Title A name given to the resource Monticello College Collection Subject The topic of the resource Women's colleges Universities and colleges Monticello College Monticello Female Seminary Haskell, Harriet, 1835-1907 Illinois--Godfrey Godfrey, Benjamin, 1794-1862 Description An account of the resource Monticello College first began as the Monticello Female Seminary in 1838. Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.” Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.  On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years. The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972. The canal serves as a shipping link between the Great Lakes Waterway and the Missisippi River and it carries Chicago's sewage to the Des Plaines River.  Construction on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal began in 1889 with the creation of the Municipal Sanitary District in response to fears that sewage pumped into the Chicago River and into Lake Michigan would contaminate the city's drinking water. The canal also served as a replacement for the narrower and shallower Illinois and Michigan Canal. Canal construction ran under the leadership of chief engineer Isham Randolph from September 3, 1892, known as "Shovel Day," until January 2, 1900, when water was first released into the canal.  During the construction process, engineers successfully and permanently reversed the flow of the Chicago River, enabling it to carry waste water away to the Mississippi River and eventually the Gulf of Mexico. Admiral George Dewey dedicated the canal on May 2, 1900. Additional construction extending the canal to Joliet ran from 1903-1907.  Photographs in this collection include images of the construction of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal and the Bear Trap Dam at the base of the canal in Lockport, Illinois. The Federal Writers' Project provided employment opportunities for historians, teachers, writers, librarians, and other white-collar workers. Initially the project produced guidebooks entitled American Guide on several regions of the country with an emphasis on the the country's scenic, historical, cultural, and economic resources. The Illinois Writers' Project, the state office for the Federal Writers' Project, produced state-wide guidebooks as well as regional publications which included work by Richard Wright, Saul Bellow, Margaret Walker, and Louis "Studs" Terkel. The photographs contained in this collection include images of farm life in southern Illinois, Chicago architecture, Greek-American life in Chicago's Greektown, and historic buildings and architecture throughout the state. Title A name given to the resource Boch Family Collection Description An account of the resource The Boch family, headed by Stephen, Sr., a coal miner, and Maria "Mary" Prozniker Boch, were residents of Taylorville. Stephen and Maria immigrated from Austria with their two oldest children, Ferdinand and Agatha Boch Paul. After settling in Taylorville the Boch's had four sons, Max, Frederick S., Otto, and Frank. Stephen Boch, Sr. was an amateur photographer, a hobby shared with his son Frank. The University of Illinois at Springfield conducted an oral history interview with Frank and Frederick Boch in 1986.
