Dear Governor:-

I suppose it is certain that we have carried both branches of the Legislature & that you can with some certainty calculate who are your friends among those who make the majority. That other candidates for the Senate are making their appearance you probably know, and before the time arrives for the election, there will form combinations against you. Against all opposition you must be prepared. Do not leave a stone unturned, or our honorable expections untried thus will secure success. I fear that you will have opposition from persons that have strongly professed to be friendly and also from some who are under obligation to support you. My chance for observation to any great extent is limited, and therefore shrink from sounding any note of alarm; but are you certain that all of the holdover Senators are for you? I think you told me once they were. Our Mr. Allen is all right; but how is it with Ward? Now, I have no right to create any distrust in your mind of him, and do not desire to; I only want you to be certain and have him fixed up if he is not already. I believe him to be an honorable man and a clever, high minded gentleman and if he is pledged to you he will doubtless fulfill his promise. I was told in Chicago on Thursday last that he was against you, but possibly there was a mistake. Is there any truth in the rumor that Col. Bob Ingarsol's friends contimplate a raid in his favor in that direction? I have been told that there is an idea of this kind afloat; but it does not seem to me to be formidable,

except that it may create confusion. Is there any truth in that other story that Oglesby will be a candidate? You have doubtless heard it often and know the extent of it. There are those who would urge this thing, & if Dick is not proof against the hope, it is possible that a strong combination can be made with him. Those who are opposed to you will try everything & everybody, from Oglesby to Logan, Palmer & Ingarsol. You must be prepared against the possible contingency that some of our folks will not go into the caucus, or be bound by its decision. And right here let me ask how is it with Wash Bushnell of LaSalle. He is a good man and will stand up to his word, but he can be as ugly as the Devil if he takes the notion. Your friends in Woodford & LaSalle doubtless put the ring in his nose before the election, but if you have not and others not, you had better have him seen by some good stout friend.

You must excuse me, Governor, for what may appear to you as "simple minded zeal" in this matter. I want to see you get through. I know that there is likely to be combinations against it; and that many things may be said to accomplish your defeat; Do not "trust to luck" in any one particular where it can be avoided, but take time & circumstances by the fortap and smoke the opposition out of your track. Do not trust too implicitly in the magnanimity and honesty of men. There are a heap of them that have been diping their crust in your molasses dish within the last four years, who are ready to sell out for a better bid. They may not get a chance, & I trust you have got the bars put up in such a way that they will not; but when I hear men who have been professing strong friendship for you, and who have partaken largely of your confidence and used you to advance their interests, magnifying the only argument that can be used by your enemies, it makes me the more anxious that you be on the guard and strive unremittingly for certain success.

Excuse my impudence and believe me

Your Friend

Aurora, Ill., Nov. 13th 1864.

                    <text>
Waukegan Nov 14th/64.

My Dear Governor.

No one can rejoice More than I do, that you have carried the Legislature. & that you will in all human probability be Elected to the Senate. It is needless for me to say that you are preeminently Entitled to the position and that if you do not receive Every Rep vote in both Houses it will be violation of the Known and Expressed wishes of the Entire Masses of our party. As well as a great outrage upon yourself.

I do not expect any difficulty but we can never be too safe.

I would therefore suggest that it would be a good plan for you at once to address a letter personally to each Member

Elect - Who is not already positivly pledged to you. - Stating your candidacy and soliciting his vote. My opinion is that this will elicit a favorable reply in probably Every case. & thus the Matter will be positively settled.

The Writing of these letters cannot possibly result injuriously and may be very beneficial. There can be no impropriety in it as you are Known and recognized as a candidate.

There may be some Members Who are yet undecided Who Would be pleased & honored & Consequently "fixed" by a letter from "Gov Yates."

This may be placing a low Estimate upon the Mentality of Illinois Law Makers, yet my Experience is that slighter Causes frequently Control greater Minds than I think many of them have. I do not fear the result in the Republican Caucus

You will undoubtedly receive the caucus nomination but I fear some game on the part of Copperheads. Our Majority is not large. Suppose that the Copperheads could draw off Six or Seven of our men. in other Words. one more than half of our majority to the support of some Republican for whom they would all vote. The result would be his Election.

You May think this cannot be done. That the democratic Members would not find themselvs to a scheme of this kind. I know that you have deservedly many friends in that party. That you are personally popular with a great many. Yet some of the leaders May take this view.

Gov Yates is the acknowledged

head & leader of the Republican party in the state & the recognized candidate for the Senate.

If We defeat him it is a quasi defeat of the Republican party. Especially as the

Man for Whom the state will be Elected. Although he is not a member of our party.

You will recollect Gov that Senatorial Contests have thus resulted. Chase was first elected to the Senate by the Entire vote of the Whig members. With the vote of free soil democrats. When the united democracy had a large majority.

This case is not quite parallel yet sufficient to show that a political party has cast its Entire Legislative vote for a man who had been in opposition to them all his life. Merely for the purpose of

defeating the regular candidate of their opponents.

My fears may be wild & groundless. I hope they are. & I assure you they arise only from My intense desire that you should be Elected.

I know that nothing in the political future can be certain and I feel that too much cannot be done to secure your success.

Four years ago Genl Washburne in Wisconsin had as he supposed a majority of Rep Numbers pledged to him for the Senate. We rested upon this. Remained at Washington & the result Was the Election of Jim Horne.
In Trust my dear Gov dont rest too securely & allow the prize

now within your grasp to escape. or be Stolen from you.

I shall return to Nashville in about ten days or two weeks. Would be very glad to see you in Chicago & Consult before I leave. I am inclined to think that a few days Could be profitably spent by you in Chicago With the Cook delegation. The importance of the nine votes from Cook Co solid for you cannot be overestimated.

If however I do not see you allow me to say that it is not my intention to return from Tenn again until spring but When the Legislature meets if there is a man Who is not for you & Whom I can possibly reach With influence, persuasion or money, telegraph Me & I will be in Springfield in 36 to 48 hours.

                <text>

Recollect I will be at

Nashville.

Mrs Ferry sends her Kindness regards to you and Mrs Yates. She says she was much interested & pleased with your speech in Chicago & would have shook you by the hand as you went out but did not want to make herself "Conspicuous".

Very truly

Your Friend

Notice

what I propose to do is to colonize 600 families with the aid of the state and if the state will furnish one years provision I will furnish the names of sutch as are willing to go and take the benefit of the new law in sutch state or teritory as sutch persons shall vote to go within the United States it is my candid opinion that it will cost less to do this than to suport us for a number of years no telling how long besides it will place them in permanent homes and they will be less bills of rent

and we will not see so many aristocrats riding in fine carages when we are sufering here in this fair land. I wish to go but I will spend the last dime before I will see my pepal sufer so and others will do the same

She thinks the recent victory of the Union Party was the greatest achievement of the age. She is exceedingly glad that Lincoln is destined to rule the nation four years longer. And although it may be amusing she desires to assure the Governor that he will go to the Senate, and wants him to tell Mrs Yates so -

She complains that the citizens of that county don't follow the injunctions of the Govr's Speech at Galesburg for they over

should beg and the responds was never no never now I will come out bold and say some dos worse than bad they have to friez and starve to in this land of plenty it is a litel to bad and I for one will not submit to this way of doing mutch longer it is true I draw my pension but it is not suficient to suport my family at the rates we have to pay for every thing and I am not abel to worke and tend to my household duties and live decent as any one as my children is small my health will not permit me to chop wood and do mens work mutch longer I had not had one stick of wood choped since last March ownly what I cut myself I tended my garden and now it is all distroid by catel and horces my fence was nine bords high and post now do you say it is rite to submit to hav my property distroid and shubry ruind after having my husband enlist as a true patriot and he faught in nine hard batels and was in the service 1 year and nine months and never was home or sick or wounded and at last Murdred by gerilles near Black River Miss. in Co. K 55 Ill. Vol Col Stuart and O Malburg capton Black and Kendrick was capton when he was killed report is that Kendrick sold my husbands revolver and kept the money without informing me if he has I never recievd any thing NB I took one women and 3 children and kept them 6 weeks and her husband is at Clarkesvile Tenn in Co I 43 Reg Ill vol the oficers of their county would do nothing for her she has got a Room with one of my neighbors at present I took my last draw of my money and I spent it to protect her and her children

Ruth Green

let me here what you say to this

Notice

what I propose to do is to colonize 600 families with the aid of the state and if the state will furnish one years provision I will furnish the names of sutch as are willing to go and take the benefit of the new law in sutch state or teritory as sutch persons shall vote to go within the United States it is my candid opinion that it will cost less to do this than to suport us for a number of years no telling how long besides it will place them in permanent homes and they will be less bills of rent

and we will not see so many aristocrats riding in fine carages when we are sufering here in this fair land. I wish to go but I will spend the last dime before I will see my pepal sufer so and others will do the same

Obediently

Ruth Green

Green, Ruth

Abingdon Ills Nov 14th 64

She thinks the recent victory of the Union Party was the greatest achievement of the age. She is exceedingly glad that Lincoln is destined to rule the nation four years longer. And although it may be amusing she desires to assure the Governor that he will go to the Senate, and wants him to tell Mrs Yates so -

She complains that the citizens of that county don't follow the injunctions of the Govr's Speech at Galesburg for they over

allow Soldiers Widows to beg- She encloses a proposition for the Gov's consideration
