Your note and the package of speeches were received in due time. The speech I am distributing with pleasure as it has the right ring.

Our great victory is very gratifying to me, as it is to all loyal men. A large number of the rebels with whom I was compelled to associate in the Constitutional Convention & in the late Legislature have met their doom.

Our County & district gave larger Majorities than the most sanguine anticipated. The smallest majority in any township in this County was 120.

Now let the war be vigorously prosecuted. The rebellion be overthrown, and its cause (slavery) wiped out, and I can die in peace.

Dear Sir:

Your note and the package of speeches were received in due time. The speech I am distributing with pleasure as it has the right ring.

Our great victory is very gratifying to me, as it is to all loyal men. A large number of the rebels with whom I was compelled to associate in the Constitutional Convention & in the late Legislature have met their doom.

Our County & district gave larger Majorities than the most sanguine anticipated. The smallest majority in any township in this County was 120.

Now let the war be vigorously prosecuted. The rebellion be overthrown, and its cause (slavery) wiped out, and I can die in peace.

Truly Yours

L. W. Lawrence

You see I am placed in a trying position and must paddle my canoe in the current. I regret the issue. I will explain more at length when I see you .

He told me that Strain was inclined

to Suppot Genl Palmer.

Martin is an admirer of Gov Yates and I guarantee that he will Support you truly.

Strain is an inveterate Selfish office Seeker and is purely a man of policy. And I imagine is trying to get himself into a position from which to be bought back by a promise to be appointed to a Territorial Judgship. Long Sought For by him.

I will Keep you posted and will Do all I can to further your project &c

Martin will support you---his only objection being that he heard you were a Drunkard &c but if he can hear that your drinking will not impair your faculties he will go for you

He is your admirer and he thinks you can rely on him

Strain is an inveterate office seeker & wants to get in a position from which he can be induced by a promise of a Territorial Judgship which he has long

Hon Rich. Yates

Dear Governor,

This is the third letter I have written you within the past month, the first one I hope you have received, the second I fear is still within P.O at this Post, as one Genl Hood of the so called C.S.A. laid an embargo on our mails about that date - the date it was mailed.

My second letter was instigated by a letter from my father enclosing yours concerning the speeches sent to my address at Tuscola.

My father proposed unless otherwise directed to distribute your speeches, to see the member elect from Douglas & to do all in his power for you. Doubtless he has attended to the matter ere this.

When I wrote before I intended & fully expected to be present at Springfield during the first days of our next Legislative Session but as all means

of reaching the "United States" within the life of an ordinary "Leave of absence" are cut off, I have given up all hopes of the honor and pleasure I thus promised myself.

I will however do all I can with my pen & will write to several members elect & other prominent gentlemen today. With several members I am intimate & have considerable influence - with some perhaps as much as any citizen of Eastern Illinois.

Have you a clear track? I have incidentally learned that Logan & Palmer both have their eyes turned towards the Senatorship. I don't know anything but I understand Palmer has "cleared for action." A little scrap of history in my brain says that Palmer threw his influence & vote against Lincoln and elected a slipery kind of gentleman in "Honest Old Abe's" stead in 1854. I think my memory's is correct too; and the reason was P & T had always been - Democrats! Though I was not born early enough to even vote a Whig ticket, I believe my love of the old whig principles and more particularly my abhorence of Democratic trickery & treachery will live as long as I have a being.

I write this letter having fears my second letter will not reach you in proper time. Is Laurence Weldon going to continue as def atty for an additional term? What are my chances for an honorable position as a civilian? If indifferent, how about a promotion in the army? I would like promotion in the Judge Advocate's Department. I have very considerable experience in that position.

I will send this letter thro by an officer who is going to Indiana by way of Knoxville and Cumberland Gap. He is a member of the regiment I command at Chickamauga (81st 2nd Infy) & was wounded and captured during that battle. He is as escaped prisoner

For the manner Govr in which I commanded that regiment during that battle & afterwards I am well known to many Indianans & particularly to Gov. Morton. I could easily have had the Colonelcy of that regiment if I had consented but I could not cut loose from my old regiment & with it my interests as an Illinoisan. I have been assured by Indiana officers that Gov. Morton spoke very complimentary of me for my conduct then & said he was sorry that I was not an Indianian as he would at once make me a Colonel & that if ever I asked for anything he would give his name to my papers. This I have from officers of that regiment & citizens from Indiana twelve months ago. I have never before spoken of this

matter but as it naturally arises on this occasion, I thought proper to do so, for if I ask any favor of the Government, it may be proper to ask Gov. Morton for a favor he would so graciously bestow.

If a blockade is raised in the proper time I will try and be at Springfield as proposed. With a determination to all in my power to secure your triumphant election and with a wish for your health prosperity & happiness. I am with profound respect

I accordingly sd. to him at once, that I was pledged to you for that same office. He further sd. that your friends had represented that all the members of Washburne Disct. were for you, when in fact, no one of them was thus inclined.

Yesterday morning Mr. Jones, U.S. Marsl, made me a friendly call in my office, to secure any aid in electing Washburne of Galena, U.S. Senator.

I am a prompt & positive (not a negative) man.

I accordingly sd. to him at once, that I was pledged to you for that same office. He further sd. that your friends had represented that all the members of Washburne Disct. were for you, when in fact, no one of them was thus inclined.

I am most happy to say also that my most excellent partner, Mr. Reed (our present States Att'y) fully agrees with me in all these views and feelings above scripted.

This I Suspect is prompted by Baker who is a philosophical statesman with a supreme indifference to man as an individual & to the whole capoodle of politicians in general with a conscience which is almost as much in his way as that of Underwood at the same time with a great amount of policy in his composition---a good fellow

Waukegan, Ill. Dec 7th 1864

My Dear Gov.

Our mutual friend Geo. S. Baugs of the Aruna Beacon, as you are aware, paid me a visit on Friday last. in relation to matters personal to you. and from him, you have heard of the uncertainty of our Represitive E.B. Payne. For some reason, the young man is very non-committal. it is next to impossible to get an opinion or Expression out of him. I am of the opinion that he has been tampered with by his master E. M. Haines. who I am afraid is playing pup with you, after all his protestations of friendship and notwithstanding all the obligations he is under

to you. I tell you, Governer, the indian was not far from right when he said, "White man, mighty onsartin." I had my fears, & so had others of your friends here, that Haines would throw you when the time came that he could serve you. I am not sure of course that he is working against you now. but I hear he is for Washburne, in which case he cannot be for you. But whether he is trying to make capital against you, I cannot say, but I suspect as much. At all events he is doing nothing to help you along, as he was in duty bound to do. Therefore it is well Enough to count on his influence as with the opposition or "Combination."

I am taking occasion to labor daily with Payne. I

believe he will go straight yet. You may rest assured that I will "exhaust all my statesmanship" to make & keep him right, and if, in the sequel he turns against us, it shall not be my fault. He tells me he has received letters from you & a quantity of your Chicago Speech in pamphlet form. These he is sending out to his friends throughout the County. I noticed some of them going thru the P.O today. This does not look bad, to say the least. I am in hopes that the [illegible] is working & to a good purpose upon him. I will keep a close watch upon him & write you again, if any new developments present themselves.
