Stevens was a lawyer, banker, newspaper editor and writer based in Illinois. Stevens was born and educated in Dixon, Illinois. He studied law in Sycamore, Illinois, and was admitted to the bar in 1877. Shortly after that he moved to South Dakota where he operated the Beadle County National Bank until 1890 when he moved to Chicago and worked in a brokerage business. In 1907 Stevens returned to Sycamore, Illinois, where he published the Dixon Weekly Citizen and later the Sycamore Tribune. He retired from the newspaper business in 1928 and was elected mayor of Sycamore in 1931. Governor Henry Horner appointed Stevens to the War Records Division of the office of the Adjutant General. Stevens was a historian who authored several historical works including The Black Hawk War. Stevens used the majority of the items in the collection while researching and writing The Black Hawk War. The Black Hawk War (1832), although brief, has much significance for Native American history. In April, tribal groups of Sauk, Meskwakis, and Kickapoo, led by Chief Black Hawk of the Sauk, crossed the Mississippi River from Iowa into Illinois. Known as the British Band, they claimed lands under the 1804 Treaty of St. Louis, a treaty the whites disputed. Fearful, militia’s fired on the Native American delegation in what led to the Battle of Stillman’s Run, a resounding defeat for the militias. Black Hawk was eventually defeat, however, at the battles of Wisconsin Heights and Bad Axe. Historically, the Black Hawk War legitimized and strengthened forcible relocation of Native American tribes further west. The finding aid for the Frank E. Two years later his poem, “The Wedding of the Rose and the Lotus”, calling for tolerance between Eastern and Western cultures was printed by the United States Secretary of the Interior and sent to both houses of Congress in connection with the opening of the Panama Canal.  Much of Lindsay’s poetry was written to be read aloud, and he performed extensively across the country and in Europe. He often created drawings to go with his poems. He was a leading voice in the American “New Poetry” movement and published a total of 20 volumes of poetry and prose. He returned to Springfield with his wife and two children in 1929, where he committed suicide on December 5, 1931. The Vachel Lindsay Association, a not-for-profit private corporation, was founded in 1946 in Springfield, Illinois “to perpetuate the spiritual and material estate of Nicholas Vachel Lindsay, the Poet”. The organization proposed to finance the collection and publication of various Lindsayana and to maintain and preserve the Lindsay Home as a site for perpetuating interest in Lindsay and his poetry and ideals. In 1990 the Lindsay Home was transferred to the state of Illinois and became a historic site open to the public. The Association continues to promote interest in Lindsay through various public programming and publishing endeavors. Office of Lieutenant Governor Lieutenant governors Description An account of the resource John Gillett Oglesby was the third child born to Illinois Governor Richard Oglesby and, his second wife, Emma Gillett Keays Oglesby.  He was born in Decatur, Illinois and attended Harvard for two years until war was threatened with Spain.  He left school and joined the military, serving as Captain of Troop K, First Illinois Cavalry and continued in the militia after the war to obtain the rank of colonel.  He served as private secretary to Governor Richard Yates, Jr. (1901-1904), member of the Illinois House of Representatives (1905-1908) and was elected lieutenant governor in 1908 and again in 1916.  He continued to be active in Republican politics until 1936. Robert, a Presbyterian minister and professor of languages at Transylvania University, married Hannah Todd, the aunt of Mary Todd Lincoln and Elizabeth Edwards. Robert and Hannah's son, John Todd Stuart, came to Illinois in 1828 after studying the law and immediately set up practice in Springfield. He fought in the Black Hawk War as a major in the battalion in which Abraham Lincoln had commanded a company. He served in the House of Representative from 1832-1836 serving with Lincoln. When Lincoln passed the bar, he practiced with Stuart until 1841. Stuart was elected to Congress, in 1838 defeating Stephen A. Douglas. After serving two terms, he went back into practice with Benjamin Edwards, but was then elected to the U.S. Senate in 1848, serving one term from 1848-1852. After being elected to the U.S. House in 1862 and serving one term, he returned to the practice of law with Edwards. In 1858, his son-in-law, Christopher C. Brown joined the firm. John T. Stuart also served as president of the Springfield City Railway Company, president of the Springfield Watch Company, president of the Betty Stuart Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the National Lincoln Monument Association.  Stuart married Mary Virginia Nash of Jacksonville, Illinois on October 25, 1837. They had seven children: Elizabeth (Bettie), John Todd, Virginia, Frank, Robert, Hannah and Edwards. Bettie married Christopher C. Brown, a lawyer. After John T. Stuart’s death on November 28, 1885, Brown continued the law firm, eventually bringing his son, Stuart, into the practice. John Todd and Mary Virginia's son, John Todd Stuart, married Emily Webster Huntington. Their daughter, Mary Virginia Stuart married George Ketchum Hall and their children included George Stuart, Henry Huntington, and Archibald Stuart. (Ephraim Samuel), 1824-1896 Description An account of the resource Nicholas Vachel Lindsay, a major American poet, was born in 1879 at 603 South Fifth Street in Springfield, Illinois to Dr. Vachel Thomas Lindsay and Catherine Frazee Lindsay. He graduated from Springfield High School and studied at Hiram College in Ohio, the Chicago Art Institute and the New York School of Art.  Lindsay made three famous walking tours of the United States in 1906, 1908 and 1912, covering more than 2,800 miles. On these treks, Lindsay traded poems for food and shelter, earning him the title “The Prairie Troubadour.”  Lindsay first earned fame with the publication of his poem “General William Booth Enters into Heaven” in 1913. Two years later his poem, “The Wedding of the Rose and the Lotus”, calling for tolerance between Eastern and Western cultures was printed by the United States Secretary of the Interior and sent to both houses of Congress in connection with the opening of the Panama Canal.  Much of Lindsay’s poetry was written to be read aloud, and he performed extensively across the country and in Europe. He often created drawings to go with his poems. He was a leading voice in the American “New Poetry” movement and published a total of 20 volumes of poetry and prose. He and other artists of his day championed a new language to express new subjects, such as civil liberties, civic excellence and humanitarian and aesthetic values. He also wrote poems of protest against spiritual and environmental blight. Lindsay’s Springfield home was his creative center, and he returned there many times during his career.  In 1925 he married Elizabeth Conner of Spokane, Washington. He returned to Springfield with his wife and two children in 1929, where he committed suicide on December 5, 1931. The Vachel Lindsay Association, a not-for-profit private corporation, was founded in 1946 in Springfield, Illinois “to perpetuate the spiritual and material estate of Nicholas Vachel Lindsay, the Poet”. The organization proposed to finance the collection and publication of various Lindsayana and to maintain and preserve the Lindsay Home as a site for perpetuating interest in Lindsay and his poetry and ideals. In 1990 the Lindsay Home was transferred to the state of Illinois and became a historic site open to the public. The Association continues to promote interest in Lindsay through various public programming and publishing endeavors. Elizabeth Graham, friend of Lindsay, was a founding member and curator of the Lindsay Home from 1958 to 1978. (Ephraim Samuel), 1824-1896 Description An account of the resource Nicholas Vachel Lindsay, a major American poet, was born in 1879 at 603 South Fifth Street in Springfield, Illinois to Dr. Vachel Thomas Lindsay and Catherine Frazee Lindsay. He graduated from Springfield High School and studied at Hiram College in Ohio, the Chicago Art Institute and the New York School of Art.  Lindsay made three famous walking tours of the United States in 1906, 1908 and 1912, covering more than 2,800 miles. On these treks, Lindsay traded poems for food and shelter, earning him the title “The Prairie Troubadour.”  Lindsay first earned fame with the publication of his poem “General William Booth Enters into Heaven” in 1913. Two years later his poem, “The Wedding of the Rose and the Lotus”, calling for tolerance between Eastern and Western cultures was printed by the United States Secretary of the Interior and sent to both houses of Congress in connection with the opening of the Panama Canal.  Much of Lindsay’s poetry was written to be read aloud, and he performed extensively across the country and in Europe. He often created drawings to go with his poems. He was a leading voice in the American “New Poetry” movement and published a total of 20 volumes of poetry and prose. He and other artists of his day championed a new language to express new subjects, such as civil liberties, civic excellence and humanitarian and aesthetic values. He also wrote poems of protest against spiritual and environmental blight. Lindsay’s Springfield home was his creative center, and he returned there many times during his career.  In 1925 he married Elizabeth Conner of Spokane, Washington. He returned to Springfield with his wife and two children in 1929, where he committed suicide on December 5, 1931. She worked at such private and public organizations as nurse midwifery schools, Chicago Department of Health, U.S. Children’s Bureau, National League for Nursing, Illinois State Board of Vocational Education and Rehabilitation and the East Central Curriculum Management Center. Ms. Durham retired from the Illinois Office of Education in June 1978. She worked briefly on an educational research project at Eastern Illinois University, July 1978-June 1979. She was active in several community and religious organizations including: Senior Learners Program, Sangamon State University, American Nurses Association, NAACP, Springfield Urban League, Gray Panthers, Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation, and Project Area Agency on Aging. Divorced with no children, Durham died March 22, 1995. Photographs in this collection include images of African American nurses at work, family photographs, and portraits.
