If you are embarrassed in not having the right party at hand I should not hesitate to say that Major Merrill will fill the place well &amp; reliably - full of energy &amp; courage and withal a great friend of yours. I have an order to go before the board but it has been about two months since I first applied &amp; yet no time set &amp; I presume I will not get before them for a month yet - having no appointment which shall make my case urgent. If it be improper to give me a place in advance of the examination will you be kind enough to order me forthwith before the board &amp; thus let me get a chance somewhere in the advancing columns of Genl. Buels Command. I am informed by Col. Harmon of 125 that of the incumbents in his Reg is dissatisfied &amp; if I am ready to come on_ But that is some uncertainty compared with an appointment.
