</p><p>The bearer, Mr. Edwin C. Lawson visits Springfield with a view to business first, if not in that successful then to join some one of the volunteer companies at Camp Butler. The object of this is to ask that if in your multifarious affairs, it is not burdensome Should he in business arrangements (a clerkship I think he seeks first) refer to you, you will say a good word-- With the young gentleman, I have but a very limited acquaintance – his Father is however one of my oldest and most steadfast friends – a man who I have found through an intimate and extended acquaintance, always right on all questions and ready when he is needed__ knowing him thus, I feel no hesitation in saying that his Son may be recommended as a reliable man – The Father is Z.B. Lawson Esqr. of Chesterfield in this County, and in your travels through Macoupin, I think you must have met him ___ I fear that I trouble you, but know that you will feel that I do call upon you, only when it would wrong in one to decline –

</p><p>Dear Governor: I met Judge Wilson at the cars and intended to have gone home with him, but at his urgent request to stay and see what conclusion you came to in reference to his Regiment, as well as from what you said to me this morning, I changed my mind and am here and expect to remain here at my room until I leave Springfield this evening until better days shall dawn upon us. The reason for this I will state.
</p><p>In a few moments after the cars left I noticed in the St Louis morning papers that the fight at Shelbina Mo day before yesterday was a shameful failure and that Gen Hurlbut, who was drunk and who was put under arrest by Col Williams, was the cause of it.

<p>I am overwhelmed with grief and mortification. I feel personally disgraced and have no heart to write or speak about it. All I ask is to be allowed quietly to go home in the hope that no man from my county will ever be mentioned to you again in connection with any office of trust or responsibility. This burning disgrace is indeed intolerable. Great God to what awful end are we hastening! The quietude of the grave would be a relief to me could I know that that would be the end of these awful disasters.
</p><p>As things now stand I do not feel it my duty to accept the appointment which you have tendered me. And yet I feel painfully embarrassed that my name has ever been mentioned in connection with it. As it is known that you had contemplated making the appointment

<p>all I have to request is that you will in some way give me the opportunity to show that I have not applied for the appointment. I may be too sensitive about this matter but a fear that there may be a reflection upon me on account of the disgrace of Hurlbut makes me ask that personal justice may be done me.
</p><p>I have another request to make and that is though men and devils should object, do not abandon your humane policy of sending to camp and field some one to look after the neglected and suffering soldiers. Ten thousand hearts leaped with joy when it was announced that relief was to be sent to the neglected. Do not, in Gods name I beg of you do not turn that joy to sorrow by failing in this matter to do your duty promptly.

</p><p>Mr. S. P. Read is our Candidate for the Convention. He is right on all the questions especially on the Distsricting that we Secured. Now you see that I have declined to Save the County - & make a Shure thing of it -
</p><p>Now Sir - I do most ardently desire some little patronage from you. I recd your letter a few weeks Since, Saying that you had placed my name on your list of applicants. Now Govr - I hope you will not forget me, we have fought shoulder to shoulder for 15 years, & you can now help me in this my time of need

Volunteers, - a Station being offered fitting my experience in military matters - compared with other appointments -- I make the following extract from Capt Cullums Register of Officers and Graduates of the U. S. M. Academy - Edn of 1850 - viz "George W. Long Promoted Bat 2nd Lieut, 1st Artillery July 1st 1824 - 2nd Lieut 4th Artillery July 1st 1824 - Instructor of Mathematics Artillery School of Practice Fort Monroe Va 1825-26 - Acting Asst Professor of Natural Experimental Philosophy Military Academy from Aug 1st 1828 to Feby 1st 1829 - First Lieut Feby 2nd 1832 - Resigned Dec 31st 1835 - Chief Engineer of Louisiana from 1835 to 1838 -
</p><p>Including four years cadetship, you can perceive that my connection with the Army was Sixteen and a half years - during which I served in the arms of Artillery, Infantry, Ordinance, Commissary, Quartermaster, Topographical & Military Engineers - the latter embracing near six years of the last of my Military life -- Since residing in this State now exceeding twenty-five years I have at sundry times been engaged in civil engineering the last of which was on the U.S. [illegible] of the [Ill. </p><p>I understand that Gov. Hoffman offers to make up another German Regiment. The experience in St. Louis, where Fremont has authorized the making up of several Regiments at the same time has shown the great impropriety of such as course. He has now some ten fragments of Regiments, and not one full yet. He has now issued an order to consolidate them thereby disappointing a great many men, and in fact imposing on some, who enlisted under particular men as officers, who are now thrown out. I would suggest not to commission Gov. Hoffman to raise men, until my Regiment is full. I will get this week two fine Companies from Sigels former Regiment (Illinoisans) who have fought at Carthage & Springfield, but who prefer now to enroll in Illinois. I expect to have at the end of the week some 6 Companies in Camp. I have offers of parts of Companies from various parts of the State but it takes time to consolidate them and fix them up. Direct the Adjutant General to send me a certain number of Passes, the names of Captais to be left blank. I have an immense trouble with the Railroad unless I have such passes. There is no telegraph office open
