<text>
Phila August 2 1865
Hon Richard Yates
Dear Sir

Your letter of July 22nd is rec'd and is not [late?] for my purpose. I arrived in the city too late to secure a suitable house or to accomplish anything of importance for the fall session- I hope to be all settled by the February term. I cannot sufficiently thank you for your correspondence to my request for the use of your honored name; I think I appreciate the full value of your generous offer-Twas almost a assumption for a stranger to make such a request of you, 'twas noble and generous of you to grant it. When I sent my letter to you I felt that you would be justified in refusing but for some reason which I cannot explain I believed you would gratify me. I think to expect this kindness was to be in keeping with my [conception?] ---- of the character of our noble Ex Governor; a conception formed from the record of his public life and services, a record everywhere marked by words and deeds of benevolent kindness, and which has endeared him to the hearts of Illinoisans no less than his scholarly statesmanship. His kind letter did not disappoint me, and I felt a thrill of gratification that I has not miscalculated the strength of the feeling which you have always shown for Ills officers & men, their misses and children. The words of justice which you give for any precious Husband, I have read over and over again. They shall be [illegible] into the treasury, the portion of my heart which I reserve for all such tribute to the dear dead hero whose love & memory are enshrined there,-For the great blackness which the war has cast about me, there is little else that has given cheering and comforting light as words of praise for my husband. In my earliest knowledge of him I beheld what is in him, which when grown and strengthened makes men honored & great. ---- In our married life of nearly eight most happy years, which his great generous heart to me all [unveiled?], so full of earnest life purpose, so eager on the fulfilment of his life's watchword "onward", so fearless and brave-so like a gentle woman in his kindness I have felt, for the world to know him as I know him, would make him what he truly was, " A man among men". And was the sweet incense of praise which come circling around his name from the lips of gifted and honored friends, meets from my heart a warm, quick response, for I know him well hero worthily it is bestowed and then goes out from my heart a blessing upon those who recognize the virtues of him whose name I am so [illegible] to hear, Your candid endorsement of my husband and your disinterested efforts for him were always a matter of pride and gratification to my Husband, and not less so to his wife.

It will certainly be agreeable and a sincere pleasure to me to see Gov Yates ----when he visits Phila if he can find time from his numerous friends here. I will be in at 281 North 12th st until I become established in my Seminary. When that occurs I may trouble you with my circulars. If I have trespassed too long upon your valuable time, I may please plead "not guilty"Your [illegible] kindness having called forth this lengthy intercession.

With sincere respect and warm appreciation of your kindness
Your very [ineligible]
Mrs Edw d W Kirk

                <text>

Dear Friend
I wrote you a few days since in regard to our friend. There has been quite a change in him. He begins to talk of business and seems inclined to assist in business matters. He has been so occupied in regard to Custom House, Politics and Women that I thought he was loosing sight of a good many legitimate business transac-tions in which he could have assisted his friends. He seems to appreciate that fact.

My eye being more to business than Politics, and his to Politics I have noticed the opportunities for opperating when he had not untill it was too late. The fact is not being brought up to business. He does not see the openings or appreciate the advantages his positions gives him for operating in a legitimate way through a friend in out-side matters. The Custom House is running all O. K. The Collector is making himself very popular with the citizens. All that have transacted business with the Custom House seem well pleased and speak highly of his Collector. He seems to gain the confidence of the Creoles especially among the Ladies. If his modesty does not [illegible] him. I think he will become quite a [illegible] among them. Would not [illegible] until fall. My regards to family. Yours truly Wm. Babcock

He has had every attention necessary to comfort and cure had the latter been poss ----ible but there is no hope, he must die I am Governor very respectfully and truly yours F Swarrick ---- F Swarrick Nashville Ten acknowledges receipt of letter of recommendation - Col Wood very sick-dying-

Col Servant has just forwarded me your second letter of recommendation for which as well as the first please accept my sincere thanks I owe you an apology for neglecting to acknowledge the receipt of your first kind letter but the truth is that we were on the move for several weeks either from one post to another or from one barracks to another after which Col Wood was placed in command of the post which put me in command of the regiment and about the same time we made another change of quarters and Col Wood was suddenly taken very ill and is now in a dying condition there is no hope of his recovery and to appearances he will not live over tomorrow night his disease was what is here called "break bone" fever and has run into typhoid.

Dear Sir.
A Mr Alexander
Miller is under arrest for the cir-
culation of some postal currency.
I am not acquainted with the
facts, but from the very
high character of Mr Miller
I am sure there must be some-
thing wrong in the arrest. He
is a man of wealth and influence
- a most active and liberal
supporter of our Union Cause.
Unless there is proof of his guilt
I sincerely hope that you
will order Mr Bass, The

enter a Noll Pros in his
case -
Very Respectfully

Chief Quartermaster's Office
Little Rock, Ark., Aug 7th 1865
Hon Rich Yates
My Dear Sir
The enclosed was sent to me at this place - The promptness with you attended to my request in pen what I knew you would do. When I draw on you I always expect my draft to be known I wish I could say so of all those who profess friendship for me I feel much obliged to you for the interest you took in this matter & all others where I have been interested. My nephew Col HY.T. Noble Chief Q.M. of the Dept of Ark wishes me to thank you most kindly for the interest you have taken in his behalf. He is a very active young man & will be back to our state where he will of course have some influence in the future

he is and ever will be your fine friend. This is the last season I shall spend here in this state. I shall be home & able I hope if you can need it to do you some good. My Dear friend do you know that I look forward with much hope to the time when you will take your seat in the Senate of the U.S. I want you to put forth the whole force of your intellect. They can arrange with Judge Bell to run two off and two on; provided the agents who are resting will always be in telegraphic communication so as to supply deficiencies in case of accidents. I will now give my consent to their resting two at a time on the conditions above mentioned.

Dr Sir
By the crushing out of this rebellion I am now honorably discharged from the [Re,S,?]Service. I came however very near having my life "crushed out" last winter being run over and trodden upon by a horse whose sharp front shoe struck my face tearing off the whole upper [illegible] nose [and?] breaking the nose palate and roof of my mouth so that I can never resume the duties of a pastor although I have preached three times a Sabbath since I was hurt and two of those times to regiments in the open air. Having been injured while in the Service of the Re.S, I am [advised?] by all my friends that I have a claim to the Consideration of the Govt. -- under the joint Resolution of the late Congress to employ such persons in preference to others. It is therefore my desire to go to Washington and make application for Employment either as regular Chaplain (the duties of which office I can still perform) or some other office which may present remunerative prospect as my family is still dependent upon my labor for their subsistence.
As you Sir was kind enough to use your influence in obtaining my appointment as chaplain cannot you still exert that influence in promoting my present design and to doing [illegible] a lasting favor and [illegible]me under great obligations of gratitude one who accscribes himself in [illegible] Sincere Esteem your obt Servant W.F. Hon. R. Yates
Re,S, [illegible] for Ill.
P.S. Though my goods are many of them still [stored?] at Jacksonville Ill, I am staying for the present at this city. I enclose this certificate which[illegible] sign and return and if it would not be too much trouble if you could write also a commendatory note it would probably go much farther than your name affixed to the accompanying document

                    <text>
Tuscola Aug 11th 65

Dear Sir,

Your kind favor enclosing your very admirable and great speech at Elgin on the 4th of July was duly received. Please accept my thanks for the favor. As you suggest I will have some extracts published from it - It was received too late for this week's issue but I will be in the next one.

I had received a letter from Hon H.P.H Bromwell concerning a position under "Uncle Samuel" in his letter he had informed me with references to the assessorship of this Dist.

Last Spring (some time before I came home or had made any application to him) he made an application to have Smith of Champaign appointed in place of [Reeves?]. He wrote me a long letter giving me a history of affairs in the Dist and reitterated his desire and intention to assist me. He feels himself (so he says) under obligation to me and will cheerfully assist me all in his power. He says (which is most probably

true) that I will be doubtful whether he can do anything until Congress meets but that he will before and then and until we succeed. Keeps his eyes open whenever he sees anything that will suit me at home in Washington City or in one of the Territories he will do all in his power to obtain me the appointment.

I have told him I thought you would render your assistance and he says he will heartily co-opperate with you. The is no money to be made out of my [position?] with the Paper and my practice will be my sole reference.

I think I can secure some party influence by editing the "Union" and perhaps will be able to render some service to my friends. My practice will make me a living, but little more.

I think I will [jog?] along until the meeting of Congress and will then move as you advise. I think Governor of I held an influential position I might be able to serve your interests also in the future.

Your Friend

J. E. Callaway

Received your Speech and will dispose of it as you requested - also speaks of getting a position under "Uncle Samuel"

Dear Sir
I have just seen
the report of the committe on the conduct of the war.
The connection of my name with the Sand Creek affair
is all wrong, and the committe could only have been in-
duced to make such statements as they do through the
grossest deception being practiced upon them.
My vindication shall be full, clear and triumphant,
I shall in a few days appeal to the public for suspen-
sion of judgement until I can present the case to
the committe or some equally high authority and ask
that the injuries be repaired. I shall ask nothing but
justice and fair dealing and shall hope for your
aid in securing these and repairing so far as it can
be done the great injustice
