True 41st Regt Ills Vol I wish him appointed Maj of the regiment now raising at Mattoon Ill Col Jonathan Richmond Commanding. I can recommend him as in every way a most worthy man and will make an excellent officer. He has been in the service ever since the war began, has acquitted himself very honorably on all occasions and particularly at Ft. Donaldson and Shiloh until he was wounded at the latter place. At Ft Donaldson he procured and carried home the body of his uncle Capt E. W. True being unharmed himself though receiving a coat full of bullet holes. At Shiloh he fell early in the engagement from a ball in his neck but recovered only <hr /> to be forced off the field by his superiors He has been recommended by his Col for promotion and is highly recommended as a temperate man cool, daring, and always reliable. Governor, I write you this plainly and frankly with some regret for my seeming want of Modesty, but excuse myself on the ground of right & Justice to one worthy and feeling you to be one from whom I can ask a favor.
