Mr Heninger is a Very industrious worthy farmer his only offence consists in his being a Staunch Union Man for this reason alone he is now driven from his home and family and dare not return whilst Such men as follow Clingmans lead are dispoiling him of his property, The fruits of long years of toil and privation

Please use your Influince with his Excellency in my behalf I feel that I have rendered Service Sufficient to warrant my boldness in asking for Such a position, I presume that the Gov is Satisfied of my ability to command a Regiment and I am not uneasy but I can get the Vote of the Officers of almost any regiment that may be brought to gather from the Centrail portion of Illinois

All quiet in Shelby County. Clingmans gang

are robing and Commiting depredations in Fayette a neighbor of mine Mr Hosea Funk took dinner yesterday at Mr John Heningers Six miles South West of Vandalia, during his Stay of a few hours this band of robers came to the house got water and after making enquiries for Mr Heninger who was absent proceeded to the Barn and haltered and drove of Seven heads of farm horses Mrs Heninger recognized one of the number as a Tenant who had lived on the farm for three years

Mr Heninger is a Very industrious worthy farmer his only offence consists in his being a Staunch Union Man for this reason alone he is now driven from his home and family and dare not return whilst Such men as follow Clingmans lead are dispoiling him of his property, The fruits of long years of toil and privation

If I had a company of Cavalry I could clean that entire country of thoes desperadoes and the Lord knows that I would like it exceedingly well to do it. I was born and raised in that County and used to be acquainted with Very many of the Cow paths

The Status of the inhabitants I quite well understand. Write me Soon Your Truly

days ago in reference to raising the regiment

for State service spoken of in your order

to Provost Marshalls but having seen Hon

I supposed necessary relative to the Matter

considered it unnecessary. But there seems to be

a misapprehension in some way Mr. Dubois told

me that he was under the impression that the

organization of the regiment was in the hands of

Genl Rosencranze to whom I have written but

received no reply. I now drop you this line for

the purpose of ascertaining if the regiment has

been raised. I have seen no notice of it.

If it has not been raised I desire to know

whether you still have the right or desire to

to accept a regiment for the service as stated

in the order. If so I would be glad to

have the privilege of raising the same my

my experience in the military field I think

justifies me in aspiring to the position and

am satisfied that more than one regiment

will be required in the State before the Close

of the present campaign and I fear

Sir

I had intended writing you some days ago in reference to raising the regiment for State service spoken of in your order to Provost Marshalls but having seen Hon J K Dubois and obtained all the information as I supposed necessary relative to the Matter considered it unnecessary. But there seems to be a misapprehension in some way Mr. Dubois told me that he was under the impression that the organization of the regiment was in the hands of Genl Rosencranze to whom I have written but received no reply. I now drop you this line for the purpose of ascertaining if the regiment has been raised. I have seen no notice of it. If it has not been raised I desire to know whether you still have the right or desire to to accept a regiment for the service as stated in the order. If so I would be glad to have the privilege of raising the same my my experience in the military field I think

justifies me in aspiring to the position and am satisfied that more than one regiment will be required in the State before the Close of the present campaign and I fear in this 11th District.

         Dear Sir,

I desire to call your attention to the fact that in the preliminaries for a draft there is no arrangements for a division of this city and precinct to be drawn by wards - I learn that Capt westlake says it is now to late to do this - - If the division is not made the draft will bear unjustly on the wards that have already furnished a large proportion of the men already enlisted and besides it will work injuriously

to our political interests one ward in our city containing the largest number of voters has a large Copperhead majority - and has (as you may infer) furnished but few men. These Copperheads remain at home and ought to be compelled to bear at least some portion of the burdens of the war. This cannot be without the draft (illegible) is made by wards.

A Petition will go up to Col Oakes. this morning to have this matter so Ordered will you please see to it that the right of Loyal citizens may be protected and that justice in part may be meeted out to some of these copperheads.
