August 21st 1864

Colonel John M. Snyder

Dear Sir - I have thus far managed to get along first-rate, and have to thank you for the kind interest manifested in my behalf.

Rolla is a miserable hole, and I don't think the authorities could have planted us in a worse place, with, perhaps, the exception of that location where dealers in coal have no occasion to pursue their interesting vocation. The health of the Regiment has been very bad - we have lost several by disease. Newton and George Rutledge, however, are as hearty as a couple of bucks, and send their respects and regards to you.

The men of the 145th have been greatly disappointed in Colonel Lackey - in

what manner I leave you to surmise. You know that an humble subaltern would be very imprudent to criticise his Colonel too closely.

If you see Mackenzie I wish you would tell him, for me, that this hundred day trip would have been a "bully trip" for him. He'd have learned something else besides making money.

One thing more, I want to bore you again by asking you as a special favor to request the Governor and Gen. Fuller to grant me permission to raise a company for special State service. I am confident I can raise a full one, composed of good men. I wish you would send me such written authority at your earliest convenience and I will go to work.

Hoping that this will be my last

round in Missouri, I subscribe myself

Yours truly

J. M. Prior

P.S. Allow me to congratulate you on the new phase in your existence, and Newt requests me to ask "How much will you give for a substitute?"

J. M. P.

You authorized my Father last winter to organize an infantry company for service during the war. He enlisted the men, got the required number, but had no rendezvous, or boarding place for his men so he was compelled to give it up; he was determined to serve his country in some capacity. Captain Delano of the 2d Cav Regt Ill Vol an acquaintance and friend sent him a pass and requested him to join his company at Camp Holt. Captain D was shortly after shot by his 1st Lieut, immediately after his death the 2d Lieut was elected Captain. he is young & inexperienced. My Father is 46 yrs of age has been in the U S Dragoons under Gen Kearney & Col. Dodge from the years 1833 until 1836, also in the Indian wars in Upper Cal and Oregon in 1852. Many of his

He has been serving in the present war six months and does not want to leave the service, but would be satisfied better if placed where he could do more good, and render more efficient service. Knowing my Fathers abilities, that he is a military man and has had large experience, and is qualified to do better service in some other capacity, and knowing also that he is dissatisfied in his present position, I should feel deeply obligated should you notice my request and in your power give him a situation where he would feel that he was being more useful to his country than by serving under such inexperienced officers.

I can refer you to Thos Sharp Attorney at Law, W. K. Davidson Editor of the Warsaw Bulletin or Dr Hay Post Master. They will testify to my Fathers abilities and qualifications for any office you may choose to assign him to. Hoping to hear from you in regard to what I have written I will bring these lines to a close.

Yates, waited six weeks for his turn to come on the list of Candidates to come before the Med. Board, & a few days prior to his expected examination recd a letter from Dr H. L. Johnson of this city, Chairman of the Examining Board, stating that "it would be useless for him to apply, for no matter what his qualification the Board had resolved not to recommend an Homeopathist." The same thing was tried last week with another Candidate with the same result. It would be of no possible service for you to apply &
