The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Army American Civil War (1861-1865) Description An account of the resource John McAuley Palmer was born in Scott County, Kentucky in 1817. His family emigrated to Illinois in 1831, settling near Alton. Palmer entered Shurtleff College 1834 where he stayed two years. He moved to Carlinville in 1839 and read law in office of John S. Greathouse before admittance to the bar in 1839. Palmer was elected as a delegate to the 1847 Illinois Constitutional Convention. Palmer was elected as probate judge of Macoupin County in 1843. He won election to the Illinois State Senate in 1852 and served until 1856. Palmer helped form the Republican Party in Illinois, serving as President of the Bloomington Convention in May 1856 and as a delegate to the Republican National Convention at Philadelphia in June. Palmer was defeated as a Republican candidate for Representative to Congress. Palmer began his military career in May 1861 as Colonel of the Fourteenth Illinois Infantry. He received the rank of Brigadier-General in December 1861, commanding the 1st Division of Army of Mississippi at Stone River and Chickamauga. He was rewarded with the rank of Major-General and served Military Commander of District of Kentucky, 1865-1866. After his time in the military Palmer practiced law in Springfield with Milton Hay beginning in 1867. Palmer was elected Governor of Illinois on Republican ticket in 1868. He joined Liberal Republican Party in 1872 and soon after the Democratic Party. Palmer ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic candidate for Governor in 1888. He won election to the United States Senate, serving from 1891-1897. After his time in the Senate, Palmer returned to private life in 1897 where he edited Bench and Bar in Illinois (1899) and wrote Personal Recollections (1901). Stevens was a lawyer, banker, newspaper editor and writer based in Illinois. Stevens was born and educated in Dixon, Illinois. He studied law in Sycamore, Illinois, and was admitted to the bar in 1877. Shortly after that he moved to South Dakota where he operated the Beadle County National Bank until 1890 when he moved to Chicago and worked in a brokerage business. In 1907 Stevens returned to Sycamore, Illinois, where he published the Dixon Weekly Citizen and later the Sycamore Tribune. He retired from the newspaper business in 1928 and was elected mayor of Sycamore in 1931. Governor Henry Horner appointed Stevens to the War Records Division of the office of the Adjutant General. Stevens was a historian who authored several historical works including The Black Hawk War. Stevens used the majority of the items in the collection while researching and writing The Black Hawk War. The Black Hawk War (1832), although brief, has much significance for Native American history. In April, tribal groups of Sauk, Meskwakis, and Kickapoo, led by Chief Black Hawk of the Sauk, crossed the Mississippi River from Iowa into Illinois. Known as the British Band, they claimed lands under the 1804 Treaty of St. Louis, a treaty the whites disputed. Fearful, militia’s fired on the Native American delegation in what led to the Battle of Stillman’s Run, a resounding defeat for the militias. Black Hawk was eventually defeat, however, at the battles of Wisconsin Heights and Bad Axe. Historically, the Black Hawk War legitimized and strengthened forcible relocation of Native American tribes further west. The finding aid for the Frank E. Stevens Collection Title A name given to the resource Walter Bennett Scates Description An account of the resource Walter Bennett Scates poses for a photograph which was later used as a memorial portrait. Scates moved to Illinois in 1831 and began practicing law. He served as States Attorney pro tem (1831-1834), Attorney General (1836), Judge of the Third Judicial Circuit (1836-1841), Illinois Supreme Court Justice (1841-1847), and Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court (1853-1855). He served as a brigadier general during the Civil War. After the war he was the Collector of Customs for the Port of Chicago (1866-1869) before resuming his law practice for the remainder of his life until his death in 1886. During his two terms in the Illinois Supreme Court, Scates heard 133 cases in which Abraham Lincoln was an attorney of record. Supreme Court Judges Antislavery movements Trumbull, Julia Maria Jayne, 1824-1868 Politicians' spouses Description An account of the resource Lyman Trumbull was born in Colchester, Connecticut on October 12, 1813, to Benjamin and Elizabeth (Mather) Trumbull. In 1837 he moved to Belleville, Illinois, and won election to the state legislature as a Democrat in 1840.  Trumbull was appointed Secretary of State from 1841-1842 and later a justice of the State Supreme Court from 1848-1853.  As an opponent of slavery Trumbull joined the Republican Party in 1854 and ran successfully against Abraham Lincoln to become a United States Senator from Illinois. Trumbull remained in the United States Senate until 1873 after which he resumed practice of law in Chicago. In 1880 he tried as a Democrat for Governor of Illinois but was unsuccessful.                        While in the United States Senate he favored new bills opposing black slavery, passing a bill ending slavery in District of Columbia, which was amended, allowing blacks to testify in federal court and supported a bill which forbade the use of the Union Army to return runaway slaves to their owners.  In 1864, Trumbull worked with another senator to create the Freedman’s Bureau to help blacks with housing and, later, education.  He also voted for the first reconstruction act that created a new voters list that included African Americans.   Trumbull’s most prominent legislative achievement was his proposal of the 13th Amendment originally written by Senator John Henderson.  The 13th Amendment amended the United States Constitution so that slavery and servitude was illegal and it gave Congress the power to enforce it.  Trumbull was also a leading supporter of the 1866 Civil Rights Bill that was designed to protect freed slaves form Southern Black Codes. Trumbull was one of seven Republicans who broke party ranks and voted against the conviction of President Johnson during his impeachment trial in the Senate. In 1872 he joined other Liberal Republicans in supporting Horace Greeley’s presidential candidacy against the reelection of President Grant. He married Julia Jayne (d. Aug. 16, 1868) in June of 1843 and they had four children. Julia Jayne served as a bridesmaid at Abraham and Mary Lincoln's wedding. His second marriage was to Mary Ingraham, on November 3, 1877, with whom he had two daughters, Alma and Mae. Only one son survived Trumbull in death.  He died June 25, 1896 in Chicago. (Ina Belle) Description An account of the resource William H. Herdman, a blacksmith and early resident of Mount Vernon, Illinois, was the son of Robert and Jane Hanson Herdman. He married Mary A. Kirby, the daughter of Moses and Lydia Williamson Kirby. Herdman moved to Mount Vernon from Pennsylvania in 1850. In 1865 his brother, Thomas, a Methodist Episcopal minister, came from Ohio to head the Methodist Seminary at Mount Vernon which closed down during the Civil War. He remained there for four years and then acted as minister for several different churches in the area. In 1890 he was elected president of McKendree College. He remained at the college in various positions for approximately ten years. William Hamilton and Mary had eight daughters including Ada I. Herdman, Ina B. Herdman, Florence V. Herdman, Ellen A. Herdman Gowenlock, Henrietta "Etta" Herdman Doud, Octavia L. Herdman Huff, and Grace Herdman Harris. Henrietta "Etta" Herdman married Menzer Fairchild Doud of St. Louis, Missouri, a newspaper writer for various papers in Kansas and Missouri. Their daughter, Grace, was a school teacher and served as chairman of the Missouri State Association of Childhood Education in 1939. Their oldest daughter, Ada, was also a schoolteacher and taught in the Mount Vernon area for many years. Henrietta Doud's youngest daughter, Virginia, provided many of the photo identifications on the photographs. Photographs in this collection include images of the Herdman family with a high number of images featuring the families of Henrietta Doud, Grace Harris, Ellen Gowenlock, and Octavia Huff.
