It was an impressive sensation to read a signature so long unthought of except as an early memory. Is the fact, here confessed, my fault. Has your life, all this time, been like mine before the public, and I none the wiser? I am certainly a most absorbed person, knowing far too little of what is going on, save in the [my?] studio and in the field of out door nature. I being a red hot hater of the world-power policy of the Anglo Saxon and the old world empires, have buried patriotism deep deep and my country in where ever I see a good man---for, spend my life in scolding I will not, while the sun can rise and so much life can go on. No I haven't yet heard of your son. I enjoy the thought of his

I think it was merely a slight inaccuracy of expression that made you express a wish to "constrain the over enthusiastic devotee." You probably agree with me that there can't be too much enthusiasm. The trouble is imitation enthusiasm. Yours very sincerely Abbott H. Thayer

I enclose, also, a letter from him to your dear lamented husband, written as you will see, two weeks before his death. The book was detained somewhere on the way, I received it four or five weeks since, and should have forwarded it ere this, but for absence from home.

Dear Madam: I mail to your address a copy of my "Pioneer Boy" in the Greek Language, translated by Rev. Mr. Constantine of Athens, Greece. I enclose, also, a letter from him to your dear lamented husband, written as you will see, two weeks before his death. The book was detained somewhere on the way, I received it four or five weeks since, and should have forwarded it ere this, but for absence from home.

You will appreciate this translation of the volume into Greek as a tribute to the character of Mr. Lincoln, so loved

by his countrymen, and so honored by the people of other lands. The thought of his exalted virtues cherished by the memories of all, must be a solace to you in your deep affliction. May the Lord of all administer his grace so that this great sorrow may work out for you and yours a far more exceeding and eternal weight of joy.

<text>The Stuart-Hall family descends from Robert and Hannah Stuart. Robert, a Presbyterian minister and professor of languages at Transylvania University, married Hannah Todd, the aunt of Mary Todd Lincoln and Elizabeth Edwards. Robert and Hannah's son, John Todd Stuart, came to Illinois in 1828 after studying the law and immediately set up practice in Springfield. He fought in the Black Hawk War as a major in the battalion in which Abraham Lincoln had commanded a company. He served in the House of Representative from 1832-1836 serving with Lincoln. When Lincoln passed the bar, he practiced with Stuart until 1841. Stuart was elected to Congress, in 1838 defeating Stephen A. Douglas. After serving two terms, he went back into practice with Benjamin Edwards, but was then elected to the U.S. Senate in 1848, serving one term from 1848-1852. After being elected to the U.S. House in 1862 and serving one term, he returned to the practice of law with Edwards. In 1858, his son-in-law, Christopher C. Brown joined the firm. John T. Stuart also served as president of the Springfield City Railway Company, president of the Springfield Watch Company, president of the Betty Stuart Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the National Lincoln Monument Association.

Stuart married Mary Virginia Nash of Jacksonville, Illinois on October 25, 1837. They had seven children: Elizabeth (Bettie), John Todd, Virginia, Frank, Robert, Hannah and Edwards. Bettie married Christopher C. Brown, a lawyer. After John T. Stuart’s death on November 28, 1885, Brown continued the law firm, eventually bringing his son, Stuart, into the practice.

John Todd and Mary Virginia's son, John Todd Stuart, married Emily Webster Huntington. Their daughter, Mary Virginia Stuart married George Ketchum Hall and their children included George Stuart, Henry Huntington, and Archibald Stuart.

The Stuart-Hay Families Papers at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library contain correspondence between several members of the Stuart family. <text>
At a general meeting of the committee of the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society, held at No. 27 New Broad street, E. C. London, on Friday, the 5th day of May, 1865, the following resolution was unanimously adopted, and the secretary was instructed to forward to the Hon. C. F. Adams, United States minister in London, copies of the same for transmission to Andrew Johnson, President of the United States, and to Mrs. Lincoln.

resolution.

The committee desire to record the feelings of dismay and sorrow with which they had heard of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States of America, and of the murderous attempt upon the life of his colleague, the Hon. W. H. Seward. While they regard these crimes as unparalled in atrocity, deserving, as indeed they have justly excited, universal reprobation, they consider that the peculiar circumstances under which they were perpetrated remove them out of the category of ordinary crimes, and give them a deplorable prominence as the natural manifestations of the execrable system of slavery directed against the exponents of a policy of freedom.

The committee deem it especially their duty to bear their testimony in appreciation of the high qualities which distinguished Abraham Lincoln as the ruler of a great people, who during a season of unprecedented difficulty consistently adhered to principles which have happily been accepted by the nation, and in their application will secure the liberty of four millions of our fellow-creatures, held oppressed and degraded in the very worst form of bondage. As the emancipator of the slaves in the United States, Abraham Lincoln is entitled to the gratitude of all mankind.

The committee, in condoling with the people of the United States on the occasion of the signal loss they have sustained in the sudden removal of their late President, would express the confident hope that they will remain steadfast to the policy of emancipation, to the steady development of which his life was consecrated, and to which he fell a martyr, and will strengthen the hands of his successor to pursue the same noble course. They also fervently trust, that in the high and responsible position which Andrew Johnson, now President, has been called to fill, he may be guided by the wisdom which cometh from above; that he may be endowed with the forbearance which tempereth justice with mercy, and be spared to bring to a happy and peaceful consummation the work Abraham Lincoln began.

The committee would further express their profound sympathy with the family of Abraham Lincoln, under the bereavement which bows them down with grief. At such a solemn time they will derive consolation from the worldwide manifestation of sorrow and regret which the violent death of him who was their head has elicited, and will be strengthened to bear up against this grievous calamity, and be cheered by the reflection that he and his descendants will bear an honored name, which the ever-increasing multitudes of a once down-trodden race will hold enshrined in their hearts to be transmitted to remotest posterity, as that of one of the greatest benefactors of mankind.

Originally begun as the Paepcke-Wagner Company operating as a small lumber mill, the business grew to include box-making operations. The company eventually became a major lumber distribution company in Chicago. In 1898 a second location in Greenville, Mississippi opened and operated as the Paepcke-Leicht Lumber Company through the 1920s. Additional locations opened in Blytheville and Helena, Arkansas, and Cairo, Illinois.

After Hermann Paepcke died in 1922, his son, Walter, took over the company. In 1926, Walter Paepcke merged the Container Corporation of America into the company, leading the company to become the largest paper container producer in the United States during the 1940s.

The Chicago Mill and Lumber Company was purchased in 1965 and continued to operate from its Greenville, Mississippi, facility until 1980.

Photographs in this collection include images of the Chicago Mill and Lumber Company's business operations from cutting trees in the woods through the manufacture and shipment of paper, corrugated paperboard, and boxes.</text>

<text>Hermann Paepcke founded the Chicago Mill and Lumber Company in the 1880s.
