Hon Gov Yates, Springfield Ills, Sir,
You will receive an account of the raids on our orchards by the Secesh. Their plan seems to be to clean out union men by cutting down their orchards. If not checked they will succeed. Fruit growers are union men. You cannot imagine their consternation.
We have thought best to suggest to you that you cause a skillful detective to be sent hither to work up a case or so The one of Mr Babcock's is easiest to get at. Mr. Babcock's whole property except the land consisted in his trees He spent immense labor on them-he had the finest trees in the state.
One representing himself a deserter will be the man I think he will smoke the thing out in a short time. This is of the utmost importance to the whole of southern Illinois. If you can't do anything let us know to whom we can apply with success. Something must be done or we are gone. Communicate with me, or Babcock-or with Chas Colby, or Messers Evans South Pass

The destruction of young orchards belonging in every instance to union men seems now to be the most popular mode of punishment.

The outrages are mostly perpetrated by Deserters from the 109th (Nimmo's) Regt Ill Vols: There are some 40 of them in the Eastern part of this county: The property of loyal men is absolutely unsafe while they remain here. What are we to do?

Must we tamely submit to have our orchards or other property the result of years of toil destroyed by these vile miscreants in human form some of them but little above the brutes in intelligence and quite as devoid of moral principle. Or must we protect ourselves by retaliating

and thus bring about such a state of affairs as have been enacted in Missouri.

The following is a statement of some of the outrages which have been committed upon the property of union men and these are recent.

Evans & Bro at Cobden had 1700 fine peach trees destroyed or nearly so about three weeks ago. ---

A. Babcock near Anna 400 very fine apple, peach and pear trees just beginning to bear fruit -- loss heavy -- poor man

G. H. Baker at Cobden several hundred fruit trees destroyed by firing dry grass in orchard loss heavy. ---

Mr. Wisener near Anna two valuable horses poisoned some two weeks since.

Others have been damaged but the above is enough to show that a mania exists for destroying the property of union men. --

Dear Governor

I have read with unalloyed pleasure and satisfaction your recent patriotic and eloquent message to the Legislature of Illinois. Oh that its spirit and sentiment animated the body to whom it is so earnestly and emphatically addressed Were our whole people in the loyal states imbued with the principles so clearly enunciated by you and which must in the end be universally adopted as the basis of successful subjugation of the slave holders rebellion now upon us. The work would soon be done. I was pained upon reading a day or two since the proceedings of what purported to be a Democratic meeting of members I believe of your Legislature. The utterances upon that occasion were poorly calculated to animate the brave troops from your state who have gone forth with their lives in their hands to maintain our national existence

it makes me sad to witness as I have done latterly the growing spirit of discontent in the north of all that one government is doing to save us from destruction, why cannot we at the North of all parties lay aside every shade and stripe of previous political distinction and unite as one man in the solemn earnest purpose of using every available instrumentality in putting down the treason which is at work in the overthrow of all that is dear to us as a nation, why do men thus forget their duty to their country. and minister in words if not in deeds to the disloyal element that is threatening our ruin - I must confess at times, my heart almost sinks within me. When I see these [givings?] out at the north, of discord & entire want of unity in the work that has been put upon us by wicked traitors in our midst. We must not however give way to despair - we must work on and toil on in preserving the heritage which our fathers have left us.

and I hope your glowing words will find their way to the gallant men of Illinois and of all other loyal states now in the field. it will be a comfort to their weary lot to know that their Governor thinks rightly & speaks rightly and has acted rightly, nobly & manfully for the state he honors & the country he loves ever since the rebellion broke out - I commenced for the purpose of thanking you for your noble message: your state will thank you: the loyal army in the field will thank you for it - and when we have finally recovered as we surely shall do, one broken nationality, history will inscribe upon its [undying?] pages as among the truest of men to duty & to country in the hour of its greatest peril the name of "Richard Yates" God bless you & believe me as ever

and I hope your glowing words will find their way to the gallant men of Illinois and of all other loyal states now in the field. it will be a comfort to their weary lot to know that their Governor thinks rightly & speaks rightly and has acted rightly, nobly & manfully for the state he honors & the country he loves ever since the rebellion broke out - I commenced for the purpose of thanking you for your noble message: your state will thank you: the loyal army in the field will thank you for it - and when we have finally recovered as we surely shall do, one broken nationality, history will inscribe upon its [undying?] pages as among the truest of men to duty & to country in the hour of its greatest peril the name of "Richard Yates" God bless you & believe me as ever

Respected Sir

I am no alarmist but since the leading tories of this State have held their treasonable meetings at Springfield the secessionists in these parts have become bold & more [impertinent?] than ever and dark hints are thrown out as to what they will do. In my opinion all that there wicked bad men want is the [toscin?] summer by their leaders, and an indiscriminate slaughter would take place of all the leading Union men throughout Southern Illinois. I have talked with many Union men in this vicinity - and they all take the same

view of matters as I do & honestly think there is mischief brewing. Would it not be well enough to take things in time there is no better point than this [place?] a [illegible[] at [illegible] for a Regt or so to be stationed. The RR as would be the first thing the secessionists would be likely to attack & tear up. Another thing we have no army in this county. Not enough can be [illegible] for even a company. Could not a small [det?] be shipped down in a quiet manner to our P.M. W Edwards Esq he is a true man & would act with discretion. I may be mistaken in all this thing but I see too many signs to be far wrong. If we have

to fight here in Ills in defence of our homes our wives and our children we want to be ready and by the help of God we will endeavor to make short work of it. The wicked & abominable speeches of O. Melverry of this co - has done a great deal of mischief. Can nothing be done with such men who get up before a large assemblage & defy the government & call for dissolving our connexion with the New England States? God help us, and help the nation, and may God give you strength to maintain your ground and enable you to put a quietus upon the treason men hatching in this

For God Sake What are we coming to? It seems to me that unless God in his kind providence interposes in our behalf soon our Country is lost. The people are right, or generally so, but are fast loosing confidence in the management of the Administration and to some extent becoming desparate. Our people admire a man of boldness and Pluck And it seems to me are fast approaching that condition when if such a man should strike [and?] might inaugurate a fearfull revolution at home that would require all the resources of the government to subdue.

I fear that serious demoralization is in some portions of our army and I think certainly the trash is equal to the Consumptive and there the fearfull extravagance & plunder. Oh for a man at the head of the War Department of brains, honesty, & pluck to

inaugurate a reform and restore the sinking spirits of our people and discipline in our Army.

I see that perfect harmony does not prevail at Springfield. But Governor you are in a position to make the issue boldly with the radical opposition and all conservatives will be with you.

I beg pardon for trespassing upon your time with the above suggestions but as I sat down to drop you a line they were in my mind.

I have just this moment cut the enclosed slip out of this mornings Times and as it in effect what as you know -- I have suggested for Illinois or the North that I send it.

This will be found indispensible for the efficiency of the Army and Stop Some of the plundering.

After the Adjutant General relieved me from duty at Chicago I advised him that I should visit New York for a few days and I expecting to have heard from him here, but I may not remain here now long enough to receive my Communication unless by telegraph.
