Whether the rebellion is crushed very soon or not, an important Presidential election will soon have to be held. Allow me therefore to respectfully suggest that the next National Convention convened for the nomination of President and Vice President be called as a "Union Convention" and that the nominees be called "Union" candidates.

Among the reasons which prompt me to make this recommendation are-

1st Before the Presidential election the voters of Oregon have to elect a Legislative Assembly, Member of Congress, State Printer and three Judges of the Supreme Court. That Legislature has to elect one U.S. Senator for six years.

2d Our General election is held in June 1864.

Before that time the National Convention will have been held and the result of the same will be known long before our election.

3d The so called democratic party in this State will adopt a Douglas war platform. All secessionists will go with it and the leaders will try to take along with them the Douglas men of the State who hold the balance of power.

4th. If the Presidential Convention is called as Republican and candidates are seen as such, thousands of Douglas democrats in this State and California will go with the secession democracy and endanger the State and electoral tickets.

5th. The candidates in this State will be nominated by a Union Convention and seen as Union men.

Unless these suggestions are heeded, in my opinion there will be great danger of a copperhead triumph on this coast and the election of a U.S.

Chairman of Committee

Dear Sir.

Your favor of the 20th, inviting me to be present at the "Union May Meeting," to be held in De Kalb, on the first of Oct, next is just received. I have accepted an invitation to speak in Dayton O. on that day. I regret that I shall be unable to attend. Were it possible to do so, nothing would give me greater satisfaction than to meet with my friends of De-Kalb, & to add my feeble voice in behalf of that Union which we love so well.

No man, feels the value & necessity of these meetings more than I. The condition of our

State is one of extreme perils. A desperate attempt is being made to break the phallanx of the Union Party by raising false issues, such as that of opposition to the Emancipation Proclamation, opposition to the suspension of Habeas Corpus, & opposition to every stringent measure of the Government; as an act of usurpation; & so to break up the Government itself.

The people of Illinois must oppose these Sophists as they would oppose our more deadly enemy. For if successful they are likely to our most fatal antagonists. People of De Kalb, prove faithful to your high trust as citizens of the United States. Know no cause but that of your country. Let her friends of whatever party be your friends, & her enemies under whatever disguise your enemies.

I have much more which I would like

to add, but could give no better counsel than that. All that I could say would culminate in that.

Let us be of good cheer. Notwithstanding the recent gloomy tidings, I am persuaded that a glorious destiny is in store for our country. It is a sublime proof of the justice of our cause & the heroic ardor of our soldiers, that through defeated disasters that, singly, would destroy almost any power, the collumns of the Union are evermore making their way Gulf Ward.

It remains to us who stay at home, to teach the traitors of Illinois that she can send a hundred thousand men into the field & yet retain enough to crush domestic treason.

Yours Respectfully

Gov Yates

Dear Sir
I am here leaving for Rockford and write you in haste Expecting to go to Washington in a few days on [illegible] for another - I desire a letter from you to President Lincoln in my behalf - You know and so does Mr Lincoln my many years of unselfish labor in Illinois for the Establishment of just principles for which my friends in Winnebago County & other parts of the State think me worthy of recognition by the Administration. Most of my co laborers have said good [things?]. I have had nothing though highly recommended by many leading men. Owing to the sickness of my Daughter I was not able to see the president in person as you advised me to do. I hope to do this now and with a good strong general commendation as I do not now what places are open at home and abroad

I wish also to obtain a place for my son George W at West Point or Annapolis and as there is no vacancy in this Cong Dist Mr [Famwater?] asks the [illegible] for an appointment for my son who has ample testimonials of qualification.

Hoping that you will send me a letter addressed to the president in such terms and manner as shall be effective

I am as ever

Sincerely yours

Amos S Miller
