I regret to say, than on making the necessary application to Dr Slone the Medical Director, he peremptorily refused, but only on the ground that he was positively prohibited under the regulations of the War Department from doing so. One of them, a sergeant of the McClellan Dragoons is badly wounded through the foot, and it will be months before he is fit for service again even with the most skilful and carefuly nursing. I believe in less than thirty days, it will prove an entire success. Arrangements are being made to visit different portions of the State and no pains <hr /> will be spared to secure a prompt organization of the regiment. - We all thank you for your prompt assistance and kind efforts in obtaining authority from the Department at Washington. - For myself I fully appreciate the favor and shall certainly reciprocate if any opportunity ever offers. Sir Enclosed find two letters of recommendation, one from Colonel Dollins commanding 81st Ill Vol and one from the Surgeons attending this Hospital which you please consider in reference to granting me a Commission in some new Regiment or in my own if there be a vacancy in it.
