Was detailed on recruiting service aug, 1862. had verbal orders from Capt Philips and Lieut Savage. that were said to come from Col Morrison who was then Supt of recruiting service. to encourage enlistment and to enlist men for the unexpired time of the Reg. all men so enlisting would receive $100 bounty. 25 in advance and to be mustered out when the Regiments were, at the time there was better enducements for some to go in new Regiments and take a large county bounty then offered But some men thought that the difference of time to serve by going in an old regiment would be an offsett against the bounty then offered by the state and counties. I had orders from my superiors officers then to enlist men on such conditions, now these men claim that they should be mustered out this 11th oct. as they were deprived the privilege of reenlisting as veterans last winter. if they cannot be mustered out they claim they can make a false enlistment. their papers were made out like all others for three years for we could not and there was no orders to enlist men for less than the above time, only to enlist them as recruits and to be mustered out with the regiments

<text>Samuel Alschuler, judge of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit (1915-1936), was born in Chicago, Illinois, on November 20, 1959 to Bavarian-born Jacob and Caroline Stiefel Alschuler. After growing up and attending school in Aurora, Alschuler began practicing law at the age of twenty-two in 1881 and starting in the 1890s, served as a public servant for the rest of his life. As a Democrat, Alschuler won a seat in the Illinois House of Representatives in 1896. He became the House Minority leader in 1898, a position he held until leaving the House of Representatives in 1900. Alschuler unsuccessfully ran for Illinois State Governor in both 1900 and 1912. In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson recognized Alschuler’s potential and appointed him to the U.S. Court of Appeals 7th Circuit. Alschuler served as arbitrator during the meat packing labor dispute of 1918. During the coal labor problems of 1922, President Warren Harding also asked him to serve on a coal fact-find commission. Alschuler, uncertain if he could properly be a member of the commission while serving on the federal bench, chose to serve unofficially as a legal advisor to the commission. In 1925, he became the presiding judge of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, a position he held for nine years, and retired in May 1936. Alschuler was a bachelor until 1923, when he married the daughter of the Chicago clothing manufacturer Ella Kahn. On November 10, 1939, Samuel Alschuler died, having no children.

Judge Samuel Alschuler is related to the nineteenth century photographer, Samuel Alschuler. The photographer is best known for photographing Abraham Lincoln in Urbana, Illinois, in 1858 in which Lincoln wore Alschuler's black suit coat which was far too small for the political figure. Images taken by the photographer Samuel Alschuler are included in this collection.

The finding aid for the Samuel Alschuler Papers, 1890-1940 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at: http://alplm-cdi.com/chroniclingillinois/items/show/23.

This collection features photographs relating to Samuel Alschuler and his family, including unidentified family members and scenes from Chile. </text>

                    <text>
Mt. Morris, Apl. 23/63

Hond Sir:

I have just recd a note from Capt. McMaster of Mo. Vols. 31st Regt, who has recently returned from a rebel prison. He requests me to urge you to use your influence to have the exchange of prisoners hastened.

He comes from Jackson, Miss. where (in prison) he became acquainted with my brother-in-law Lieut Jos. E. Witt, 4th Ills. Cavalry, who with other brave officers is pining in squalor & starvation, amid filth & vermin too horrible to reflect upon with any thing like patience, when it is known they have suffered this since Jany. last. The Capt.

thinks humanity calls for prompter action on the part of the Govt., & I must say the Capt. is not alone in this opinion.

Knowing your interest in all who act and suffer for our common country, I take this liberty, hoping you may be able to urge forward the exchange of these suffering & abused officers. It was arranged with Genl Leery when he was paroled, that Lieut Witt & companions should be sent back in return for the kindness thus shown by the 4th Ill. Cavalry to the Genl. & his fellow prisoners; but alas! they are still in prison, starving, rotting, dying!

Possibly, you can do nothing, and I am troubling you unnecessarily, but still, my action is prompted by a feeling that needs no excusing - a feeling that the brave soldier should not be neglected a single hour by his Govt., nor by his fellow citizens.

Yours Respy.

D. J. Pinckney

D J Pinkney

Mt Morris April 23rd 1863.

Urges the Governor to use his influence to have the exchange of prisoners hastened - says his brother in law Lieut Witt of the 4th Ill Cavalry is now in prison at Jackson Miss. with many other brave officers who are starving among filth and vermin too horrible to think of.

thinks humanity calls for prompter action on the part of the Govt., & I must say the Capt. is not alone in this opinion.

Urges the Governor to use his influence to have the exchange of prisoners hastened - says his brother in law Lieut Witt of the 4th Ill Cavalry is now in prison at Jackson Miss. with many other brave officers who are starving among filth and vermin too horrible to think of.

Your very kind letter of the 20th inst has just been reach -- and for which I am more than obliged to you

The reason that I did not make aplication to my Member in congress is that He is a Coperhead --(S. S. Marshall as the members always have been from this region -- hence I could never expect acomodations from that quarter of any kind. hope and expect that it will be

diferant some day not vary far in the future -- but untill that Good Time comes I am entirley dependant upon you yet I hope I shal not be under

the [mediocraty?] of boring you vary oftin or long for the reasons above stated.

We are making big arrangements for a Grand Celabration of the fourth of July next and a barbucu for our returned Souldiers as you will perhaps Recolect the 111th Col Martin is nearly all from this county and we represent many others also 15 return from this regeon by the fourth and we are geting up a Celabration on a Grand Scale and we wish to turn it to a political Acount and will try and get other ajacent counties to join us in the celabration and as the people of this regeon was disapointed in geting to hear you last fall they are exceedingly anctious to have you come

and address them on that ocasion and I know that no other man could elicit the attention and respect of the Souldier Troops as your self. and I do hope that you will make it a point to be with us at that time

You have but litle [illegible] of the effect that a speech from you would have at that time hence I do hope you will write me on the receipt of this saying that you will be with us on the fourth We will get large posters struck at once and circulate them all through Southern Illinois and such a crowd as we would have never was seen before in Eqypt

Enclosed I send you the minutes of a meeting of the [Lincolns?] Souldiers and Sosiety

that you may see that they are in earnest in this matter

Hoping that I shal hear a favorable response to the above

I have the honor to be your friend

D. K. Green
