</p><p>I have just been informed that there has a grand combination taken place between J. A. Logan & E. B. Washburne. I know they went together to see Grant, and I surmised at the time that W. was trying to get John's influence in his behalf.
</p><p>Today a western senator remarked that W. was trying very hard to have John promoted to Brig. Gen'l. in Regular Army.
</p><p>I will further state Washburne's friends here are all bitter enemies of yours.
</p><p>I hope you will succeed and defeat E.B.W.s plans.
