Keller began his working career as a school teacher and principal in Ava, Illinois, before becoming a lawyer and eventually working in the mining industry in the western United States and Mexico. Keller represented southern Illinois as a member of the Illinois State Senate (1913-1917) where he advocated for old-age pensions, woman’s suffrage, pure food and drug laws, and the eight-hour day. He served five terms in the United States House of Representatives (1931-1941). While in Congress, he was a member of the liberal bloc that supported New Deal legislation; introduced railroad retirement pension legislation; sought relief aid for Southern Illinois and envisioned Crab Orchard Lake project on a grand scale. He unsuccessfully campaigned for re-election in ever election between 1940-1948 with the exception of 1946 when he was in Mexico as a special adviser to the United States Ambassador. Kent E. House of Representatives Description An account of the resource The Buckmaster-Curran Collection features early Illinois families descended from Colonel John Durkee of Norwich, Connecticut, who fought in the Revolutionary War. His daughter Anna Durkee first married Dr. Dominic Tauzin, with whom she had a daughter, Mary Harriott Tauzin. Mary Tauzin married Daniel Bartling, a lieutenant in the War of 1812. Mary died in 1809 and Anna was responsible for the care of her two grandchildren, Henry and Harriet. In 1817 she, along with the children, came to Illinois and settled in Madison County. In 1832 Harriet Bartling married Nathaniel Buckmaster, a brick maker by trade, who had first come to Illinois in 1817. He served as a state representative in 1820-1822, and again, 1834-1836. He was elected Madison County sheriff in 1821 and served several consecutive terms. He was appointed Colonel in the Illinois militia in 1828 and commanded a battalion in the Black Hawk War. He was postmaster at Alton, 1838-1841 and warden at the Illinois State Penitentiary, 1842-1846. Buckmaster owned property in Madison County and operated the Madison County Ferry across the Mississippi. Nathaniel and Harriet Buckmasters’s daughter, Catherine Buckmaster married Isaac Bush Curran, Sr.. Curran was born in Ithaca, New York, and worked as a jeweler when he came to Illinois in 1840. He was active in Democratic politics and was appointed Pension Agent for Illinois by President Buchanan from 1853-1858. He was private secretary and chief of staff for Governor Joel Matteson. Catherine and Isaac had two sons, Isaac B. Title A name given to the resource Adolph Berger Collection Subject The topic of the resource Berger, Adolph, 1820-1912 Physicians Illinois--Lebanon German Americans Description An account of the resource Adolph Berger, a German physician who practiced medicine in Lebanon, Illinois, was born about 1820 and educated at Heidelberg, Germany. While a student, he became attracted to the 1848 revolutionary movement. Following the failure of the revolutions in Germany, a number of political refugees – “Forty-eighters” – emigrated to the United States. Frederich Hecker, one of the refugees who had been a hero of the German revolution, had settled in the Belleville, Illinois, area. His presence attracted a number of young Germans to the Belleville-Lebanon area. Berger arrived in Lebanon in 1848 and began his medical practice on June 13, 1850. He continued to practice medicine in the same locality for the next fifty-three years. Berger was active in civic affairs. He was a member of the St. Clair County Medical Society, Lebanon Chapter No. 62 of the Royal Arch Masons, Lebanon Town Board, Lebanon Board of Education, and a committee that coordinated the financing of the Mascoutah and Lebanon Railroad. Berger also supported the Lebanon public library and the local German singing societies. Like many of the 1848 German immigrants, he resisted the temperance and prohibition movement. Berger belonged to the Presbyterian Church. Title A name given to the resource Lindley Smith Collection Subject The topic of the resource Families Smith, Lindley, M., 1881-1966 Smith, Grace Selby, 1882-1967 Description An account of the resource Lindley M. Smith was an Assistant State Entomologist (1906-1914) and orchardist (1914-1966) in Ozark, Illinois. He was active in the Ozark Missionary Baptist Church, Johnson County Farm Bureau, Fruit Belt Service Company, Federal Land Bank of St. Louis, Illinois Horticultural Society, and the Ozark Public School. He was instrumental in the development of the University of Illinois Extension Service experimental farms in Johnson County.  Smith married Grace Selby of Bartlett, Ohio on December 28, 1906. Together they operated a three hundred acre apple and peach orchard and raised a family of eight boys and two girls. Five of their sons serviced in the military during World War II, one of which died in New Guinea in 1944. Grace was active in the Ozark Missionary Baptist Church, girl’s 4-H, Tri-County Home Bureau, Ozark Home Bureau, Ozark District School Board and the P.T.A. (Parent Teacher Association). In 1952 she was proclaimed Mother of the Year by the Illinois Golden Rule Company. A daughter, Alice Elisabeth (Betty) Smith (1913-1973), graduated from the University of Illinois (B.S. degree in Home Economics) in 1937 and the University of Colorado (M.A. degree in Home Economics) in 1943; taught home economics in the Crete Public schools (1937-1943); served as a University Home Demonstration Agent (1943-1947), and worked as Assistant State Girls’ 4-H Club Leader with the University of Iowa at Ames (1947-1954). Betty completed a series of home economics overseas assignments through the Agency for International Development in the United States State Department that took her to the Philippines (1955-1957), Iran (1957-1961), Morocco (1962-1963), Nigeria (1963-1966), and Southern Vietnam (1967-1970). She returned to Iowa in 1970 to serve as Extension Home Economist and Head of the Extended Nutrition Program in Des Moines. Betty was in charge of Mrs. Patricia Nixon’s visit to the program on March 1, 1971. Title A name given to the resource Monticello College Collection Subject The topic of the resource Women's colleges Universities and colleges Monticello College Monticello Female Seminary Haskell, Harriet, 1835-1907 Illinois--Godfrey Godfrey, Benjamin, 1794-1862 Description An account of the resource Monticello College first began as the Monticello Female Seminary in 1838. Founded by Captain Benjamin Godfrey to provide education for women, the school offered two years of classes for attendees based on the idea that “if you educate a man you educate an individual; educate a woman and you educate a whole family.” Godfrey selected Reverend Theron Baldwin to serve as the first head of the Monticello Female Seminary. In 1867 Harriet Haskell became principal, a position she held until her death in 1907.  On November 4, 1888, a fire broke out in the building and consumed the entire structure. Ms. Haskell and the school's Board of Trustees successfully fundraised for a new building and rebuilt the school in two years. The school's leadership made the decision to close the school in 1970 with the final class graduating in 1971. Lewis and Clark Community College completed the purchase of the Monticello College campus in 1972.
