Born in Galesburg, Sandburg attended school until the age of 13 when he left to work several jobs to help his family. In his late teens Sandburg served in the United States Army during the Spanish-American War. After leaving the military Sandburg enrolled at Lombard College however he left the school before finishing his degree. Sandburg worked as a newspaper writer in Milwaukee and Chicago. He began publishing his poetry in Poetry: A Magazine of Verse before publishing his first book of poetry, Chicago Poems, in 1916. Sandburg received his first Pulitzer Prize for Cornhuskers in 1918.
