Gov. Yates

Dear Gov.

I understand that many of our regiments are destitute of "Medical officers" and are in great need of Surgeons.

If this is the case, could you not appoint me to one of the destitute regiments as Surgeon?

I have had considerable experience in "Military Practice", having been doing duty as Surgeon in different Hospitals, South, for a number of months. I have just returned from "Genl. Hospital" at Monterey Tenn. where I have been to work ever since its organization.

I would rather be connected with a Regiment than, to be detailed for Hospital Service, and think I could be of more service to our troops.

I would refer you to Dr. H. A. Johnson Dr. J. H. Hollister Dr. N. S. Davis Dr. R. N. Isher Dr. Byford, of Chicago, Brig Sur. Derby, under whom I served at Monterey, now at Memphis, Dr. E. Andrews & J. M. Woodworth of the first Ill. Artillery. Brig. Sur. E. O. F. Boler, of the 55th Ill. and Brig. Sur. Charles McDougle, Medical Director at Pittsburg Landing, who employed me as "Contract Surgeon" when I went into service.

Could I ask that you would let me know, if you will do anything for me?

I can be examined by the Pres. of the "Medical examining Board" if I am sure of an appointment, after passing, the Board.

I can be ready to enter upon the discharge of a Surgeons duties, at any time, if you say so (?)

I am with respect, truly

Gov. Yates

                    <text>
Camp near Jacinto Mifs July 19th 1862

Gov Yates

Yesterday I was invited to Col Colers and introduced to one of your "Creation" a man by the name of Paddock as first Lieut Co H 25th Regiment Ills Vol. I was surprised I was chagrined mortified, felt humbled disgraced, to think that such a Booby was thrust upon my company without their or my knowledge or consent, contrary to any known rule of Justice in any sense whatever. Some days since at the request of Col Coler, I forwarded a reccommendation in connection with his for one I thought best qualified to fill the place And now I find this has not been respected. A captain certainly should know who is the proper one to be reccommended in his company for promotion. Whilst I know I am but Captain and the Men under me but privates - Men that are making monuments of their Bones at thirteen dollars per month and quarter Rations to gratifying the ambition of Damnable Demagouges fit companions for the Damned in Hell, I still think they are not Dogs that there wishes their comfort should at least have a little weight in the scramble for Position

What encouragement is there for men to do their duty. What is to emulate them in their long marches what to cheer in their days of watching and their nights of vigilance when an Executive, "By the Grace of God," becomes the sovereign, and pays no respect to what common sense in the absence of Military usage would dictate. Napoleon said "Bayonets think" yes and Bayonets act, they have acted upon the field, while traitors have been plotting evil and scrambling for Position for Pets and favorites and after this war is ended and its history began to written and finished in Blood, fearful will be the reckoning of those who have trifled and trampled upon all the rights and the few privileges of the Poor Soldier. The congratulations of Executive and Congresses is but poor consolation for the Poor Soldier when all prospect for promotion is cut off by the one Man Power There will be no more Hobbies to ride. the "Almighty Nigger" and the "dignity of Labor" are about played out. and Men are thinking, men will act different. the Men of my company when they heard your Great Speech at Tuscola uttering the sentiments of at least the equality of white men and that giving to Labor that dignity that it required thought as I did that you were honest in it, but Alas!! Actions speak louder than words

I am not pleading my own cause I am not mortified as it regards myself if I felt so I should not appeal to you for redress I am satisfied as to the estimate you place upon me I was fool enough once to unburdle to you that I would like to have a good position and if you will forgive me for it I will never do so again notwithstanding you had so often said that if ever you had it in your Power you intended to do something for me but I suppose you made similar promises to thousands of others I shall feel content, knowing there was not places for all and thank you that you felt "inclined so to do"

I would advise you for the sake of your "Protege" the aforesaid Paddock to get him a place more congenial as for being 1st Lieut of my company in spirit it cant be so a committe of those "dignified Laborers" waited on him this morning and informed him to that effect he may draw the pay, but never the countenance or respect of the men Hoping the War will terminate in time to assist in making you Senator

                <text>

                    <text>
With O. Waters 7/19/62

Bloomington July 19, 1862

Hon. Richard Yates, Gov. of Ill.

Dear Sir

I would like the office of Government tax collector for this district. I think Capt. Shannon spoke to you on Thursday night in reference to my fitness for the office.

I am forty seven years of age, was brought up a farmer in the state of N Y. Taught school several years then engaged in the drug and medicine trade. By steady application to business I accumulated property to the value of about thirty thousand dollars.

I have a trustworthy foreman who can manage all my present interests, having me at liberty to devote my whole attention to the office I solicit. I have had dealings nearly all over the state and my extensive acquaintance in other counties would assist me

greatly in making subdivision appointments. I have never before offered myself for office and never accepted an office of profit to the value of once cent. I have formerly had to look after too many mixed private interests and I want no office unless the public want me.

I enclose a line from a few of our citizens whom I thought you would likely be acquainted with. I find Tho. Bunn of this place had been around with a paper before me and got many important names.

Bunn is a young man, has failed in trade once and has not recovered so as to pay his debts. The citizens did not recommend his ability to give security and say he has no chance for the office. I learn he & Peter Fulsom are going to Washington to solicit the two offices of Col. and assessor.

If after considering my fitness for the office you will recommend my appointment to this office or other valuable home position you will confer a great favor on

me and I hope on the Public.

If you can not, you will not incur my disfavor for I know you will act conscientiously in the matter for the public good.

If you recommend my appointment it may be wise to send on the enclosed certificate.

I have long desired the passage of the confiscation bill and anticipated favourable results whenever it can be enforced. I was a Democrat until 1854 and was one of the first sixteen who inaugurated the Republican party in Bloomington. I feel assured its principles will yet triumph.

Awaiting your action I am yours very respectfully

In raising the new Infantry Regiments for the State of Ills. it is essential both for the troops and Government, that they should be officered by men well instructed both theoretically and practically in that arm of the service

Governor of Ills.

Sir

Having served nearly a year in the 12th Regt. Missouri Volunteers, since I left Ills and had the pleasure of waiting on you at Springfield Ills., I take this opportunity of asking a favor of you, which I then foolishly declined; namely, I should like to be promoted to the Ills service, where I served as 1st Lieut in the 9th Reg in the three months service. Nearly a year ago, when at Springfield Ills, I thought the danger in Missouri was eminent, and I was determined to meet the enemy on the first occasion regardless of position. I have since,
with deep regret, found out, that it is a very embarrasing position for an officer in the Missouri service, who was born and raised in Ills. and who is justly pround of what Ills has done in this war, not only in battle, but also through the energy of its executive department, so much in contrast with Missouri. Outside of this, I always would be prefer, serving as a volunteer in my own native State, where a just executive eye sees and watches vigilantly, that justice is done to every soldier. During these eleven months I have served

in a Regt which has gained a reputation for its bravery in battle and its patient endurance of hunger and hardships and I may say that the two companies A and B from Belleville Ills. everywhere sustained their reputation for bravery and endurance surpassed by none in the Regt. As Riflemen and skirmishers this Regt. has a high reputation in the whole southwest army. I should prefer such a Regt. because I have, during a march of 1100 miles through an enemy's country, become theoretically and practically acquainted with
this branch of the service on different occasions.

Any promotion to the Ills. service whether Infantry or cavalry would be preferable to my remaining here and would be hailed with pride.

I would, however most respectfully request you, should you be kind enough to think of my promotion, not to put aside or overlook any officer more deserving or meritorious or preferred by the respective Regt.

Hoping that this meet you well and that I do not trespass to much upon your time and patience I remain your most obedient

Fred L Ledergerber Capt. 12th Mo Vol

Hoping that this meet you well and that I do not trespass to much upon your time and patience I remain your most obedient

aloft until the rebelion was crushed out of
existance Others came forward promptly
joined the company and filled the places
of those who were killed wounded unable
or unwilling to return They too were
anxious to fight beneath this tattered
silken emblem of our nations glory
but unfortuneately all were doomed to suffer
disappointment Yet all of these men have
served their country honestly and faithfully from the day they were mustered in

who forgot what they had sworn to do and who were
encouraged by men who held positions that gave
them a powerful influence Tempted by the life
of idleness and pleasure which the rebelious
ones enjoyed Threatened by an overwhelming force of the Enemy and in hourly expectation of an attack When others discovered
their fine sense of "honor" and threw down their
arms which brought redoubled labor on these
men who were serving For more than two
weeks every night and every day upon
guard non commissioned officers taking their
regular turn of guard as privates in addition
to their regular duties without complaint

knew that Gen Carters' Command depended upon

would follow them thereby virtually surrendering
to the enemy the line of communication with

trying circumstances When more or less of every
