In 1837 he moved to Belleville, Illinois, and won election to the state legislature as a Democrat in 1840.  Trumbull was appointed Secretary of State from 1841-1842 and later a justice of the State Supreme Court from 1848-1853.  As an opponent of slavery Trumbull joined the Republican Party in 1854 and ran successfully against Abraham Lincoln to become a United States Senator from Illinois. Trumbull remained in the United States Senate until 1873 after which he resumed practice of law in Chicago. In 1880 he tried as a Democrat for Governor of Illinois but was unsuccessful.                        While in the United States Senate he favored new bills opposing black slavery, passing a bill ending slavery in District of Columbia, which was amended, allowing blacks to testify in federal court and supported a bill which forbade the use of the Union Army to return runaway slaves to their owners.  In 1864, Trumbull worked with another senator to create the Freedman’s Bureau to help blacks with housing and, later, education.  He also voted for the first reconstruction act that created a new voters list that included African Americans.   Trumbull’s most prominent legislative achievement was his proposal of the 13th Amendment originally written by Senator John Henderson.  The 13th Amendment amended the United States Constitution so that slavery and servitude was illegal and it gave Congress the power to enforce it.  Trumbull was also a leading supporter of the 1866 Civil Rights Bill that was designed to protect freed slaves form Southern Black Codes. Trumbull was one of seven Republicans who broke party ranks and voted against the conviction of President Johnson during his impeachment trial in the Senate. In 1872 he joined other Liberal Republicans in supporting Horace Greeley’s presidential candidacy against the reelection of President Grant. He married Julia Jayne (d. Aug. 16, 1868) in June of 1843 and they had four children. Julia Jayne served as a bridesmaid at Abraham and Mary Lincoln's wedding. His second marriage was to Mary Ingraham, on November 3, 1877, with whom he had two daughters, Alma and Mae. Only one son survived Trumbull in death.  He died June 25, 1896 in Chicago. Two years later his poem, “The Wedding of the Rose and the Lotus”, calling for tolerance between Eastern and Western cultures was printed by the United States Secretary of the Interior and sent to both houses of Congress in connection with the opening of the Panama Canal.  Much of Lindsay’s poetry was written to be read aloud, and he performed extensively across the country and in Europe. He often created drawings to go with his poems. He was a leading voice in the American “New Poetry” movement and published a total of 20 volumes of poetry and prose. He and other artists of his day championed a new language to express new subjects, such as civil liberties, civic excellence and humanitarian and aesthetic values. He also wrote poems of protest against spiritual and environmental blight. Lindsay’s Springfield home was his creative center, and he returned there many times during his career.  In 1925 he married Elizabeth Conner of Spokane, Washington. He returned to Springfield with his wife and two children in 1929, where he committed suicide on December 5, 1931. The Vachel Lindsay Association, a not-for-profit private corporation, was founded in 1946 in Springfield, Illinois “to perpetuate the spiritual and material estate of Nicholas Vachel Lindsay, the Poet”. The organization proposed to finance the collection and publication of various Lindsayana and to maintain and preserve the Lindsay Home as a site for perpetuating interest in Lindsay and his poetry and ideals. In 1990 the Lindsay Home was transferred to the state of Illinois and became a historic site open to the public. The Association continues to promote interest in Lindsay through various public programming and publishing endeavors. Henry's son, William, platted out the town and made land donations for churches, a school, and a city jail. William (1812-1899) and his wife, Mary Ann, had five children live to adulthood including George Wade Bacon Sadorus (1838-1911) and Henry Washington Sadorus (1840-1927). George served in the 125th Volunteers during the Civil War and then returned to work the family farm. George's son Frank was a photographer whose collection is now held by the Illinois State Museum. On these treks, Lindsay traded poems for food and shelter, earning him the title “The Prairie Troubadour.”  Lindsay first earned fame with the publication of his poem “General William Booth Enters into Heaven” in 1913. Two years later his poem, “The Wedding of the Rose and the Lotus”, calling for tolerance between Eastern and Western cultures was printed by the United States Secretary of the Interior and sent to both houses of Congress in connection with the opening of the Panama Canal.  Much of Lindsay’s poetry was written to be read aloud, and he performed extensively across the country and in Europe. He often created drawings to go with his poems. He was a leading voice in the American “New Poetry” movement and published a total of 20 volumes of poetry and prose. He and other artists of his day championed a new language to express new subjects, such as civil liberties, civic excellence and humanitarian and aesthetic values. He also wrote poems of protest against spiritual and environmental blight. Lindsay’s Springfield home was his creative center, and he returned there many times during his career.  In 1925 he married Elizabeth Conner of Spokane, Washington. He returned to Springfield with his wife and two children in 1929, where he committed suicide on December 5, 1931. The Vachel Lindsay Association, a not-for-profit private corporation, was founded in 1946 in Springfield, Illinois “to perpetuate the spiritual and material estate of Nicholas Vachel Lindsay, the Poet”. The organization proposed to finance the collection and publication of various Lindsayana and to maintain and preserve the Lindsay Home as a site for perpetuating interest in Lindsay and his poetry and ideals. In 1990 the Lindsay Home was transferred to the state of Illinois and became a historic site open to the public. The Association continues to promote interest in Lindsay through various public programming and publishing endeavors. Elizabeth Graham, friend of Lindsay, was a founding member and curator of the Lindsay Home from 1958 to 1978. Deneen Collection Description An account of the resource Charles Samuel Deneen (Republican) served as a one-term member of the Illinois House of Representatives beginning in 1892. He was born in Edwardsville, Illinois, and grew up in Lebanon, Illinois, where his parents were among the founders of McKendree College. Deneen graduated from McKendree College and then attended Union College of Law (now known as Northwestern University Law School). He served as an attorney for the Chicago Sanitary District from 1895-1896 and State’s Attorney for Cook County from 1896-1904. The Etter Family came to Illinois in 1826 with the arrival of Henry and Eliza Etter and their young family. Their son, Henry Etter, Jr., married Estereen Davidson and he worked on the family farm throughout his life. James Etter, the son of Henry and Estereen, was born in 1848. James worked on the family farm before moving to his own farm. He served as constable, road commissioner, township clerk and collector and assessor of the township of South Palmyra. He married Julia Richie in 1873 and had six children including Henry Ross Etter. Henry Ross Etter attended Drake College and worked as a teacher for four years. Beginning in 1903, Etter worked as an editor for the Weekly Transcript in Palmyra. Etter purchased the newspaper in 1909 and served as the publication's owner and publisher. Etter married Laura Thompson in 1905 and the couple had two children, Florence Evelyn and Lorton Dale. Vernon, 1894-1972 Description An account of the resource The Janotta Family Collection contains photographs relating to conductor/composer Alfredo Jannotta, his wife, activist and author Stella Skiff Jannotta, and their family. Several photographs belonged to their son, Navy Rear Admiral A. Vernon Jannotta. Alfredo Jannotta immigrated from Italy by way of London to Boston in 1865 where he taught voice at the New England Conservatory of Music. He married his first wife, Alice Prudy and they had a son, Edward, before Alfredo moved to Cincinnati in 1868. Alfredo spent 12 years in Cincinnati teaching vocal performance as well as conducting the Cincinnati Choral Society and organizing the first Cincinnati orchestra. He moved back to Boston in 1881 but moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1882 and finally to Chicago in 1888 where he established himself as a vocal teacher. While teaching in Chicago, Jannotta taught vocal lessons to Stella Skiff whom he married in 1893. Skiff was the daughter of Iowa businessman Vernon William Skiff and his wife, Mary Frances Coffin. Her brother, Frank Vernon Skiff founded the Jewel Tea Company which later grew into a national grocery store chain including Jewel, Osco, Eisner, and White Hen. Skiff continued her singing career after marrying Jannotta and briefly taught lessons. Between 1894 and 1898, she gave birth to sons A. Vernon, Francis, and Joseph. Between 1917 and 1918, Stella adopted three foster daughters, Margaret, Marion, and Betty (Elizabeth). In the early 20th century she began taking an active interest in causes including the suffrage movement and socialism. Stella Jannotta joined the Chicago Political Equality League (predecessor to the Chicago League of Women Voters) in 1907. She wrote for the propaganda arm of the organization, including a 1916 article entitled "Public Opinion" which she revisted several times over the following decades. A. Vernon Jannotta, the oldest son on Alfredo and Stella, served in the United States Navy in both World War I and World War II. He rose through the ranks of the Navy and the Naval Reserves, eventually retiring as a Rear Admiral in 1954. Jannotta received several military honors including the Navy Cross, Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and a Purple Heart.  Jannotta began working at the Jewel Tea Company in 1919 and held several positions at the company for the next 50 years. He also held several executive positions or held stakes in several companies including Lehman Brothers, Motor Institute of America, Tapp, Inc. and Consolidated Trading Corporation.
