may be recommended as a reliable man – The Father is Z.B. Lawson Esqr. of Chesterfield in this County, and in your travels through Macoupin, I think you must have met him ___ I fear that I trouble you, but know that you will feel that I do call upon you, only when it would wrong in one to decline –

Very respy yr obt

A. McKim Dubois

                    <text>
Chester. Ill. Sept. 6. 1861.

Dear Governor:

I have had an interview with Mr. Morrison, and he frankly stated, a very considerable proportion of the men he could raise for the proposed regiment would not be willing to enlist with the prospect of having Judge Niles at the head of it; that he himself had some pride for the first place, and did not think Judge Niles would consent to take the second, nor would he (Morrison) feel comfortable as Colonel with the Judge in a subbordinate position; that he liked Niles as a man and believed he would make a brave and efficient officer, &c. &c. I therefore considered it impolitic to attempt any further negotiation with a view of bringing Niles and Morrison to work together. Neither Morrison or Niles can object to my course, and I am very sure the Judge will not have any just cause to complain of your Excellency for the position you have assumed in the premises.

Morrison seems to be very favorable to my holding a commission in his regiment and expressed his entire confidence in my ability, and in the certainty of our agreement.

He also assures me the democrats of his region, and acquaintance, would be well satisfied with me as an officer.

I found Morrison fully alive to a sense of the important duty he has assumed, and I believe he is posse'd of sufficient military knowledge and a will to enable him to acquit himself with credit and contribute much assistance to the Government.

The prospect is very flattering for an early completion of the regiment.

Morrison expressed much good feeling for your Excellency (spoke of the kind manner in which you treated him) and said he did not doubt of being able to agree with you in regard to the other appointments for the regiment. He wished me to say to you, however, he will be greatly obliged to you if you will not come to any definite conclusion in regard to the other officers to be assigned to it until he can have another interview with you in regard to the matter; and he hopes to see your Excellency the first part of next week. His suggestions will then be respectfully submitted. In the meantime we shall both be engaged in pushing on the work in hand.

                    <text>
Cheney House

Sep 7. 1861

Dear Governor: I met Judge Wilson at the cars and intended to have gone home with him, but at his urgent request to stay and see what conclusion you came to in reference to his Regiment, as well as from what you said to me this morning, I changed my mind and am here and expect to remain here at my room until I leave Springfield this evening until better days shall dawn upon us. The reason for this I will state.

In a few moments after the cars left I noticed in the St Louis morning papers that the fight at Shelbina Mo day before yesterday was a shameful failure and that Gen Hurlbut, who was drunk and who was put under arrest by Col Williams, was the cause of it.

I am overwhelmed with grief and mortification. I feel personally disgraced and have no heart to write or speak about it. All I ask is to be allowed quietly to go home in the hope that no man from my county will ever be mentioned to you again in connection with any office of trust or responsibility. This burning disgrace is indeed intolerable. Great God to what awful end are we hastening! The quietude of the grave would be a relief to me could I know that that would be the end of these awful disasters.

As things now stand I do not feel it my duty to accept the appointment which you have tendered me. And yet I feel painfully embarrassed that my name has ever been mentioned in connection with it. As it is known that you had contemplated making the appointment

all I have to request is that you will in some way give me the opportunity to show that I have not applied for the appointment. I may be too sensitive about this matter but a fear that there may be a reflection upon me on account of the disgrace of Hurlbut makes me ask that personal justice may be done me.

I have another request to make and that is though men and devils should object, do not abandon your humane policy of sending to camp and field some one to look after the neglected and suffering soldiers. Ten thousand hearts leaped with joy when it was announced that relief was to be sent to the neglected. Do not, in Gods name I beg of you do not turn that joy to sorrow by failing in this matter to do your duty promptly.

A. C. Fuller

as to Hurlbut &c.

And remember that for every article of comfort - for every moment of considerate attention - for every token of love and affection which you shall send to absent ones, the blessings of the relieved, their fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers & friends shall, like the rains of heaven, be showered upon your head

Judge Wilson informs me that General Freemont most cordially endorses the policy and will most cheerfully co-operate with you, and that he Nelson telegraphed to you yesterday to this effect.

Give my kind regards to Mrs Y. and believe me still, whether in prosperity or adversity - in joy or sorrow

Your sincere Friend

Allen C Fuller

PS I will take any message to Judge Wilson you may wish to send. -
