Governor of Illinois,

Dear Sir,

I have thought it probable that you would cause the entire Militia of this State to be organised preparatory to making a Draft, defending our homes & firesides, collecting the Revenue & enforcing the laws; I have had some experience in Military Matters having been employed in the Quarter Master's & Commissary's Departments at West Point N.Y. many years of my early manhood; I am now past fifty years of age & therefore not subject to be drafted, but I felt myself fully competent to drill or command a Regiment a Brigade or a Division. I some days since enclosed a copy of a letter from Gov Washington Hunt addressed to the Secretary of War in my behalf to my son, requesting that you would peruse the same if Col Holt should have left Springfield.

I should like to do something to aid in putting down this wicked rebellion and at the same time provide something for my six little daughters whose mother is dead.

I have the honor to be

Yours respectfully

Jacob H. Holt

Jacob H. Holt

essential to success, which we are anxious to devote to our country's cause, and, which cannot be here for the want of an opportunity is one reason

Several day since I received from you notice of my recommendation for appointment as assistant Surgeon in the 14th Illinois with an order for my examination &c At about the same time I received from Col McMurtry of the 102d the appointment of Surgeon of his Regiment. I immediately started for Chicago and have just got through with my examination - The Board of Medical Examiners have seen fit to place me upon the grade of Assistant Surgeon assuring me however that my standing with the Board is at least two grades higher than some who are now Regimental Surgeons

I expect within a few days to present to you such recommendations from the officers & men of the 102d Regiment and also from the citizens of Knox County as will justify you in appointing me Surgeon of the 102d Regiment not withstanding this decision of the Medical Board If I fail to do so however or if you are governed entirely by the decision of Said Board you will please cause my commission to be made out as assistant Surgeon of the 14th Regiment -

My brother the Editor of Menard Index at Petersburg may perhaps call upon you in relation to this matter as I have written to him by this mail -

I am your Obt Servant
