Davenport fought in the United States Army during the War of 1812 and later in the Black Hawk War. Davenport worked with settlers along the Mississippi River as a trader American Fur Company. He served as a United States Indian Agent for the Sauk and the Fox from 1838-1840. Davenport retired after helping to negotiate a treaty between the Sauk and Fox and the Iowa territorial government over the sale of land in Iowa. Davenport was murdered in his home by a gang of bandits in 1845.
