I have been waiting here since

Wednesday to see you. You may not recollect

me. I was introduced to you by Hon William

Marshall [Lamon?] and Hon [O.?] M. Hatch

I have been unfortunate and lost most of

my property by having to pay debts for other

people I now desire to get an appointment

to a clerkship at Washington and respectfully

ask you for a letter of recommendation

I have done as much and made as great

sacrifice to sustain the government as any

man in the State of my means I have two

upon the Government

Now Gov will you be kind enough to write

I enclose a recommendation of Judge Kellogg

I have been waiting here since

Wednesday to see you. You may not recollect

me. I was introduced to you by Hon William

Kellogg at Washington two years ago

and in company with yourself the Judge

Marshall [Lamon?] and Hon [O.?] M. Hatch

we went up to [Grovers?] Theater

I have been unfortunate and lost most of

my property by having to pay debts for other

people I now desire to get an appointment

to a clerkship at Washington and respectfully

ask you for a letter of recommendation

I have done as much and made as great

sacrifice to sustain the government as any

man in the State of my means I have two

sons in the army one in the 33 near New

I therefore feel that I have some claims

upon the Government

Now Gov will you be kind enough to write

as strong a letter as you consistantly can and

forward the same to me at Macomb

Respectfully Your

Obt Servant

A. C. Wiley

I enclose a recommendation of Judge Kellogg

and Judge Trumbull to a former paper

which I did not use will you be kind

to return the same to me with the letter

position he desires. a man of integrity

and high moral standing in

and one who has contributed liberally

money for the success of the republican

cause, and if anyone is entitled to

consideration in the bestowment of

My Dear Sir

I notice that a bill is now before the Legislature looking to the regulation of rail road tarriffs, I have given this subject considerable attention and am fully satisfied that the rail road and agricultural interests are mutual. That some of the rail road companies in the state have established tarriffs that bear unequally on the producers in different localities is quite certain, I however doubt not but measures might be taken to harmonize a seeming conflict between these two great interests that would prove mutually beneficial, and be satisfactory to all parties interested I have not seen the bill and therefore do not know whether its provisions are calculated to meet the object contemplated or not. I see that it provides for the appointment of three Commissioners to carry into effect its provisions. The deep interest I feel in this subject inclines me to ask to be appointed one of the Commissioners.

Yours truly

It is with no small degree of satisfaction that I can address you with a feeling of quietness and confidence in the stability of our Government and especially of the stability of the North West. This I feel notwithstanding I am in full possession of the facts that there has been an extensive arming of the K.G.C.s in the States of Illinois-Indiana & Ohio & know where I can find some of the arms. But in addition to the Regiments that are placed at your disposal there is a power organized ready for any emergency and when the hour arrives, that disloyalty shall unfold the flag of Disunion, an avalanche will be hurled upon it with terrible vengeance that cannot be resisted. I rejoice that you are in possession of the means of arming a force under your own control. They will no doubt be officered by prudent but earnest & determined men who will shrink from nothing in the time of danger, but few here know of these regiments, and few outside also

know of the extent of that army of Locusts of the old Prophet that is gathering for your protection and for your protection & for the protection of the Government. I may spend two or three weeks in Connecticut as I have been invited to do, but shall not leave here until after the fourth of March perhaps the 10th. I hope that State may be saved to the Union and I believe will be, but for some bickerings that have crept in to the Republican party
