Dear Sir:

Your favor of 19th August is just to hand; and I hasten to reply on two accounts 1st the letter you speak of as having been sent to me from the Govr has not yet come to hand & this is now the 23d

2d It was myself that desired a place on Sigel, Fremont or C. M. Clay's staff if they or either of them should be assigned to a command: my desire is to be with an energetic live fighting Genl who comprehends the magnitude of the struggle & fears not to take such means & measures as will adequately meet every emergency

and so for ever remove the producing cause of Rebellion & have a Union that shall be permanent & ever enduring

In answering this & all others I wish you would do so under cover to Wm C. Bostwick Esq. as perhaps under such shelter my letters may not be so long delayed & some never arrive at their proper destinations

hoping to receive the Govs letter soon I remain very Truly yours & his friend
