<text>
Headquarters, 14th Reg. Ill Volunteers,

Near Memphis, Tenn. Aug. 8. 1862.

His Excellency, Governor Yates.

Sir:

Captain Dudley C. Smith of Co. B. 14th Reg. Ill Volunteers, who has served with distinction and to general acceptance, with this Regiment from its organization up to the present time, would gratefully receive the position of Colonel in one of the new Regiments now forming in Illinois.

It is but an act of simple justice to Captain Smith to say that, as a disciplinarian and tactician, he has few equals, and no superiors, in this or any other Volunteer Retirement now in the field. He is a man of unblemished character and his energy and perseverance would win laurels for himself and reflect honor upon our noble Sucker State. With his knowledge of and experience in the service and his habits of industry, he could not fail of success.

On the memorable battlefield of Shiloh, April 6th. Capt. Smith was at his post of duty in the Regiment until 11 o'clock, when he was borne from the field very severely wounded. He was cool, brave and self possessed, and, to the last, by word and example, encouraged his men to deeds of rare heroism.

Very Respectfully

Your obedient Servant,

Cyrus Hall Col

Commandg 14th Regt

Ills Vol Infty.

The Above is fully concurred in and endorsed.
