After the departure of Lincoln from Springfield, Feb. 11 1861, Herndon at Lincoln's insistent request kept the sign of Lincoln & Herndon swinging at his office stairway until after the death of the President. His first partner was Chas S. Zane Spring 1861 who had married Miss Margaret Maxey in 1859. The firm name was Zam & Herndon. In 1867 Alfred Orendorff entered the office as junior partner. Upon the election of C. S. Zane to the bench the firm name was shortened to Herndon & Orendorff. In 1877 Herndon retired to his farm and James Creighton became the junior member of the firm of Orendorff & Creighton. Upon the election of Creighton to the bench <hr /> Robert H Patton became the junior member of Orendorff and Patton. and this continued until the death of Gen. Orendorff. Patton is the leader of the Prohibition party in Illinois and is one of the most successful lawyers in Springfield, being noted for his success as a jury trial attorney. But Herndon did not give up his studies and in 5 years he had saved up enough from his meagre salary to enable him to enter the law office of Logan & Lincoln, this was in 1842 and in 1844 Herndon was admitted to the bar. Adams was the great-granddaughter of James Adams, Springfield's first attorney. Margery Adams's father, James L. Adams, worked as the railroads in California and Illinois including serving as chief clerk for the Illinois Central Railroad during the 1870s through 1887. After leaving the railroad, he worked as a fruit farmer and truck gardener. He fathered James L. Army American Civil War (1861-1865) Description An account of the resource John McAuley Palmer was born in Scott County, Kentucky in 1817. His family emigrated to Illinois in 1831, settling near Alton. Palmer entered Shurtleff College 1834 where he stayed two years. He moved to Carlinville in 1839 and read law in office of John S. Greathouse before admittance to the bar in 1839. Palmer was elected as a delegate to the 1847 Illinois Constitutional Convention. Palmer was elected as probate judge of Macoupin County in 1843. He won election to the Illinois State Senate in 1852 and served until 1856. Palmer helped form the Republican Party in Illinois, serving as President of the Bloomington Convention in May 1856 and as a delegate to the Republican National Convention at Philadelphia in June. Palmer was defeated as a Republican candidate for Representative to Congress. Palmer began his military career in May 1861 as Colonel of the Fourteenth Illinois Infantry. He received the rank of Brigadier-General in December 1861, commanding the 1st Division of Army of Mississippi at Stone River and Chickamauga. He was rewarded with the rank of Major-General and served Military Commander of District of Kentucky, 1865-1866. After his time in the military Palmer practiced law in Springfield with Milton Hay beginning in 1867. Palmer was elected Governor of Illinois on Republican ticket in 1868. He joined Liberal Republican Party in 1872 and soon after the Democratic Party. Palmer ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic candidate for Governor in 1888. He won election to the United States Senate, serving from 1891-1897. After his time in the Senate, Palmer returned to private life in 1897 where he edited Bench and Bar in Illinois (1899) and wrote Personal Recollections (1901). Ellsworth. The first Union martyr of the Civil War, Colonel Elmer Ellsworth accompanied Lincoln on his inaugural train trip to Washington, D.C.. After the war began, he organized the 11th New York Infantry, a regiment which Ellsworth outfitted in the distinctive outfit of the French North African Zouaves. Ellsworth was killed on May 24, 1861, during the Union's occupation of Alexandria, Virginia, where James W. Jackson, a diehard secessionist, shot Ellsworth as the later had just removed a Confederate from the top of Jackson's inn. She was one of five children of Charles D. Roberts, a men’s clothing merchant, and Octavia Ridgely, who was the daughter of prominent Springfield banker, N.H. Ridgely. Octavia Roberts attended St. Agatha’s Episcopal School in Springfield. She worked as a reporter for the Illinois State Journal prior to her marriage to attorney Barton Corneau in 1913. A former Springfield resident, Corneau was the son of W.B. Corneau, former treasurer of the Wabash Railroad. Barton and Octavia Corneau resided in Boston, Massachusetts, and Ogunquit, Maine. After her marriage, Octavia Roberts Corneau authored several books, both published and unpublished. Her published works include My Lady Valentine (ca. 1916); Lincoln in Illinois (1918); With Lafayette in America (1919); and The Perilous Isle (1926). Some of her unpublished works include “The Road of Remembrance” [Springfield in the late 19th and early 20th centuries]; “The Governor’s Mansion, (1853-1953), A Social History of the Illinois Executive Mansion”; and “’Little Occie’, as seen in the Journals of her Sister, Ann Ridgely.” Octavia Roberts Corneau died on March 14, 1972, in Ogunquit, Maine, at the age of 96.   The Corneau-Roberts Family Collection contains related images to the Octavia Roberts Collection. Title A name given to the resource Henry Horner Collection Description An account of the resource Governor Henry Horner (1933-1940) was elected in 1932 and reelected in 1936; however, he died in office during the third year of his second term. Horner was committed to cleaning up corruption in the Chicago-run Democratic Party machine. An expert on Abraham Lincoln, Horner was an avid collector of Lincoln artifacts and papers. His huge collection of Lincolniana became the foundation of the Illinois State Historical Library and its successor institution, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. Governor Horner also holds the honor of being Illinois's first Jewish governor. Items in this collection include portraits of Governor Horner, images from President Franklin D.
