The Etter Family came to Illinois in 1826 with the arrival of Henry and Eliza Etter and their young family. Their son, Henry Etter, Jr., married Estereen Davidson and he worked on the family farm throughout his life. James Etter, the son of Henry and Estereen, was born in 1848. James worked on the family farm before moving to his own farm. He served as constable, road commissioner, township clerk and collector and assessor of the township of South Palmyra. He married Julia Richie in 1873 and had six children including Henry Ross Etter. Henry Ross Etter attended Drake College and worked as a teacher for four years. Beginning in 1903, Etter worked as an editor for the Weekly Transcript in Palmyra. Etter purchased the newspaper in 1909 and served as the publication's owner and publisher. Etter married Laura Thompson in 1905 and the couple had two children, Florence Evelyn and Lorton Dale. Ogilvie spent his career as a lawyer working in private practice and for the federal government including serving as a special assistant to the United States Attorney General. In 1961, Ogilvie was elected as sheriff for Cook County. Five years later he was elected as president of the Cook County Board of Commissioners.  Ogilvie won the 1968 Illinois governor's race and took office in Janury 1969. During his tenure, Ogilvie successfully fought for the introduction of a state income tax and launched the "New Illinois" program which promoted economic growth via revenue sharing. House of Representatives Photographers Description An account of the resource Samuel Alschuler, judge of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit (1915-1936), was born in Chicago, Illinois, on November 20, 1959 to Bavarian-born Jacob and Caroline Stiefel Alschuler. After growing up and attending school in Aurora, Alschuler began practicing law at the age of twenty-two in 1881 and starting in the 1890s, served as a public servant for the rest of his life. As a Democrat, Alschuler won a seat in the Illinois House of Representatives in 1896. He became the House Minority leader in 1898, a position he held until leaving the House of Representatives in 1900. Alschuler unsuccessfully ran for Illinois State Governor in both 1900 and 1912. In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson recognized Alschuler’s potential and appointed him to the U.S. Court of Appeals 7th Circuit. Alschuler served as arbitrator during the meat packing labor dispute of 1918. During the coal labor problems of 1922, President Warren Harding also asked him to serve on a coal fact-find commission. Alschuler, uncertain if he could properly be a member of the commission while serving on the federal bench, chose to serve unofficially as a legal advisor to the commission. In 1925, he became the presiding judge of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, a position he held for nine years, and retired in May 1936. Alschuler was a bachelor until 1923, when he married the daughter of the Chicago clothing manufacturer Ella Kahn. On November 10, 1939, Samuel Alschuler died, having no children. Judge Samuel Alschuler is related to the nineteenth century photographer, Samuel Alschuler. The photographer is best known for photographing Abraham Lincoln in Urbana, Illinois, in 1858 in which Lincoln wore Alschuler's black suit coat which was far too small for the political figure. Images taken by the photographer Samuel Alschuler are included in this collection. After growing up and attending school in Aurora, Alschuler began practicing law at the age of twenty-two in 1881 and starting in the 1890s, served as a public servant for the rest of his life. As a Democrat, Alschuler won a seat in the Illinois House of Representatives in 1896. He became the House Minority leader in 1898, a position he held until leaving the House of Representatives in 1900. Alschuler unsuccessfully ran for Illinois State Governor in both 1900 and 1912. In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson recognized Alschuler’s potential and appointed him to the U.S. Court of Appeals 7th Circuit. Alschuler served as arbitrator during the meat packing labor dispute of 1918. During the coal labor problems of 1922, President Warren Harding also asked him to serve on a coal fact-find commission. Alschuler, uncertain if he could properly be a member of the commission while serving on the federal bench, chose to serve unofficially as a legal advisor to the commission. In 1925, he became the presiding judge of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, a position he held for nine years, and retired in May 1936. Alschuler was a bachelor until 1923, when he married the daughter of the Chicago clothing manufacturer Ella Kahn. On November 10, 1939, Samuel Alschuler died, having no children. Judge Samuel Alschuler is related to the nineteenth century photographer, Samuel Alschuler. The photographer is best known for photographing Abraham Lincoln in Urbana, Illinois, in 1858 in which Lincoln wore Alschuler's black suit coat which was far too small for the political figure. I the winter from 61-62 they made a company up for the 62 Ills Inf and Wilson the 2 Lieutenant came to me and told me I would get 66 Dollars backpay if I would enlist I would not have to stay any longer then six months and we would never leave the state my mother told me I should not go but he came daily till I went and so I got to be a soldier as a boy 15 years old. When we came to Camp Dubois Captain Overmire would not have me for a soldier but took me for his waiter I was never examined by the Doktor or musterd in like the rest but still he put my Name down <hr /> in the book and I drew my pay like a private soldier. I never had a musket I only stood guard one night in other mans place and I got the ague right away after that and had it as long as I was with the regiment On the 20 Dez. 62 I was taken prisoner at Holly Springs and was send to St Louis where I had the Lung fever once and once the measles that made me sick of the soldier life I left St Louis the 13 of April 63. It was not cowardice what made me desert but because I was sick all the time there was a young man 20 years of age in our Company at St Louis and he paid 50 Dollars and got free but they did not care anything for the dutchman whether he died or not! I can swear to all I said, that I went against my mothers will (and so forth) my Captains put me down as 18 years old but <hr /> the fact is he never asked me how old I was and if you write to the regiment you will be told the same and I can swear to it that I did not understand one word what was said when I was sworn in. Now do give me free so I can go and see my relations and mother again it was only a youthfull fault and I do not think I ought to be punished for it all my life time for God Knows I did not Know where to go to when I enlisted. May Dear Sir In answer to your enquiry about the exicution of the Lincoln Conspirators I will say I build the Gallows and conducted the exicution of Mrs Surratt Payne, Herold & Azerott. in person All were hanged on the same Gallows and at the same time.
