<text>
The first classes at the McCormick Theological Seminary took place in a log cabin in Indiana in 1829. During the Civil War the school relocated to Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. In 1859 Chicago entrepreneur and Presbyterian layman Cyrus H. McCormick and his wife, Nettie Fowler McCormick, became the seminary's major financial patrons. The relationship between the McCormick family and the school remained well into the twentieth century. Shortly after McCormick’s death in 1884, the school was renamed McCormick Theological Seminary. Several campus buildings are named for McCormick family members including McCormick Hall, Fowler Hall, and Virginia Library.

After Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination in 1968, seminary faculty and students were active in the civil rights movement and provided assistance to displaced and injured participants. The seminary relocated to Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood in 1975.

The photographs in this collection include portraits of the McCormick Theological Seminary Class of 1896, school professors, and campus buildings.
</text>

As one of the board of medical examiners I have thought it my duty to call your attention to the fact that Dr. Metcalf is acting as Surgeon to Col. Without any feeling of personal interest in the matter I submit, most respectfully, to you to decide whether all should not alike obey

Dear Sir,

Most sincerely and heartily do I congratulate you upon your election to the Senate. I was well aware that your popularity was such that nothing could prevent your election, but I had reason to believe that intrigues were on foot in Illinois to defeat it, and I was therefore over-joyed when I heard that you were duly nominated and elected. I have taken a warm interest in Illinois politics for some time, and have been greatly pleased with the active, patriotic part you have assumed in behalf of Lincoln and Liberty.

I trust, Gov. Yates, you will prosecute the editor for slander; no punishment a court could allow would be too severe for him. But, after all, it is perhaps as well that no notice should be taken of the article. The World is read by Copperheads alone: no honest Union man takes it.

I am of the opinion that if Gov. Seward retires from the Cabinet on the 4th of March he will go to the Senate in place of Gov. Morgan, who will resign to become Secretary of the Treasury. Such is the understanding here. I think it is beyond question that Senator Morgan will be the next Secretary of the Treasury.

Governor of Illinois,

Sir:--

I would call your attention to the fact, that I have been a citizen of the State of Illinois, for several years, residing in Richland County.--that I moved to Mound City, with my family, the 19th of March, 1862. & entered into contract the same day, as one of the citizen physicians to the U. S. General Hospital. Today--I offered my vote--"Against New Constitution," which was rejected by two of the Judges, (Thos Kirk, & W. O. Watts.) upon the ground of my being in Government employ, & consequently not entitled to the rights of citizenship. Two weeks ago- I voted here - at the municipal election. Judge Kirk then decided that I was a citizen. (I voting for him.) but the same man, (Kirk) now deciding that I am not a citizen.--Again, an employee, in this Hospital, who came here since I have, was allowed to vote--he voting for the constitution. And again, as I am informed, fifteen U. S. soldiers were told they could vote for "New Constitution," but after ascertaining they would all vote against it, the judges suddenly discovered that soldiers had not the right of suffrage. We would also state--that W. O. Watts, one of the acting judges, has his family in Kentucky, & that they removed there more than six months ago, & by many he has not been

considered a citizen of this state, since last winter, & yet--he voted. If it is necessary--we can give the names of parties here alluded to- we can make affidavit as to the truth of our assertion. We then ask:- Shall citizens of Illinois be disfranchised by political tricksters, because they do their country service, & choose to have a thinking mind of their own? Shall every knave stand at the polls, & dictate to freemen--who shall exercise the rights of citizenship? - Now, Sir, I desire to have you lay this before the proper authorities, & have my note recorded against an infamous measure. In my opinion - had I voted for the "New Constitution," my vote would have been received. As the election has been conducted in Mound City, this day--it is a fraud upon the rights of citizens of Illinois, --upon free-born Americans.--A copy of this communication has been furnished the judges.

We would also state--that W. O. Watts, one of the acting judges, has his family in Kentucky, & that they removed there more than six months ago, & by many he has not been
