If you think you can give the appointment of Chaplain of one of our Ill regiments to a worthy Universalist minister of this county who can be recommended by the Representative to the Legislature from this county as a minister of fair talents, education and moral worth, I trust I will hear from you soon on this subject. The said minister was engaged in the Mexican War as a "private", and is willing again to serve his country; and trusts he will be ready, if the emergency arise, of seizing the musket on the battle field against audacious traitors, and using it successfully. I suppose a methodist minister left this morning as chaplain for one of our Regiments from our county.

Write to me immediately upon this subject.

Hon R. Yates - Dr. Sir: I avail myself of this opportunity of addressing you on a very important subject - I suppose you are willing that the various religious denominations should be represented in our Grand Union Army in the offices of Chaplaincy.

Respectfully yours,

February 14, 1863.

At a meeting of the Officers of the 82nd Regt. Ills. Vols. held this day, Lieut. Col. Edward S. Salomon was chosen chairman and Adjutant Eugene F. Weigel secretary, and the following resolutions were offered, and unanimously adoptet:

In consideration of the critical position of our country at present and of the intrigues of miserable politicians and partisans, who - while the true and loyal citizens of our state, with the sacrifice of blood and life, endeavor to destroy the enemies of our most sacred rights; - aid and abett these enemies, at home, by means of treasonable, and our state degrading resolutions, be it resolved:

1., That we, the German soldiers and citizens of the State of Illinois, who have declared themselves willing to sacrifice all for the preservation of the Union, have heard with the greatest indignation of the miserable treachery of the men, who dare to call themselves our representatives.

2., That we endorse with pleasure the emancipation proclamation of our President, and are at any moment ready to execute it with arms in hand.

3., That we regard our Governor Richard Yates, as one of the noblest, truest and most high minded patriots of the United States, and that we refute the infamous attacks and slanders, which have been made upon him by secesh-sympathizing members of the legislature of Illinois, as low and mean in the highest degree, and that we regret that we are no longer at Camp Butler, to have an opportunity of liberating the halls of our capitol, from this detestable scum.

4., That we condemn the majority-report of the house committee on federal relations most decidedly, and that we consider the authors and all those, who voted in favor of this report as rebels and traitors, who deserve to be hung by the side of Jeff. Davis and consorts.

5., That we, contrary to this report, consider the minority report of the same committee, as the noble expression of the sentiments of true patriots, and acknowledge and esteem the same as such with all our heart, and that we are convinced that the same will be endorsed by every soldier of the State of Illinois.

6., That we hope and wish, that this rebellion may soon be suppressed, but only by force of arms, and that then the traitors in the north as well as the leaders of the rebellion in the south, may not evade their just punishment.

7., That these resolutions be published in the "Illinois-Staats-Zeitung" and the "Chicago Tribune,"

and copies thereof be sent to the Governor of Illinois and to our representatives in Congress, as well as to our Colonel Frederic Hecker, who, unfortunately, was prevented by disease, from participating in this demonstration.

Dear Sir,

Since the receipt of your dispatch approving of the meeting of the Governors, events have crowded in & around Washington & changes have been made among the military commanders to such an extent, that I waited until now to answer your dispatch. Events now transpiring or about to take place in the field, may do away with the necessity or desirability of such a meeting. But whenever you deem it advisable that the meeting be held, please determine upon the place & time & I will go there.

In as much as the large Union Meeting in Chicago recommended the meeting, it seems proper that the call should proceed from you.

Very respectfully

yours

Edward Salomon.

Thinks, that recent events have perhaps made the meeting of Governors unnecessary but is willing to go when time & place is fixed.

Please forgive my delay in replying to your letter which I enjoyed reading and did not in any way consider a "breaking in" on my privacy, especialy as it contained so much of interest regarding my family and your collection of Booth mementos. By this time you have no doubt visited The Players with the friend you speak of and I am sure it was a thrilling experience to a young actor who can write as you did, about my grandfather It is a long time since I visited the Club, and in fact I have not

I was very interested to learn that from time to time you are giving lectures on the life of my grandfather and that there has been so much interest aroused. I fervently hope that you will soon be able to fill your glass hanging wall cases. During her lifetime my mother donated many costumes etc. belonging to her father to The Players. My own collection is thus small + intimate. I am wondering what is the small photograph of my mother you have acquired? Thank you for writing me such a friendly letter, and the best of luck to you.

Very sincerely

Thank you for your letter which I do not consider in any way an effrontery as you put it. I only wish that I could grant your request + furnish you with the photographs you ask for. Unfortunately I have with me here only family photographs which I would not care to give or loan; I am sure you will understand my feelings. Most of the material relating to my family I have had to put into storage + would be impossible to get at. - I would indeed enjoy hearing you lecture on April 9th which will be my birthday! - Again I am so sorry not to be able to help you out in this matter.

Dear Mr. Lenthall -

                                                                                                      Sincerely yours

Oct. 21st

My dear Sir -

I am sorry I was obliged to quit Boston without even a chance to say 'goodbye' to you, or to receive the '[pears?] and spelling book' which (the book) I am daily expecting - my friend Mr Tompkins having promised to send it to me.

This is the first opportunity I've had - since I left Boston - to acknowledge yr last kind letter, and even now I write in little less than agony; being somewhat crippled by a severe pain in my kidneys - an affliction which has troubled me many years, and which is aggravated by every little cold I take or any great exertion.

I cannot tell you, sir, how dearly I prize such

tokens of encouragement as those I have received from you and a few others, whose judgment I value above all the fulsome laudations so lavishly bestowed by the unthinking many upon a favorite.

Although unseen by other eyes, I draw from them renewed energy [&?] I sometimes turn to them for that encouragement, which all the
newspaper "puffings" and applauding audiences fail to [provide?].

I think sometimes I must be a little dead inside - then I feel [sated?] and weary of my good fortune, and believe myself to be the most ungrateful of animals. It is only when I turn to these few cherished letters that I feel myself

to be of some little use; and then I hope again to be one day of service to my kind.

Not seeing you in the seat I selected for you I feared you were prevented from attending - I wish I had known the reason, I cd easily have procured you another. I am glad you were not disappointed with the 2d performance you witnessed - it only proves how little one can judge of his own work; I was terribly dissatisfied that evening.

I will certainly bring my darling to see Mrs Sargent - in the Spring, if life and health are granted us. I was obliged to leave her in New York, the journey hither - without

rest - would have been too great for her, and besides, my mother needed the "sunshine" a little -but I miss her dreadfully.

Again thanking you for your kindly thoughts of me, and wishing you many, many years of health and happiness

I am very

Sincerely yours
