Genl." "Fill every vacancy without delay. Col Loomis reported here under orders yesterday to select Surgeon for his command and immediately telegraphed Dr Johnson at Chicago & he replied Dr Green had presented himself for examination but withdrew Col L. was in haste to rejoin his regt and having made the acquaintance of Dr Whitehill yesterday in this Office (and who, as he, (Dr W.) avers, reported here (after passing Board) at direction or request of Genl Fuller, to be assigned wherever a vacancy might <hr /> be) and being favorably impressed with the Doctors appearance, concluded to select and recommend him for the post of Surgeon &c. His appointment or recommendation is on file, and Col L left on 11 am train to day for Corinth with direction for Dr Whitehill to follow as quickly as possible I have acted, as I thought, within limits of your instructions to the Dept. and the Genls direction to me, and with all candor, I would state, without a wish or desire to assume even that which could be though, unbecoming or officious Since receipt of intelligence that the appointment does not meet your approval I called on Dr Whitehill (who has not been mustered) and he in a very candid and gentlemanly way returned the order to the Office and awaits your pleasure in the premises. Orme of the McLean County Regiment (now on service at Springfield, Mo.) addressed to Prof. H. A. Johnson of this city, and president of the Board of Medical Examinors, asking him to examine me without delay, for the post of 2nd Assistant Surgeon of his (Orme's) regiment. Will you have the kindness to send as soon as possible to Prof. Johnson the necessary official order to authorize me to appear before the honorable Board. The letter from Col. Cairo Oct 12th 1862 Gov Yates Dear Sir I wright to inform you how business is geting along in this department, at this place up to this time I have received and shiped 42 Boyes 22 ½ Barrell and 20 sack sanitary supplies. Unless their is moor supplies I do not think it pays voory well. I have paid for article sent by Express $5.50 which might have been sent as freight free. In every instance where I have rote to society I have said to them to send as freight free. I had a conversation with the Rev Folsom this morning. He says his son [Fall?] Folsom will attend to all the business of this office at your own terms at certainly less than half the expices I have to pay.
