Dear Judge Bingham:-

I want to tell you how happy I feel and how rejoiced I am over the magnificent tribute which Major McKinley paid you, day before yesterday, in his address to the Wool Growers of Ohio. This tribute was magnificent beyond description, but it is no more than you deserve for your years of sturdy loyalty to the Republican Party and to the best government on earth.

I saw a statement in the news-papers that you had become identified with the free silver movement, and I was very much pained in consequence, because the people who are at the bottom of that are the worst and most dangerous element of our citizenship. You can, therefore, learn how pleased I was to realize that such was not the case, and I think this is the feeling on the part of all your old friends.

Judge Bingham, you are now an old man and it may not be many years before the good Father of us all calls you to the enjoyment of that happy home where all trouble and sorrows are at an end. You, more than any man alive to-day, are aware of the meed of praise to which I am entitled for the sacrifices I made and for the work I did in connection with that great trial of 1865. I am writing the history of that affair

2-- J. A. B.

now and will have it published some day, either during my life time, or after my death. It will be written from the strict stand point of loyalty and truth. I have always felt that I would like to have some brief expression from you in writing as to what you think of the manner in which I performed my duty to the country and of the reward to which I am entitled in the estimation of all good people. As a matter of justice to me, will you not send me a kind letter expressing your views in that regard?

Sending you my best wishes and praying that God will spare you for many years, I am,

Yours respectfully,

Dear Sir: The man referred to in my last letter has just sent me two papers one in the hand of Lincoln's first partner Stuart and the other written and signed by Logan. He says items of that kind are hard to find and asks four dollars each for them but finally intimated that he would accept seven dollars for both. Before I closed up with him I decided to forward them to you. I therefore enclose them herewith. Please acknowledge their receipt so that I may know promptly whether they have reached you safely.

The man I wrote to said he had nothing written by Herndon. Meanwhile I wish you would indicate if you still want something in Herndon's hand. If you do I will try to put you on the track of it. I have in mind a man who once showed me a paper written by Herndon. It was about the size of the Stuart document which I am sending you. I shall make him no offer till I hear from you; and besides he many not have it still.

The significant thing about the Logan paper is the file mark endorsed by the clerk on the back of the sheet "June 17 1853." The name J. H. Matheney clerk was written by a man I knew well when I was in Springfield. Later he was County Judge. He was Lincoln's best man at the marriage with Mary Todd.

The name "E. Douglas" in the Stuart paper is that of a Springfield lawyer and should not be confounded with "Stephen A. Douglas" altho the latter was also a lawyer.

<text>Herman Henry Kohlsaat was born March 22, 1853 in Albion, Edwards County, Illinois, one of six children of Reimer and Sarah (Hall) Kohlsaat. Reimer and Sarah Kohlsaat were abolitionists whose home was reportedly a station on the Underground Railroad. The Kohlsaat family moved to Galena, Illinois, in 1854 until moving to Chicago in 1865.

He became a travelling salesman, eventually working for Blake, Shaw and Company, a wholesale bakery owned by R. Nelson Blake, who was to become Kohlsaat’s father-in-law. In 1880 Kohlsaat married Mabel E. Blake and became a junior partner of Blake, Shaw and Company in charge of a bakery-lunch establishment in the city.

In 1883 he brought out Blake, Shaw and Company’s interest in the establishment and started H.H. Kohlsaat and Company, which for about thirty years was one of the largest baking establishments in Chicago. He opened several lunch stores which drew a good patronage from the businessmen of the Loop district.

In 1888 Kohlsaat was an alternate delegate at the Republican national convention held in Chicago. He became an early supporter of William McKinley, then Governor of Ohio, working for his nomination and election to the presidency in 1896. Kohlsaat was a friend, confidant and advisor of five United States Presidents: McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson, and Harding.

In 1891, Kohlsaat purchased a half-interest in the Chicago newspaper Inter-Ocean. In 1894 Kohlsaat abandoned his interest in the Inter-Ocean, and purchased the Chicago Times-Herald and the Evening Post. He converted the papers from Democratic to independent Republican organs.

His influence in the Republican Party helped draft the gold-standards plank during the 1896 convention in St. Louis. McKinley’s ensuing campaign for the presidency against free silverite William Jennings Bryan was ultimately won on the gold standard issues.

In 1901 Kohlsaat purchased the Chicago Record from Victor F. Lawson and combined it with the Times-Herald, naming the new paper the Record-Herald. Kohlsaat resigned the editorship of the Record-Herald for a time to devote himself to his real estate interests, but later regained control in 1910. He remained editor of the Record-Herald for two years, and then he returned to edit the Inter-Ocean. Kohlsaat left the Inter-Ocean after a year and became a member of the staff of New York Times.

Kohlsaat died October 17, 1924, in Washington, D.C., at the home of Herbert Hoover.

The finding aid for the Herman Henry Kohlsaat Papers, 1892-1924 may be found at: http://alplm-cdi.com/chroniclingillinois/items/show/383.

Photographs in this collection include portraits of several prominent United States politicians and elected officials including Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt and First Lady Grace Coolidge.</text>

sympathy with america.

At a meeting of Welsh residents in London, held at the Young Men’s Christian Association institution, Aldersgate street, on Monday, the 8th of May, the Rev. Owen Thomas Jewin Crescent, in the chair, the following resolutions were unanimously adopted:

I. Moved by Rev. Henry Richard, seconded by J. Owen, esq., Holloway, and supported by Rev. W. Rees, Liverpool:

Resolved, That this meeting desires to express its utter abhorrence of the execrable crime by which Mr. Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, was stricken down by the hand of an assassin, at a time so inexpressibly critical and momentous in the history of that country, while it cordially joins in the tribute of admiration so universally paid to the many admirable qualities of the deceased statesman, the honesty, simplicity, and firmness of his character, the rare self-control which he showed amid the excitement of conflict and the moderation and mercy with which he was prepared to use the advantages of victory.

II. Moved by Mr. John Griffith, seconded by Mr. J. Williams, London city mission, supported by Dr. Nicholas, Dr. Reed, Swansea, Rev. W. Lloyd, Aldersgate street, and Thomas Williams, esq., Pendarran:

Resolved, That the meeting would convey to the people of the United States the assurance of its profound sympathy under the appalling calamity that has overtaken them, and earnestly hopes they will not suffer themselves to be driven, even by the supreme atrocity of this act, from the disposition, so honorable to their national character, which they had previously displayed, to act towards their vanquished brethren in the spirit of true Christian kindness and conciliation.

III. Moved by Rev. J. Kilsby Jones, seconded by Rev. H. C. Parry, supported by Rev. W. Edwards Aberdare, D. Davies, London, and D. Rowlands, B. A. Lanbrynmair:

Resolved, That the meeting would further record the expression of its respectful sympathy with Mrs. Lincoln in the midst of the awful affliction that has befallen her, and trusts that she may be enabled to find solace in the thought that the father of the fatherless and the judge of the widow is God in his holy habitation.

Signed on behalf of the meeting:

It was moved by the Rev. Robinson Scott, D. D., and seconded by John Jameson, esq., steward of the Dublin centenary, Chapel circuit, supported by the Rev. John F. Mathews, ex-secretary of the Irish conference, and passed unanimously:

1st. Resolved, That we avail ourselves of this opportunity to express our utmost abhorrence of the atrocious and diabolical assassination of his Excellency Abraham Lincoln, late President of the United States, and of the cowardly and wicked attempt upon the life of the honorable William II. Seward, Secretary of State. That we deeply sympathize with the President, Congress, and people of America in the dire calamity by which, in a manner that scandalizes all civilized nations, they have been deprived of the great ability of him who, under God, succeeded in guiding the republic through a period of unprecedented difficulty in such a manner as to secure the admiration of the world.

That we fervently pray not only that peace may be speedily and completely restored, but that the noble aims of the late and present President, and the illustrious statesmen by whom they have been surrounded, may be fully realized in the utter extinction of the last vestige of slavery, without impairing the ability of the country to fulfil her high mission among the nations of the earth.

And that along with this prayer, we shall offer our fervent supplication on behalf of Mrs. Lincoln and family, who have sustained such sudden and irreparable loss.
