Dear Sir

Your Excellency was kind enough to notice, under your own hand, the reception of my letter of the 13 ult. I most sincerely thank you for every word of your most eloquent and flattering reply - In conformity with your request I will endeavor to prepare my future letters

The election of tomorrow being, in my judgment, one of the most intense importance to our state, and, perhaps, to the Nation, I have deemed it my duty to be at home for a few days, and do all that I can in securing the success of our Union Ticket.

That Ticket, so far as our county is concerned, does not consist of the best material - having as I think too much of the old Locofoco element in it - nevertheless we intend to carry it if possible -

I am extremely anxious to have our next Legislature so constituted, as to give us without any uncertainty about it, a tried, reliable, unflinching Republican U.S. Senator in place of our present wavering gentleman from Adams. The Locofoco, Tory-Golden Circle wing of the democracy in these parts are in extacies over the elections of Indiana and Ohio, and every man of them is industriously engaged in drumming up their forces for the coming contest, and every possible means will be used by them to carry their point tomorrow
over

I sometimes fear that the Almighty is about giving us over to anarchy and confusion, as a punishment for our sins.

Slavery is doubtless the sum of all iniquity, but there are lesser sins, thousands of them, of a character sufficiently odious to call down upon us the frowns of a just and merciful God. and I cannot concieve of a more to be dreaded evil, as likely to be inflicted upon us by His chastising hand, than would be the triumph of the corrupt and corrupting democratic party.

From which terrible plague may His good Spirit deliver us by inspiring all our voters to cast their ballots for freedom and human improvement!

I am induced by another reason, of a more delicate and private character, than the foregoing, to address you at this time -

For some days past, I have been canvassing in my own mind the propriety of making the suggestion to you, which I am now about to make - In the first place however, I must say to you that, were I not satisfied that I am actuated in doing so by the most laudable and unexceptionable motives, not a single word would be uttered or written by me, that would in the least indicate my wishes in the matter.

On recieving your kind favor of the 14 ult and noticing the title "Col," which you had prefixed to my address, it occurred to me, that were I a holder of a commission, confering upon me that honor, it would be of great advantage to me in the prosecution of my agency - strengthen my hands in the work, give me a standing among and under Military men, more accessible to me, and very largely increase my influence and usefulness, in the sphere in which I have been called to act.

I propose this, for no other reasons whatever, than those already specified and would expect, (nor receive,) no emolument in consequence unless called to actual service in camp - but to such a call I should ever consider myself liable, and would always be ready to obey it.

I may say here, that I am not totally ignorant of military science, having held the Office, many years ago, of 1st Lieut. of an Atillery Co
in the State of Delaware, and in my younger days, cherished a passion for military parades. That I am not in camp now, at the head of a Regiment, is not owing to the want of a desire on my part to be in the field beating back, or crushing to the earth, the traitorous hordes of villians and thieves who are trying to lay their murderous hands upon all that we hold dear, but to the condition of my affairs and my family at the time of the first outbreak of the war.

Pardon me, Sir, for saying so much upon this subject. I do not, and would not urge upon you a compliance with my suggestion. There may exist insuperable objections, that do not occur to me, but which are well known to your excellency. If so I would not on any account have you take one step in my behalf that would in the least embarras you.

Hoping and praying that in the course of a few days we may be able to sing - inspired by the results of tomorrow's contests, "Glory to God in the highest! In Illinois Republican principles have triumphed!!

Governor of Ills.

Sir

To you as Governor of the State of Illinois (among whose sons we feel proud to be numbered) the officers and Soldiers of the 48” Ills Vol Infy desire to commit for future custody and Preservation the flag they have hitherto borne. The many privations, Hardships and perils endured whilst serving beneath its folds in behalf and for the unity of the Government it represents has endeared it and rendered it to us a sacred relic. As such we entrust it to the keeping of the State, whose honor has been in part entrusted to our keeping.

You will find inscribed upon it the names of Ft. Henry Ft Donaldson Shiloh and Corinth at each of which places it was borne by our regiment It has always been unfurled where duty and honor required and never trailed before the enemy nor [illegible] a retreat and although many of our brave comrades who followed it have fallen and sacrificed themselves for the Government and Constitution (Dear and Hallowed to us as the priceless heritage of our fathers) of which it is the emblem. Yet they fell only in the midst of victory on fields rendered forever memorable and Glorious by the triumph of their Comrades in arms. And to aid in which their lives were freely Given.

At the same time that we thus commit our “old flag” to you as the official representative of the State we desire to testify to you personally our appreciation of Your Constant efforts for, and sympathies with the Soldiers You have aided to send into the army of the union. And our confidence without distinction of party in your patriotism and devotion to the Government and Constitution

we are trying to preserve. We feel the utmost assurance that whilst the Soldiers of Illinois are maintaining the Glory of her name, and the heritage of her people in the field You no less earnestly and devotedly are striving to the same end at home

We have the honor to be with Great Respect truly & faithfully Yours

Your Engagements the Clerk told me prevented an interview My object in seeing you was the "Old Story, or petition," for place to learn if it were not in your power to assist me to some position by which I might obtain an honest & respectable livelihood for my family & self. You know, and all acquainted know, that less competent have been favored, men who have expended nothing, while I have expended all, to advance the interests of Our Country

Judge Parks of Aurora informed me that he had flattering prospects of a good position

If there be anything in the way of a position in the Pay Dept. that I might succeed in obtaining, please be Kind enough to inform me. Without any expression of egotism it seems as though I were possessed of sufficient intelligence and had expended sufficient, in the raising of men directly, & indirectly to guarantee me a position, to say the least, where I might receive a sufficient salary, or pay, to give to my family, a decent support. It would take 2 years to reinstate myself in business, as previous to the War Consequently I petition, if in your power, for some place by

which I may secure immediate help for them

The day of Election has come, & will soon be over, when I hope, in the name of Heaven, partisan feelings will be carried to a tomb from which they shall not be resurrected, until the last trump of Rebellion has sounded & Peace & quiet & National & Social prosperity be restorded to the land

If Politicians desire a prolongation of this War they can have it for a time. But I tell you Governor Yates, the People, are daily & hourly arming themselves with a weapon which will one day fall with destructive force upon the heads of all intriguing, dishonest & deceptive Politicians. That weapon is intelligence They are informing themselves, that they are the Masters & their Representatives, the Servants. And the time is not far distant when a recognition of this fact will be forced with killing weight upon the Partisan Representatives of our Country

There is but one successful mode of destroying the Rebellion, & restoring Peace. That mode is A Unity of Action, and an Honesty of purpose on the part of loyal men. In order to have this Parties must die, or be suspended, until the finale of these internal troubles

If you desire to address me at the Tremont House

Boats he was told he would receive a share of his bounty money and one months pay in advance as soon as they were on the receiving Ship at Cairo he has never received a cent yet he left home the 21st of August he is on the Gun Boat Fair Play under Commodore Fitch at Evansville Indiana, I received a letter from him a few days since stating that he understood they could not get any bounty nor but $12 a month and pay for their own clothing besides he is quite dissatisfied under these circumstances after what I have written I would like to know if they will not be obliged to pay him what was promised to him when he volunteered supposing you to be the Proper person to apply to for information on this subject will be my excuse for addressing these lines to you if in Error please inform me who to Apply to I hope you will attend to this and not pass it by and oblige an anxious Mother My Son name is George F Lincoln in this I will enclose my address

I hope you will Pardon the Liberty I have taken in addressing these lines to you in regard to my son who volunteered to serve his Country under the last call of the President. the circumstances under which he volunteered were these, notices were posted up calling for one thousand men for the Flotilla the notices were to this effect that those that volunteered would receive the same bounty as the Land companies and $19-20cts a month. my son talked with the recruiting officer he told him the same as the notice read but told him he would have to clothe himself out of his wages he volunteered for a year as they were taken for that term on the Gun
