(1814-1867) and Jane Kinnear Ewing (1818-1887). Captain Ewing served in the Civil War, rising from the rank of private to captain in Company B, 128th Indiana Infantry, seeing action during the Atlanta Campaign under General William Tecumseh Sherman. Upon returning from the war, he married Louisa Francis Harris (1844-1899) in 1865 and served as Deputy Postmaster and then Postmaster of Logansport, until his untimely death at the age of thirty-four. His wife, Louisa, served as Postmaster for a brief period after her husband’s death and remarried in 1881 to Jehu Z. Powell. Interstate Commerce Commission Description An account of the resource William Morrison was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives from 1854-1860, serving as Speaker of the House from 1859-1860. During the Civil War, he served as a colonel with the 49th Regiment of the Illinois Volunteers. While fighting in the United States Army, Morrison won election to the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1863-1865. After the Civil War, Morrison returned to his private legal practice until he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1870 where he served one term. He won election to the United States House of Representatives for a second time in 1873 and remained in office until 1887. President Cleveland nominated Morrison to the Interstate Commerce Commission in 1887, serving in the office from 1887-1897. He was chair of the commission from 1892-1897. Prior to serving as governor, Yates was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1851-1855.  During his time as governor, Yates, who was anti-slavery, was active in recruiting troops for the Union Army. After finishing his term as governor in 1865, Yates won election to the United States Senate where he served one term, leaving office in 1871. After leaving office, President Ulysses S. Grant appointed Yates to serve as a United States commissioner inspecting a land subsidy railroad in St. Louis. His son, Richard Yates, Jr., also served as Illinois governor from 1901-1905 and in the United States House of Representatives from 1919-1933. She attended elementary school in Mississippi (1916-1922) and high school and junior college in Chicago after her family moved to Illinois in 1923. She received her diploma from Provident Hospital School of Nursing in 1933 and degrees in Public Health Nursing from Loyola University (B.S. 1942) and in Administration and Supervision from the University of Chicago (M.S., 1954). Ms. Durham attended Tuskegee Nurse-Midwifery School in Alabama and did graduate coursework at Illinois Teachers College (1958-1965) and Roosevelt University (1965). Her forty-five year professional career included positions as staff and public health nurse, nursing school teacher/supervisor, consultant in maternal and child health and in personal and public service occupations, elementary/adult education teacher and librarian. She worked at such private and public organizations as nurse midwifery schools, Chicago Department of Health, U.S. Children’s Bureau, National League for Nursing, Illinois State Board of Vocational Education and Rehabilitation and the East Central Curriculum Management Center. Ms. Durham retired from the Illinois Office of Education in June 1978. She worked briefly on an educational research project at Eastern Illinois University, July 1978-June 1979. She was active in several community and religious organizations including: Senior Learners Program, Sangamon State University, American Nurses Association, NAACP, Springfield Urban League, Gray Panthers, Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation, and Project Area Agency on Aging.
