Will you therefore have the kindness to call on the President & say a word in my behalf. A word from you will I think be sufficient

I know that you have done a great deal for me. My obligations to you are more than I can ever repay & yet I ask this additional favor believing that you can & will grant it.

If however I was to be removed from here then a District Judgeship in one of the Southern States or in one of the Territories would suit me precisely. If one of these could not be obtained then I would be glad of a position at Washington. You know what I am qualified for & what would suit me.

I am perfectly satisfied that you can induce the President

Please consult with Judge Lewis about this. He will I presume give you a letter to the President in my behalf if you think it necessary.

If I was at Washington in an official position, I might be able to render you material service before the next Presidential Election.

You ought to have some one person there who could & would make it his specialty, to advance your interests With Newspaper reporters & others

District of Tennessee

Nashville, Tenn., June 8th 1865

My Dear Governor

A letter has been written to President Johnson, as I am informed, Signed by a few individuals here, requesting that the Tax Comissioners in my state be removed & that Citizens of Tennessee be appointed in their places. Will you therefore have the kindness to call on the President & say a word in my behalf. A word from you will I think be sufficient

Before calling on the President please call on Judge Lewis who will inform you whether

or not I would be removed & whether the duties of my office have been performed faithfully Energetically & honestly & to his entire satisfaction

If however the President concludes to remove us & appoint Tennessians then Governor I rely upon you to procure me another appointment.

I know that you have done a great deal for me. My obligations to you are more than I can ever repay & yet I ask this additional favor believing that you can & will grant it.

I have held this office only eighteen months; My business at home is all broken up

I have saved very little above

my salary. At Memphis I made a little money. but for the past year have not made one cent other than my salary. During the present year if I remained here I think I could make some money. If however I was to be removed from here then a District Judgeship in one of the Southern States or in one of the Territories would suit me precisely. If one of these could not be obtained then I would be glad of a position at Washington. You know what I am qualified for & what would suit me.

I am perfectly satisfied that you can induce the President

instead of removing me to transfer me to some other & possibly better place.

I take it for granted that your ambition is not yet satisfied & that your motto is still "Excelsior" I sincerely hope that your wishes will be gratified in the future.

Please let me hear from you as soon as possible, by telegraph if necessary.

                    <text>
Waukegan March 3rd

My Dear Gov.

Last Friday I read a letter from you. And I sat up in bed and answered it. I fear you did not get it before leaving home.

The Journal of last evening announced that you Was in Chicago En route for Washington. This Morning I telegraphed you. And recd reply from the operator. That you had left. I intended to go to Chicago to report to see you. And Was Much disappointed to learn that you had gone.

I was very anxious to see you in relation to Genl MClernand. He relies upon you to appoint him. He thinks that Grant has [violated?] the order of Prest in depriving him of the Command of the Expedition.

Although second in Command he is a mere cipher. He has been appointed by Grant to the smallest corps of the army numbering less than 3,000 & the duty imposed upon him of guarding the Miss river from [Nulina?] to Vicksburg thus actually Making a mere police officer of him. With no opportunity of distinction for active service.

You will at once perceive that it is a very different position from that he supposed he would occupy and he feels keenly the disgrace.

{Wallich?] is at the bottom of the Whole Matter. And Grant is Willing & Anxious to snub MClernand. & drive him out of the service. Some men could submit to it. MClernand cannot. He is too ambitious, too desirous of distinction and applause, too anxious to "shine", and Consequently chafes terribly [illegible] his disappointment. His Motto is "Out Caesar Out [Vulturs?]. and he threatens to resign unless he is reinstated in command.

It is decidedly for our interest that he should have the Command of the Expedition or some other [illegible] command. not out of the [cotton?] regions. Grant will Extend favors to us occasionally, but although the parties have got the inside track with him and will expect it. With MClernand we can do anything. Grant is a candidate for the Presidency. A clique in Washington at the head of Whom is E B Washburne is now fittlng him for the course.

Grant denies this emphatically but my opinion is based principally upon Conversations Which I had with Grant. If the Movement is successful Washburne is to to be secy of state if Lincoln is a candidate for reelection. Cant you use this with him?

I am rejoiced to [perceive?] the overwhelming manifestations of the army, & of the people at home in your favor. At Every public Meeting in the state or in the army. Language is exhausted to find words strong enough to express the feelings of admiration and confidence of the people & army towards him noble hearted Governor.

The resolutions adopted at these meetings express the genuine & spontaneous feelings of the people & army & if you had ever so much vanity. I am sure it must long before this have been fully satiated. Those manifestations must be particularly gratifying to you When you recollect. That you have received more of them than all the other Governors of the Union Combined

If you Experience half as Much pleasure from them as I do you are a happy Man.

For fear that your aid not got my letter of last Friday I will briefly state the [essence?] of our trip down the river. We found no opening for cotton at Vicksburg. I obtained from General Grant a permit allowing N B Tayler to take his stock of goods from Memphis to Vicksburg & sell to [Suttlers] & officers.

The amt of the stock Was Not specified. Taylor returned with me to Memphis. I left him there. I was then quite sick. in fact unable to sit up. I returned home. I have recd only One letter from Taylor. He had not yet left Memphis. Consequently I know nothing of the final result. I dont think that any other permit was paid by Grant to any man. I know that hundreds of thousands of dollars of goods were waiting at Memphis to be shipped to Vicksburg but no permit could be obtained for a dollar [illegible]. I am satisfied that Grant paid the permit Exclusively on your account.

The [best?] [Mres?] Taylor said to Mr Frese "Say to the Governor I will make $10,000 apiece for us this trip." If it is half that amt I shall be satisfied

Write me if you have leisure. I shall go to Springfield the 15th if I can do anything there for you, Command me.

Being truly
Your friend

                <text>

Being truly
Your friend
E. P. Ferry

I felt deeply hurt this morning to learn that Babcock on Thursday was blowing around the Tremont house. That I was in collusion with Taylor; that I was against you; that I could fix Taylor up if I wanted to.

The money you have got. and in the event of a [fight?] my evidence would support your right to it. This I told Taylor, Larned, Parks & others. In fact I informed them all, that Taylor had not one chance in a thousand to recover a cent of the money. This opinion in connection with the [cause?] that I presumed in the matter has found Tayler against me. that extent

I have not seen Taylor or heard from him since you left.

I wrote him this morning to come & see me without fail on Monday. I am pretty well satisfied that he has "gone back." on me, & intends to keep what he has got. I felt deeply hurt this morning to learn that Babcock on Thursday was blowing around the Tremont house. That I was in collusion with Taylor; that I was against you; that I could fix Taylor up if I wanted to.

&c &c. Miss [Sharper?] has made [illegible] the slightest foundation in the [illegible] & I cannot imagine the motive of Babcock. Except he desired to create distrust & ill feeling between you & myself. I cannot conceive how I could be in collusion with Taylor as against you. The money you have got. and in the event of a [fight?] my evidence would support your right to it. This I told Taylor, Larned, Parks & others. In fact I informed them all, that Taylor had not one chance in a thousand to recover a cent of the money. This opinion in connection with the [cause?] that I presumed in the matter has found Tayler against me. that extent

that he will not even come to see me & the result will be that I shall get no answer from him. I shall lose what I advanced. & yet will be charged with being in a conspiracy with him against you.

Taking it all around it is decidedly pleasant!!

I shall leave for Memphis by Monday the 4th Very truly yours

                    <text>
Nashville Dec 11th 1864

My Dear Governor,

Yours of the 3d was recd last Evening.

Before leaving home I ascertained that Washburne

was a candidate. He was

in Chicago the day I left, but

I did not see him.

J. J. Cory (not the Doct., the Doct.

is his Father) Editor of the Gazette

recd from some source, a

strong article in favor of

Washburne, With a request,

"please insert," He brought the

article to Me & I insisted that

it would not be published.

Cory who is my Bro in Law

is your fast friend. Be Kind

enough to drop him a friendly

line. he will appreciate it.

He was at Springfield a

few weeks since & thought

he was treated rather coolly

in your office. I informed him

that it could not have been

intentional.

I am aware that Col Payne

is doubtful. I sent for him

on the 29th of last month & had

a long interview with him at

my office in Chicago. He said

he intended to carry out the wishes

of the people of [Ad?] Co. in reference

to Senator. He said that you were

the choice of a very large Maj.

of the people. in fact he had

seen only one man who was

opposed to you. but he refused

to pledge himself. I am afraid

of him. His Father & Washburne

are old friends.

Haines Controls him. He

is Haines partner. If Haines

is for you, all will be right.

I dont think Haines is

Sound, however.

You will recollect, that

Haines was a candidate &

I opposed him. Blodgett was

my candidate. Blodgett

beat Haines badly in the

Election of delegates. On the

morning of the Convention

Payne was brought out by

Haines friends as a com

promise candidate & was

nominated. From this you

will perceive that Payne

thinks he is under no obligation to

Me for his Election.

Although I did not oppose his nomination

I know of but one thing

to pull upon him. Which is if

he votes against you he can

never be reelected.

I have no doubt of your

Election. yet no effort should

be spared, to secure succefs.

It will be impofsible for

me to go home before the Legislature

meets. I have been absent so much

during the past summer & fall,

that the businefs of the office in more

than one quarter behind. Our [Duty?]

report is not yet sent on. One of

the [illegible] is Completed to go to Washington.

next week, but let the consequences

be what they may, I will be in

Springfield. On the 30th or 31st inst.

& will adopt some plan to secure

Col Payne's vote for you. I will

have my wife meet me in Springfield

which will save the time that would

be occupied in going home.

My Dear Governor,

Yours of the 3d was recd last Evening.

Before leaving home I ascertained that Washburne

was a candidate. He was

in Chicago the day I left, but

I did not see him.

J. J. Cory (not the Doct., the Doct.

is his Father) Editor of the Gazette

recd from some source, a

strong article in favor of

Washburne, With a request,

"please insert," He brought the

article to Me & I insisted that

it would not be published.

Cory who is my Bro in Law

is your fast friend. Be Kind

enough to drop him a friendly

line. he will appreciate it.

He was at Springfield a

few weeks since & thought

he was treated rather coolly

in your office. I informed him

that it could not have been

intentional.

I am aware that Col Payne

is doubtful. I sent for him

on the 29th of last month & had

a long interview with him at

my office in Chicago. He said

he intended to carry out the wishes

of the people of [Ad?] Co. in reference

to Senator. He said that you were

the choice of a very large Maj.

of the people. in fact he had

seen only one man who was

opposed to you. but he refused

to pledge himself. I am afraid

of him. His Father & Washburne

are old friends.

Haines Controls him. He

is Haines partner. If Haines

is for you, all will be right.

I dont think Haines is

Sound, however.

You will recollect, that

Haines was a candidate &

I opposed him. Blodgett was

my candidate. Blodgett

beat Haines badly in the

Election of delegates. On the

morning of the Convention

Payne was brought out by

Haines friends as a com

promise candidate & was

nominated. From this you

will perceive that Payne

thinks he is under no obligation to

Me for his Election.

Although I did not oppose his nomination

I know of but one thing

to pull upon him. Which is if

he votes against you he can

never be reelected.

I have no doubt of your

Election. yet no effort should

be spared, to secure succefs.

It will be impofsible for

me to go home before the Legislature

meets. I have been absent so much

during the past summer & fall,

that the businefs of the office in more

than one quarter behind. Our [Duty?]

report is not yet sent on. One of

the [illegible] is Completed to go to Washington.

next week, but let the consequences

be what they may, I will be in

Springfield. On the 30th or 31st inst.

& will adopt some plan to secure

Col Payne's vote for you. I will

have my wife meet me in Springfield

which will save the time that would

be occupied in going home.

Please Write me what Members are

doubtful & I will write them if I think it

I do not know what the charges are but from what I have heard I think they are trivial. Capt Gibbs I have known for years and he is an honest man. He has worked hard to raise his company and should not be sacrificed unless guilty. I hear it intimated that the charges are made to get his place. I hope you will see justice done him.

We claim according to Genl Grants order to transfer all wounded men to their own states, that we have a right to request the Govenor to see we have our rightes, believeing at the same time that you are our friend and will do

what you can to have, by your influence with the Gov, this thing accomplished. We have received no pay for the last seven months, and our families at home are neading our assistance at home to make arrangements and procure means for them to live untill we receive pay. We have been in the front for a long time trying to supress this Cursed Rebellion and have got badly hurt, have never had a furlough, and now -- claim that we have a right to visit our homes. Col do what you can and let us hear from you soon. no more but remain as ever

There is thirteen of us all wounded except one and some of them sick and quite feable, probably will never recover their health. We wer regularly transfered to our own state by the Comd of the Dept. of the Ohio and dont know why we ar not sent forward (to Springfield,

Col you are selected as one to use your influence, and believe you have influence, and will use it, with Gov Yates, to have us sent to Springfield as soon as possible, so we can get to make a visit to home, while we are not able for duty.

Col do what you can and let us hear from you soon. no more but remain as ever

yours with respect

E R Henry
