During the Civil War the school relocated to Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. In 1859 Chicago entrepreneur and Presbyterian layman Cyrus H. McCormick and his wife, Nettie Fowler McCormick, became the seminary's major financial patrons. The relationship between the McCormick family and the school remained well into the twentieth century. Shortly after McCormick’s death in 1884, the school was renamed McCormick Theological Seminary. Several campus buildings are named for McCormick family members including McCormick Hall, Fowler Hall, and Virginia Library.

After Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination in 1968, seminary faculty and students were active in the civil rights movement and provided assistance to displaced and injured participants. The seminary relocated to Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood in 1975.

The photographs in this collection include portraits of the McCormick Theological Seminary Class of 1896, school professors, and campus buildings.
</text>

Dear Sir
Will you grant me an intrusion for a few moments upon your time. Me a stranger wish no claim whatever upon your generosity and yet coming to you for a favor and with a sort of kind faith that you will not turn me away unsatisfied. I venture to approach you through the name of my noble husband Genl E N Kirk You knew him knew something of his [lofty?] character of his kind services and how many times been pleased to make acknowledgements of them to my husband's friends for these I have held you in a grateful remembrance and would thank you for them, and I have felt that to one so generous and kind I might make my strange request
I have sold my beautiful home in the west. have paid or secured the pmyt of all claims against my husbands estate thus nearly closing my business as Admin next week I intend returning with my only son to my old home in Philadelphia where for reasons which I will not trouble you with I desire opening a "young ladies seminary" what I desire of you is the privelage of using your honored name as reference you will understand the full value of it to me for such a purpose tis more to be desired than gold. I am hardly able to suggest to you the means by which you are to give such elasticity to your conscience this endorsing one whom you have never known for such a responsible position unless you could set upon the belief that a husband noble gifted and good as mine was could not choose a wife wholly unworthy of him. I do not say this of myself all I can say is that I had nor have no higher aim in this life for myself and my boy than to [ineligible][memory?] of my noble treasured husband

should you feel at liberty to grant the request which I have made bold to ask I shall be careful that my efforts to make my darkened life useful shall in no wise reflect discredit upon you with the hope that I may hear from you at your earliest convenience I am with highest admiration and respect yours [truly?] Mrs Edwd N Kirk No 231 North 12th st Philadelphia Pa

Dear Sir

Will you grant me an

intrusion for a few moments upon your

time. Me, a stranger wish no claim whatever

upon your generosity and yet coming to you

for a boon, and wish a sort of blind faith

that you will not turn me away unsatisfied

I venture to approach you through the

name of my noble Husband. Genl E. N. Kirk

You knew him, knew something of his lofty

character of his [Service?] services, and have many

times been pleased to make acknowledgements

of him to my Husband's friends, for these

I have held you in grateful remembrance

and would thank you for them, and I have

felt that to one so generous and kind I

might make my strange request

I have sold my beautiful home in the

West, have paid or received the payt of all claims

against my Husband's estate. Thus newly

closing my business as Admin, [Nep

ank?] I intend returning with my only son

to my old home in Philadelphia, where,

(for reasons which I will not trouble you with)

I design opening a "young ladies seminary"

What I desire of you is the privilege of using

your honored name as reference. You

will understand the full value of it to

me for such a purpose,'tis more to be desired

than gold," I am hardly able to suggest

to you the means by which you are to

give such elasticity to your conscience

this endorsing one whom you have never

known for such a responsible position.

Unless you could act upon the belief that

a Husband capable, gifted and good as mine

was, could not change a wife wholly un

worthy of him. I do not say this of myself

all I can say is, that I had nor have no

higher aim in this life for myself and

my boy than to be entirely worthy of my

[Earth?] treasured Husband

Should you feel at liberty to grant the

request which I have made bold to ask

I shall be careful that my efforts to

make my darkened life useful shall

Hon Richard Yates
Dear Sir

Your letter of July 22nd is rec'd and is not [late?] for my purpose. I arrived in the city too late to secure a suitable house or to accomplish anything of importance for the fall session- I hope to be all settled by the February term. I cannot sufficiently thank you for your correspondence to my request for the use of your honored name; I think I appreciate the full value of your generous offer-Twas almost a assumption for a stranger to make such a request of you, 'twas noble and generous of you to grant it. When I sent my letter to you I felt that you would be justified in refusing but for some reason which I cannot explain I believed you would gratify me. I think to expect this kindness was to be in keeping with my [conception?] ---- of the character of our noble Ex Governor; a conception formed from the record of his public life and services, a record everywhere marked by words and deeds of benevolent kindness, and which has endeared him to the hearts of Illinoisans no less than his scholarly statesmanship. His kind letter did not disappoint me, and I felt a thrill of gratification that I has not miscalculated the strength of the feeling which you have always shown for Ills officers & men, their misses and children. The words of justice which you give for any precious Husband, I have read over and over again. They shall be [illegible] into the treasury, the portion of my heart which I reserve for all such tribute to the dear dead hero whose love & memory are enshrined there,-For the great blackness which the war has cast about me, there is little else that has given cheering and comforting light as words of praise for my husband. In my earliest knowledge of him I beheld what is in him, which when grown and strengthened makes men honored & great. ---- In our married life of nearly eight most happy years, which his great generous heart to me all [unveiled?], so full of earnest life purpose, so eager on the fulfilment of his life's watchword "onward", so fearless and brave-so like a gentle woman in his kindness I have felt, for the world to know him as I know him, would make him what he truly was, " A man among men". And was the sweet incense of praise which come circling around his name from the lips of gifted and honored friends, meets from my heart a warm, quick response, for I know him well hero worthily it is bestowed and then goes out from my heart a blessing upon those who recognize the virtues of him whose name I am so [illegible] to hear, Your candid endorsement of my husband and your disinterested efforts for him were always a matter of pride and gratification to my Husband, and not less so to his wife.

It will certainly be agreeable and a sincere pleasure to me to see Gov Yates ----when he visits Phila if he can find time from his numerous friends here. I will be in at 281 North 12th st until I become established in my Seminary. When that occurs I may trouble you with my circulars. If I have trespassed too long upon your valuable time, I may please plead "not guilty"Your [illegible] kindness having called forth this lengthy intercession.

                    <text>
Quincy Illinois April 7th 1862

Dear Sir Having been compelled to obtain a leave of absence for 20 days on account of a wound in right leg I have returned to Quincy for a few days.

Since in the service I have been compelled to be convinced of some things of which I was not before fully aware. And some experience in studying the character and minds of the confederates have made suspicious certainties.

It may safely be assumed that of the people who have been born and raised in our borde slave states or who have emigrated thither from other Slave States 9 out of every 11 of the whites are really secessionists. The difference between them being only in the Shades of opinion, and in the capacity and opportunity for doing evil. The causes which have induced this State of things are of course many but they all refer directly to the institution of slaver. Almost without an exception, the men in the State of Missouri, and probably in the other border Slave States, who own or are in favor of slave property, confound efforts with object, And as the prosecution of the war to a limited extent necessarily renders insecure slave property, they think this the sole object of the war. It is for this reason

that our unity and kindness towards the rebels is received with so little good. Their minds are firmly made up to believe that the object of the war is the destruction of slavery, and no amount of argument convinces them that this is not true, and in so many instances our kindness and unity is as lost upon them as it would be upon swine.

The cause of the war is probably the growth of two institutions (under the same general government) entirely incompatible and antagonistic – The weapons of ours are the emblems of educated peaceful and honest industry – and the instrument of the other ignorance and tyranny. Tho fire and water may be restrained in close proximity but will not unite – and have a permanent connection in the world it is that, of the free and slave State, (while so) there can never again be a union upon a permanent basis.

It might last for a few years but the tie which binds us would be severed again by one or the other, where war must follow. It may be that the constitution public opinion or the exigency or the times would not (now) authorize the directing the war against its real though remote cause. If so the peace obtained (at great disadvantage can only be the Hemlock not the olive branch – We may try as hard as we please while in camp to believe that the war has nothing to do with slavery, but its no use. There is not a

3.

“[buttemuch?]” to ragged but knows it, a contraband so simple as not to show it, and it can be seen in various forms in General Orders, while it shades the countenances of all commanding generals. The negro builds for the rebels the impassable [illegible], and the invulnerable casemate, the bench and the curtain, drives the transport and ladles the metal for their guns-- If mutes did this they would soon be at work for us.

In view of all this I believe it is sincerely hoped, that of the great aim of this war, by removing our disadvantage. Thus – for instance – let us take all the negroes whom any general officer may believe to be the property of a rebel (and use them for all the needs of the army to which they can be applied. For the 7th Ills. Cav. Reg there are about 35 waggons – 35 troopers now dismount to drive them. I would remount these troopers, and the negroes should drive the waggons.

100 negroes – could be used, I can specify the places for them all – and will do so in infantry cavalry and artillery if you desire it – One thing which would probably be exceeding well – would be companies and regiments (sappers & Miners) of Negroes – commanded by competent engineers – and armed

with the axe, shovel and pick –

This would be a first step, others would be taken as the exigencies of the service required, or the nerve of the rebellion might render necessary. The fact now is, that negroes escape, and that the army gets the credit by ignorance of reporters, of liberating hundreds daily. I am not despondent but do feel that this war is not very near its end, and that we must fight rigorously and with such advantages as may come within our grasp – What harm can there be, if we then appropriate to our own use, some of the sinews the energy and shear Samson of his locks.

We must now conquer or be conquered and the sooner we avail ourselves of all opportunities the sooner will the result be known.

I have the honor to be with perfect respect Your Obt Sevt Edward Prince

His Excellency Richard Yates

                <text>
