Smith was an Assistant State Entomologist (1906-1914) and orchardist (1914-1966) in Ozark, Illinois. He was active in the Ozark Missionary Baptist Church, Johnson County Farm Bureau, Fruit Belt Service Company, Federal Land Bank of St. Louis, Illinois Horticultural Society, and the Ozark Public School. He was instrumental in the development of the University of Illinois Extension Service experimental farms in Johnson County.  Smith married Grace Selby of Bartlett, Ohio on December 28, 1906. Together they operated a three hundred acre apple and peach orchard and raised a family of eight boys and two girls. Five of their sons serviced in the military during World War II, one of which died in New Guinea in 1944. Grace was active in the Ozark Missionary Baptist Church, girl’s 4-H, Tri-County Home Bureau, Ozark Home Bureau, Ozark District School Board and the P.T.A. (Parent Teacher Association). In 1952 she was proclaimed Mother of the Year by the Illinois Golden Rule Company. A daughter, Alice Elisabeth (Betty) Smith (1913-1973), graduated from the University of Illinois (B.S. degree in Home Economics) in 1937 and the University of Colorado (M.A. degree in Home Economics) in 1943; taught home economics in the Crete Public schools (1937-1943); served as a University Home Demonstration Agent (1943-1947), and worked as Assistant State Girls’ 4-H Club Leader with the University of Iowa at Ames (1947-1954). Betty completed a series of home economics overseas assignments through the Agency for International Development in the United States State Department that took her to the Philippines (1955-1957), Iran (1957-1961), Morocco (1962-1963), Nigeria (1963-1966), and Southern Vietnam (1967-1970). She returned to Iowa in 1970 to serve as Extension Home Economist and Head of the Extended Nutrition Program in Des Moines. Betty was in charge of Mrs. Patricia Nixon’s visit to the program on March 1, 1971. (Ephraim Samuel), 1824-1896 Description An account of the resource Nicholas Vachel Lindsay, a major American poet, was born in 1879 at 603 South Fifth Street in Springfield, Illinois to Dr. Vachel Thomas Lindsay and Catherine Frazee Lindsay. He graduated from Springfield High School and studied at Hiram College in Ohio, the Chicago Art Institute and the New York School of Art.  Lindsay made three famous walking tours of the United States in 1906, 1908 and 1912, covering more than 2,800 miles. On these treks, Lindsay traded poems for food and shelter, earning him the title “The Prairie Troubadour.”  Lindsay first earned fame with the publication of his poem “General William Booth Enters into Heaven” in 1913. Two years later his poem, “The Wedding of the Rose and the Lotus”, calling for tolerance between Eastern and Western cultures was printed by the United States Secretary of the Interior and sent to both houses of Congress in connection with the opening of the Panama Canal.  Much of Lindsay’s poetry was written to be read aloud, and he performed extensively across the country and in Europe. He often created drawings to go with his poems. He was a leading voice in the American “New Poetry” movement and published a total of 20 volumes of poetry and prose. He and other artists of his day championed a new language to express new subjects, such as civil liberties, civic excellence and humanitarian and aesthetic values. He also wrote poems of protest against spiritual and environmental blight. Lindsay’s Springfield home was his creative center, and he returned there many times during his career.  In 1925 he married Elizabeth Conner of Spokane, Washington. He returned to Springfield with his wife and two children in 1929, where he committed suicide on December 5, 1931. The Vachel Lindsay Association, a not-for-profit private corporation, was founded in 1946 in Springfield, Illinois “to perpetuate the spiritual and material estate of Nicholas Vachel Lindsay, the Poet”. The organization proposed to finance the collection and publication of various Lindsayana and to maintain and preserve the Lindsay Home as a site for perpetuating interest in Lindsay and his poetry and ideals. In 1990 the Lindsay Home was transferred to the state of Illinois and became a historic site open to the public. The Association continues to promote interest in Lindsay through various public programming and publishing endeavors. Elizabeth Graham, friend of Lindsay, was a founding member and curator of the Lindsay Home from 1958 to 1978. She attended elementary school in Mississippi (1916-1922) and high school and junior college in Chicago after her family moved to Illinois in 1923. She received her diploma from Provident Hospital School of Nursing in 1933 and degrees in Public Health Nursing from Loyola University (B.S. 1942) and in Administration and Supervision from the University of Chicago (M.S., 1954). Ms. Durham attended Tuskegee Nurse-Midwifery School in Alabama and did graduate coursework at Illinois Teachers College (1958-1965) and Roosevelt University (1965). Her forty-five year professional career included positions as staff and public health nurse, nursing school teacher/supervisor, consultant in maternal and child health and in personal and public service occupations, elementary/adult education teacher and librarian. She worked at such private and public organizations as nurse midwifery schools, Chicago Department of Health, U.S. Children’s Bureau, National League for Nursing, Illinois State Board of Vocational Education and Rehabilitation and the East Central Curriculum Management Center. Ms. Durham retired from the Illinois Office of Education in June 1978. She worked briefly on an educational research project at Eastern Illinois University, July 1978-June 1979. She was active in several community and religious organizations including: Senior Learners Program, Sangamon State University, American Nurses Association, NAACP, Springfield Urban League, Gray Panthers, Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation, and Project Area Agency on Aging. Keller represented southern Illinois as a member of the Illinois State Senate (1913-1917) where he advocated for old-age pensions, woman’s suffrage, pure food and drug laws, and the eight-hour day. He served five terms in the United States House of Representatives (1931-1941). While in Congress, he was a member of the liberal bloc that supported New Deal legislation; introduced railroad retirement pension legislation; sought relief aid for Southern Illinois and envisioned Crab Orchard Lake project on a grand scale. He unsuccessfully campaigned for re-election in ever election between 1940-1948 with the exception of 1946 when he was in Mexico as a special adviser to the United States Ambassador. Kent E. Henry's son, William, platted out the town and made land donations for churches, a school, and a city jail. William (1812-1899) and his wife, Mary Ann, had five children live to adulthood including George Wade Bacon Sadorus (1838-1911) and Henry Washington Sadorus (1840-1927). George served in the 125th Volunteers during the Civil War and then returned to work the family farm. George's son Frank was a photographer whose collection is now held by the Illinois State Museum.
