Dear Sir,

Your note of the 22d inst come to home in due time but owing to a pressure of business I have been obliged to defer an answer.

In reply I have to state that the papers of James E. Richardson for discharge have been partly made up and are awaiting the action of Department Head Quarters. He would have been discharged before but he was not in a condition to travel and under treatment. His papers will be [completed?] in the course of a week

For the favor of the pamphlet containing the account of your home reception I am much obliged. I can endorse all that was said in your favor and [illegible] my [illegible] admiration of the

brilliant administration of yourself of the affairs of one of the largest states in this glorious republic during a time that [took?] the utmost energies of the best men of the nation; as well as my profound gratitude for your personal favors in the first year of the war, and since. As an Illinoisan I too feel inspired with a feeling of pride in the record our state has made for itself during this memorable struggle for liberty and equality of all men and to your own good sense and executive ability we are all indebted for such results. In the conferring of additional honors and [illegible] of your further services on her behalf the state has not shown a proper appreciation of her own interests, and of what was due on return, from her to one of her eminent sons for faithful labor done

I have the honor to be
very respectfully
Your obedient servant

Miss S. J. Vance of Pecotonica in this County whose letter you enclosed to me is a girl of ability and worthy.

She intended to have you here 4 [illegible] but were too late. Being engaged in Rockford I could not have the pleasure of hearing you at Elgin. Our people are much alarmed at the re-construction operations in the South. Rebels are getting power. We expect that our Senators

will advise with Pres. Johnson in whose patriotism and ability we have full confidence and prevent if possible any injury to this Republic.

If we permit the rebels and Copperheads to do [illegible] artifice and intrigue in civil matters what they could not by arms - now after we have subjugated them - "We aint smart" No No! Congress must hold the powers firm in the hands of the government till all things are made right in the South. [illegible] secure by a constitutional amendment - universal suffrage. This must succeed universal emancipation. So far the rebels and friends have succeeded in elections [illegible]. But I hasten, do your duty you know the danger of this crisis.

Yours as ever

Anson S. Miller

Dear Friend

News as to friend Dougherty has just come to hand. He is absent in Western N.Y. for his health. You know he sold out to Hyatt & others. Had his health been good he would not have done it. I hope to see D. on [illegible] him soon and will then write you again.

Miss S.

My Dear Govenor,
I suspect that upon your suggestion, Mr. Lincoln sent my name to the department of Internal Revenue for the appointment of Assessor for this district as all [illegible] some kind friend of mine must have done so, for the Commissioner wrote Mr. Cook that my name had been sent there by Mr. Lincoln and it must be noticed, how an effort is being made to defeat me. Will you be so kind as to write to the department and suggest my claim, if I have any, and insist on Mr. Lincoln's appointment being carried out. I have no doubt that a letter from you will settle the matter. You might suggest that I was one of the Electors in the last election, [illegible] ---- By giving this matter your early attention you will very much oblige me. I do not know who suggested my name to Mr. Lincoln unless it was yourself.
There is another matter in which I desire your aid. My friend Mr. Alexander Miller, and, by the way, a warm a and influential of yours, got into some trouble in relation to the circulation of some postal currency, drawn into it by the [illegible] without really having been guilty of any wrong. He was arrested and confined in old Capitol Prison. I went to Washington and procured his release. The Detectives got after him again and had him arrested upon the same old charge. Mr. Miller is not in prison now, he is on bail on these charges. Now I will say first that I have known Mr. Miller intimately during the last ten years. And I unhesitatingly say that a more honorable upright man did not live in this community. He is a man of wealth and influence, is true blue Union to the core. Always ready to put his hand to the bottom of his pocket for the good cause, was my best [illegible] in the election last fall and on the election of Gov. Yates to the U. S. Senate last winter, sent the dispatch, "[illegible] County to her Representative, Greeting, well done good and faithful servant, all hail! Dick Yates". He is [English?] and an honest man. Now Govenor I simply want a strong letter from you to Secty Stanton Andy [illegible] or any other man of influence [illegible] suggesting the justice of advising Mr. Bass to enter a [illegible] in his case. Bass will do so on receiving such a suggestion from Washington. I am going there so a letter from you will very much aid me. I must succeed, for I cannot see so noble a man as Aleck Miller sacrificed by a set of cursed detectives. Please write as early as possible and oblige Your true friend W. T Hopkins

                    <text>
Aurora July 25, 1865
Hon. Rich. Yates
Sir:
Sec. 14, of the new Post Office Law, reads thus: - "that the (illegible) advertisement for the proposals to carry the mails of the United States shall be published hereafter for a period of six weeks, in one or more, but not to exceed five Newspapers, printed in the State or Territory where the mail service is to be performed, one of which shall be printed at the seat of government of Such State or Territory."
This advertisement will be worth about six or eight-Hundred dollars, and I think the Postmaster General has the disposal of the advertisement and assignment of newspapers in which it appears. Of course not less than five papers will be used for Illinois. Springfield Journal will be one of course, leaving four papers in other portions of the State. The "Aurora Beacon" is published at Aurora, Illinois.
How did you like the appearance and general make-up of the thousand or more of men and women, boys and girls, in attendance upon our Fourth of July Ball, in our new $80,000 Town Hall! Seriously, we should have been glad to have seen you on that occasion, but it was a little too much for us to expect you to ride twenty-four miles after the fatigues of such a very hot day, and were not much disappointed in your not coming. We had a splendid time here and "[Dead Souls?]" of people. Could not see you at Elgin for I got mixed up in our own celebration, contrary to my desires, and could not get away. Was in Chicago the next day, and designed to have seen you - did call, but you were out - and afterwards got mixed up with some pretty women and went with them to a little banquet - up at Evanston - therefore I did not see you.
I send you [Seward's?] oration. Our Committee printed 3,000 for circulation

among the people. What has become of yours? Would like to print it in my paper if there is no objection on your part; or at least a portion. I hope that you fetched that
Elgin community on you "side to stay and for keeps." for heretofore they have not been on your side much. The Elgin Chronicle pitched into you a little, though that was to have been expected, in view of its Copperhead propensities. It was well for you to go to Elgin on the (illegible) and I am glad you did.
Respectfully yours
Geo. S. Bangs

                <text>

Geo. S. Bangs

Dear Sir

Your favour of the 18th Inst. with the discharge papers of A. J. DeHass inclosed, also a few lines from Edwd M. Stanton informing you of the fact, are all duly receaved.

I am happy to be able to inform you that Mr. DeHass is out of the survace, he left here two weeks ago to day for his home in Prairie City, expect him back here again next week, to make Jacksonville his home, here after.

He feeles under a thousand obligations to you , for geting him discharged, and I hope the day is not far distent when him, and your humble writer, will have the pleasure of favouring you with our votes, and influence, for the highest office in the gift of the American People,

as we surely shall do should that opportunity ever occur. If a "mud sill" is alowed to speak his sentiments, let me add that I indorse every word of your Elgin 4th of July oration, I am the strongest kind of Nigraw Sufrage man.

I will probably be his factotum. He is in favor of amending the constitution, giving all who can read and write, white or black a right to vote. If I remain, which is all but certain, I can do you good here. Dana agrees with all my news and says that my letters greatly interested him. He says if I will write editorials, like my letters it is all he wants.

I thought it would do me good if you were to write him a letter, setting me up, as you know him, and letting him know much good I did the [cause?] and the party during the last five years.
