The canal serves as a shipping link between the Great Lakes Waterway and the Missisippi River and it carries Chicago's sewage to the Des Plaines River.  Construction on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal began in 1889 with the creation of the Municipal Sanitary District in response to fears that sewage pumped into the Chicago River and into Lake Michigan would contaminate the city's drinking water. The canal also served as a replacement for the narrower and shallower Illinois and Michigan Canal. Canal construction ran under the leadership of chief engineer Isham Randolph from September 3, 1892, known as "Shovel Day," until January 2, 1900, when water was first released into the canal.  During the construction process, engineers successfully and permanently reversed the flow of the Chicago River, enabling it to carry waste water away to the Mississippi River and eventually the Gulf of Mexico. Admiral George Dewey dedicated the canal on May 2, 1900. Additional construction extending the canal to Joliet ran from 1903-1907.  Photographs in this collection include images of the construction of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal and the Bear Trap Dam at the base of the canal in Lockport, Illinois. Office of Lieutenant Governor Editor Hoffmann, Julius Carl, 1848-1935 Bankers Description An account of the resource Francis Arnold Hoffmann was born in Hereford, Westphalia, Prussia, and came to the United States to escape conscription. Hoffmann settled in Chicago in 1839 where he studied for the ministry and was put in charge of the Lutherans in northeastern Illinois serving as pastor in Dunklee's Grove until 1847. In 1847 Hoffmann was named pastor of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Schaumberg. Four years later, he quit the ministry and moved into Chicago where he studied law and engaged in real estate and the insurance business. He was named to the Chicago City Council in 1852, serving through 1860. Hoffmann established a bank in 1854 which failed during the Civil War. Hoffmann was appointed consul for several German states and he was the first editor of the German newspaper, Illinois Staats Zeitung. He was one of the organizers of the Republican Party in Illinois and in 1860 was elected Lieutenant Governor of the state. Hoffmann established the International Bank at Chicago in 1866 and was active in restoring banks and businesses after the Chicago fire in 1871. When he retired in 1875 he became editor of a German farm paper in Milwaukee called Der Haus und Bauernfreund; Die Deutsche Warte of Chicago and the Deutsches Wolksblatt of Buffalo. The canal serves as a shipping link between the Great Lakes Waterway and the Missisippi River and it carries Chicago's sewage to the Des Plaines River.  Construction on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal began in 1889 with the creation of the Municipal Sanitary District in response to fears that sewage pumped into the Chicago River and into Lake Michigan would contaminate the city's drinking water. The canal also served as a replacement for the narrower and shallower Illinois and Michigan Canal. Canal construction ran under the leadership of chief engineer Isham Randolph from September 3, 1892, known as "Shovel Day," until January 2, 1900, when water was first released into the canal.  During the construction process, engineers successfully and permanently reversed the flow of the Chicago River, enabling it to carry waste water away to the Mississippi River and eventually the Gulf of Mexico. Admiral George Dewey dedicated the canal on May 2, 1900. Comdg received the letter & endorsed from the War Department referring my case to him my health is not very good & had the refusal of a discharge. I think I can hold out until next August. Henry's son, William, platted out the town and made land donations for churches, a school, and a city jail. Title A name given to the resource Albert Louis Loud Collection Subject The topic of the resource Loud, Albert Louis, 1886-1940 Vaniman, Chester Melvin, 1866-1912 Airship Aeronautics Description An account of the resource Albert Louis Loud was born in Virden, Illinois, in 1886. He began his career as an engineer accompanying his brother in law, photographer and engineer Melvin Vaniman, on Walter Wellman's third unsuccessful attempt to reach the North Pole by dirigible in 1909. The Wellman-owned dirigible, America, ended its flight after two hours when the ship lost the ability to stabilize and maintain altitude. In October 1910, Loud again accompanied Vaniman as an assistant engineer on the America during an unsuccessful attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The crossing failed after 38 hours in flight after which the Royal Mail steamship Trent rescued the crew. Loud continued to work with Vaniman on a second attempt at the crossing on the airship Akron, but retired before the voyage in 1912 which ended when the airship exploded shortly after take off killing all aboard. After his retirement, Loud moved to Danville Illinois and worked as an auditor for Fidelity Loan Company and as a salesman for a printing company.
