It may be of some advantage to you to know what the advocates of Washburne, are doing to achieve his success - You will find them unscrupulous and untiring in their efforts to accomplish your defeat. I learn that Swett, is enlisted on Washburne's side, and, that Ingersoll, has gone home in the same interest. I am told that the price of Ingersoll's assistance, is Washburne's aid in making Col Ingersoll, District Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. If you can offer any better or higher bid for his assistance, you can fetch him. I know Farnsworth & Norton are

for you - and I feel as if the whole delegation should go in the same direction. Washburne desires to have Rarish, of St. Louis; in his interest, but I do not believe he will be successful in obtaining it - Bestor, who is here, says he thinks seriously of going home to devote himself to your interests - if he could believe you really needed him he would do so at once. I understand Swett, agrees, as a reason. Why you should not be elected, that you are not true to your old friends - but I rather lead yourself to making new ones. To those who know you well, this objection will amount to nothing - I think Rob Cossill, of Woodford County--could assist you materially in putting and end to Ingersolls opposition Hoping for your Triumphant success, and the overwhelming defeat of Washburne. I am as always

S. Senator, and passed resolutions instructing Mr. Ford to go for you I have no doubt in my own mind that nine

tenths of the Union people of Henry County are for you and perhaps the majority is larger

You can count on Mr Ford with all Safety as he is a good man and will carry out what he undertakes to do; and his undertaking in this matter is the wishes of those who elected him to his present position

Very Truly

Geo. E. Wait

To Gov Yates

George E Wait

Geneseo Dec 1st 1864.

Has corresponded with Ford and finds he has no desire to go against the will of his constituents - and is very friendly to Governor.

They held a meeting and have instructed him to vote for Rich' Yates --

I received your letter Saturday a.m. & went to Joliet the evening of same day. It has been my opinion---if you will allow me the liberty of saying so---that you had better treat the Penitentiary in a brief, general, & non-committal way. But I hoped to find the report of Superintendent McGregor in such a state of forwardness as would give me the particulars you ask for. Mr. Bergin, however, has failed to keep his appointments with the Superintendent and the work on the report drags. And now Mr. Bergin writes us from Washington that he will not be able to help us at all. It is a disappointment and perplexity to Judge Parks and myself, who are comparatively new in the Institution. But we shall, notwithstanding, be able to make a proper report---one that, I am confident, cannot be picked to pieces. I don't believe there is half as much rottenness in the management of the Institution as there is in---a certain newspaper concern!

I have telegraphed to Dr. Buck to come in to-morrow to consult with reference to one or two points, when I shall go to Joliet again

Hon Richard Yates

Springfield Il

My Dear Sir & Friend

Your favor of the 10th I found onn my return home yesterday morning after an absence of one week on official business. I learned that Dr. Sedgwick our member Elect had resigned, and an individual was spoken of, to fill the vacancy, who I was not satisfied would be reliable on the senatorial vote. I took a friend with me and drove to Wheaton to see H C Childs Esqr. He is not only reliable on the Senator but every other question that may come up for consideration and action of the Legislature

a man of good practical sense. I urged upon him the importance of his consenting to accept the nomination, which he finally did. Mr Childs is chairman of our County Committee. Mr Skinner the friend I took with me is also a member of the county committee who with Mr Childs constituted a majority of the executive committee. They decided to to call a meeting for nominating a candidate for the H.R. Hence the reason of my Telegraphing you to Officially notify H. C Childs of the resignation of Dr Sedgwick. Also it is important our county clerk be notified if not when you receive this please do so and order the Election, as the time is very short before the Election. If Mr Childs is nominated, which I have no doubt of, you can count on DuPage County for her vote, and the influence of her members. As to Dr Sedgwick I was not certain of his vote for you I supposed he would vote for you until I received a letter from him

on the subject a short time before I left home I found by that letter his mind had been been changed by the charges against you to which you allude in yours. I feel well satisfied with the situation in our county.

Now my Dear Sir as you have so freely spoken to me in relation to yourself, you will not be offended if I use freedom as a friend in speak'g to you. Your friends and their name is "legion", all have deeply regretted your misfortune in the too free use, at times, of intoxicating drink. it is the only charge, My Friend, that I have ever heard brought against you. No man in the State of Illinois has the confidence, and warm affection of the people of the state more fully than yourself, Except for this one misfortune; and this is being taken advantage of by your opponents, to your damage If it is in your power and I believe it is,

4

I trust you will exercise that power and control the habit so effectually that you will obtain a complete victory, for all time, and be free from this heretofore great misfortune. Very many of your friends and I am amongst the number believe that you will. It would cause many a true and loyal heart to rejoice. It will cost you a struggle, the object is worthy of a continual struggle. - As you have taken a position to retrive, perhaps it might be thought by your friends that you would be the gainer by not having the Election for Senator take place immediately after the meeting of the Legislature. Of this it can better be judged of after consultation with all the Union Members as to how you stand on a vote. It is as you presumed very desirable the vote should be as neatly running as possible. There may be some & perhaps many that would give you this vote after an acquaintance personal with you, that would not if pressed to a vote at once. Gov Yates you possess talents

Naperville, Dec 19 1864

Show to the world that you have broken and thrown off the shackles no more to be encumbered by them. You are embedded in the best affection of our soldiers, (God bless them), and known to all as a true patriot. You may place me amongst your warmest friends. I expect to be at Springfield on or about the first of Jany. I have written to the Comissn for leave of absense for a short time. if granted by the Secrety of the Treasry, I shall be in Springfield. I leave thinking to be absent this week. I have written in great haste Believe me Truly Your Friend

Dec 19th 1864.

G. Barrere Esq.

Dear Sir,

On my return from the Bureau Court, I found yours of the 9th awaiting me.

In regard to the Senatorship, I have to say that I have recd several letters, and seen several persons, in the interest of Govr Yates, and altho I am not committed to any candidate, and have no other than the most friendly feeling for the Governor, I am afraid his unfortunate habit is to firmly fixed to withstand the temptations of Washington life, his good resolutions nevertheless.

He was my first choice for Governor, and I was proud when he was nominated and elected. And I have stood by him, in my humble way. "through evil as well as through good report." And I am now sorry to say that when his friends, and intimate acquaintances ask me to vote for him, they cannot say but that he does drink. And although he promises reformation, we know too well the small value of such promises. I shall never forget the servises he has rendered the country, and when it is certain that he has reformed I shall not be slow to award him so far as I can the position to which he would be justly entitled in such case.

In view of remarks I have heard as comeing from the friends of the Gov. it may be impolitic for me to occupy the position I do. But the position is ,in my, judgment right, and I will stand by the consequences. One is reported as saying that "Gov Y. is the ear of Juggernaut," and another, that he will be elected any how, and that "the men who vote against him will be spotted." If so, so be it. My political aspirations are not verry extensive; And you know Clay said he "would rather be right than be President."

I do not know how Mr. Martin stands further than that he is a [strawmans?] temperance man.

Yours truly James Strain

                    <text>
Geneva Ill Dec 17. 1864

Dear Governor.

At the suggestion of Mr Mayborne I have during the past week made a short excursion, and visited Fuller, Lansing and others.

It would be doing you no kindness to conceal the fact that there are more elements of opposition to your election, especially among the politicians than I was aware of. With as little intimacy as has existed between you & myself it may seem like a want of delicacy on my part to refer to the main, and I may say to the only objection urged against you, but I am sure you will appreciate my motives for doing so. Rest assured that my sole desire is to contribute what I can towards placing you in the position which I still beleive nine tenths of the people spontaneously accord to you. Premising thus much, I will say that your opponents are untiring in circulating stories of your dissipated habits and endeavoring to create the impression that it would be unsafe to place you in the Senate. These reports carry all the more weight among the masses, coming as they do from men who profess to be personally your warm friends.

Nor can the fact be ignored that we have

in these northern counties a population which if once made to believe that your career in Washington would be similar to Richardson's in respect to intemperance they would oppose your election, however much they might otherwise desire it.

Now I have said to the people two things, first that the stories in relation to your drinking in time past have been greatly exaggerated -- that I have met you frequently during the last three years and never saw you the worse for liquor; and secondly that I have the best reason for beleiving that in the time to come your course will be all that can be desired -- that I am so well satisfied of this that I can conscientiously and urgently advise your election. And above all that these reports in most cases are circulated by men who are actuated by sinister motives, and care little whether the stories are true or false.

I passed the night at Fuller's and we had an unreserved talk. I have no doubt of his friendship for you, and my strong impression is that he will go for you. In relation to Lansing I have my fears. I had a long interview with him, during which I kept constantly before him the unanimity of the people in his district in your favor, and the duty of a member of the legislature to carry out the wishes of his constituents. He did not say

he should be against you, and expressed his warm personal friendship, but he thinks the centre of the State has had everything and that the north has been neglected. And I suspect that there are other considerations in the case to which it would do no good to refer.

Dr. Sedgwick of DuPage to my surprise made up his mind that he could not vote for you and beleiving that his people were for you has resigned his seat. If an election can be held in time a Yates man will be chosen. I saw Childs yesterday and he is warmly for you. He will probably take Sedgwick s place. You can judge whether it is best to delay the nomination of Senator a few days. Have you ordered an election in DuPage? Our Senator & member (Allen & Mann) are both for you. Brown of Winnebago desires to go for you but is hesitating as to his duty. I am told he will not go for Washburne. It is thought by some that they will steal away the entire Chicago delegation, but how they are to get such men as Eastman I am a little curious to know. It seems they have Ward.

Now I have one suggestion of my own to make, and another proposed by two or three of your best friends here. Allen is in favor of going at once into the election and perhaps it may be best, but my idea is that if upon

looking over the ground you shall find that there is any doubt about the result, it would be well to postpone the caucus a few days thus giving you an opportunity to mingle freely among the members & by your conduct and personal appearance give the lie to the stories that are being circulated.

The other suggestion, made by Mayborne & Childs is one which I confess did not at first impress me favorably. They propose that in cause the issue is doubtful, you should pledge yourself that in the event of your election you would resign your seat should you disappoint the expectation of your friends by falling into habits of intemperance. <text>

This proposition struck me as a little degrading and of doubtful utility. But they seemed quite confident it might save a few votes and that under the circumstances there would be no impropriety in your giving such a pledge.

I was highly pleased to recieve yours of a few days since & the information therein contained with most of which however I was previously familiar. I scarcely know what to say in reply but as you say you have been informed that I felt friendly towards you so I may say that your information was correct - but I must further say that I am not now prepared to give any definite intimation of the course I may take on the question of the U S Senatorship - and this from no lack of friendly feeling towards yourself as want of appreciation of your abilities or services

in the common cause of preserving the Nation. You are of course aware that we have been represented in Congress for the past two years by Copperhead Harris who thank God; has met the fate that sooner or later will be visited on all of his strife, and that previously we were represented by Arnold of Chicago whose interests and instincts were all opposed to over of this locality. We have therefore been compelled to depend upon outsiders for assistance and Mr Washburn has done us many favors which some of our people think ought to be remembered now, while others think he can wait in his present position which is certainly an honorable one till a more convenient reason. We feel that our interest since the location of the U S Arsenal and Rebel Prison here deserve some atten-

I may also say that those here, want engaged in aiding Mr Washburn are not particularly my personal friends, nor are they yours. Under the circumstances therefore I do not wish at present to commit myself in this question. I may however say that I am not a party to any combination respecting this matter, and that I should be pleased to be kept posted as to the further aspects this question may take on.

Dr Sir

We feel that our interest since the location of the U S Arsenal and Rebel Prison here deserve some atten-

tion more than they have had heretofore recieved from our congressman & senator. Hoping that you will appreciate my position & the spirit in which this is written I subscribe myself very respectfully

Yours &c

A. Webster

Rock. Island Dec 17th 64

Thanks you for your letter He entertains the most friendly feelings towards you, but being placed in a peculiar position he cannot commit himself to you or any one. They have needed favors there from those outside of their Representatives & Congressman and Mr Washburne has ever shown them every favor in his power - hence they are under obligations to him, but differ as to the time of reciprocating. He is not in any combination, and shall not be.

I had an interview with E + Mayor H. G. Hardin this morning upon the subject with a view of reaching Strain through him. I may succeed. yet I think is not entirely safe to count on his vote
