Sir: We have heard with profound regret that your late distinguished President, Abraham Lincoln, has fallen a victim to a vile conspiracy, and that he has been suddenly removed from you midst by the hand of a cowardly assassin. We have watched his career from the period of his election in 1860 down to his lamented death, as well through all the darkest hours of the struggle in which your country has been engaged as at the time when success seemed to be within his grasp, and we have ever recognized in him a self-denying patriotism, a devotion to the principles of right and justice, and a determination to surmount, by constitutional means, every obstacle which stood in the way of the final triumph of those principles. His unswerving faith never forsook him in the hour of depression and gloom, and he has left behind him a noble example, of magnanimity and moderation, in the hour of victory, which cannot fail to secure the admiration of the whole civilized world. Elected on the basis of a limitation of the area of slavery in the United States, he gradually and cautiously developed an anti-slavery policy, which re suited in the issue of an emancipation proclamation, by which every slave in the rebel States is now free; and he lived to see adopted by Congres an amendment to the Constitution abolishing forever slavery in the United States. He has not been permitted to witness the final achievement of this great work, but his name will ever be associated in history with the removal of this from your national escutcheon. It is not alone or chiefly on grounds of philanthropy that we have sympathized in his objects and aims. From the period when we beheld a section of your community, when defeated at the ballot-box, appealing to the arbitrament of the sword, without even the pretence of a grievance, excepting the alleged danger to the institution of slavery, we regarded free constitutional government as on its trial, and we have received with unvarying satisfaction the uniform consistency with which he always upheld the maintenance of the Union as paramount to every other consideration. In the recollection of these things we desire now, through you, to express our deep sympathy with your loyal-fellow cititens in the grievous loss you have sustained—a loss which, at this important crisis in your country’s history, cannot fail to produce serious and anxious concern. In the midst of gloom, however, we are consoled by the reflection that the world is ruled by principles, not by men; and that while the most distinguished statesmen are constantly passing away, the principles which they have propounded are immortal. Mr. Lincoln, it is true, has departed, but he has bequeathed to posterity an example which cannot fail to exercise a powerful influence on the future of your country. Abraham Lincoln has been assassinated. The death of this virtuous and great citizen is a universal misfortune. All humanity was struck down in its benefactor, the emancipator of the black race. In the midst of manifestations of public grief which come from every part of Italy to the representatives of your nation, the Union of the operatives of Genoa raise their cry against the murderers of Lincoln, and send, through you, to your brothers in America, the assurance of their profound grief. We hope that the calculations of the assassins will fail, and that this great crime will not arrest the successful progress of your cause. Fifer, who later became the governor of Illinois, and Gertrude Lewis Fifer.  Florence was active in family and children’s causes, and she established the Mother’s Club (a precursor to the P.T.A.) and the Lucy Orme Morgan Home for dependent girls.  She also worked with the Booker T. Washington Home for Negro children and the McLean County Tuberculosis Association.  She lobbied for the establishment of Fairview Sanatorium, which was dedicated in Bloomington in 1919. In 1924, after women’s suffrage was passed, Florence was encouraged to run for the State Senate.  She ran as a Republican and won, under the slogan “Law enforcement, Christian citizenship and reduction of taxes”.  Her bills included real estate tax payments in two installments, foster homes for welfare children, registration and standards for public health nurses, regulation of dance halls by county supervisors, control of state parks by the Department of Public Works and Buildings and the adoption of the state song, “Illinois”.  She was re-elected for a second term in 1929. After her terms in legislative office ended she chaired the McLean County Emergency Relief Commission, which distributed aid during the Depression.  She also was the founder and president of the McLean County League of Women Voters, and continued to be a persistent lobbyist, working for permanent voter registration, the Act for Aid to Dependent Children and revised adoption laws. A life-long Unitarian, Bohrer served as president of the board of her church and director of the American Unitarian Association. She received many awards and citations, including the Bloomington Community Service Award (1934), the Illinois Welfare Association Citation (1945) and the Distinguished Service Award from Southern Illinois University (1956). Lucas Collection Description An account of the resource Scott Wike Lucas was an Illinois attorney and politician. Born in Cass County, Illinois, on February 19, 1892, Lucas attended public schools and Illinois Wesleyan University, where he played baseball and other college sports. While in college, during his summers, he played baseball in the Three-I League, a semiprofessional baseball league organized in Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa. After college, Lucas attended law school and was admitted to the bar in 1915. Lucas served in the United States Army during World War I, rising to the rank of lieutenant. He would later continue his military association by serving as commander of the Illinois Department of the American Legion. After serving as state's attorney for Mason County in the 1920s, Lucas ran in the 1932 Democratic primary as a candidate for the United States Senate from Illinois; however, he lost his primary bid to William H. Dieterich. Governor Henry Horner then appointed Lucas chairman of the State Tax Commission, which Lucas directed from 1933 to 1935. In 1934, Lucas won election to the United States House of Representatives from Illinois. Four years later, he won election to the U.S. Senate and was reelected in 1944. Following President Harry S. Truman's reelection in 1948, Lucas became Senate Majority Leader. He served in that capacity only two years, losing the 1950 general election in Illinois to Republican Everett Dirksen. Lucas died on February 22, 1968. The Scott W. Lucas Collection consists of 38 photographs from Lucas' early life and political career. In addition to images of such influential American politicians as John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson, the collection contains several political cartoons satirizing Lucas and other politicians.
