Dear Sir: You have no doubt Received from divers citizens of our State letters calling your attention to Matters that [were?] Regarded by the writers as of Sufficient importance to justify them in so doing. And I as an humble citizen beg leave to inform you, that at Mattoon in Our Co, it has Recently happened that Soldiers have, on their own authority taken it upon themselves to take into custody peacable citizens of the co, and march them to the offices of some person authorized to Administer Oaths and have there by threats and intimidation compelled them to take Oaths of allegiance I am aware of course, that this in fact can not [injure?] the persons so Sworn yet it occurs to me, that such conduct is not harmonious with the genius of our institutions nor compatable with the Rights of Citizens

who have violated no Law. For instance as I am informed Judge [Constable?] on his Return a few days Since from your City, where he had been in attendance on the Supreme court, was subjected to this sort of indignity, and that divers others Respectabel citizens of our Co, have been treated in like Manner. No Reason can be assigned for these outrages nor is pretended to be except, that Some one May have said, "He is a copperhead"/ These things are done no doubt out of the good will of the Soldiers, without any Military authority of a legitimate Character, but ought it so to be? The writer hereof, has no affinity with, nor sympathy for that Class known as copperheads, yet he is of the opinion that such conduct is [lawless?] & a suitable matter to call your Honors attention to as Governor of the great & Loyal State of Illinois. all of which is Respectfully Submitted

With John Monroe letter 2/6/64

Charleston Ill. Feby 4th 1864.

Respectfully Your Obedt Servant
Eli Wiley

His Excellency
Rich Yates
Governor of the State of Ill

Sir

I have just received a letter from Mrs L.A. Alexander of Alton requesting me in most urgent terms to procure from you, or through you, from the proper authority, the discharge of her young brother, Charles Thomas, from the army. He is now and has been for some time past prostrated by sickness. He is my nephew, and I feel a deep interest in his welfare for his sister's sake. She is a widow in feeble health, very weak eyes, and yet is entirely dependant on her needle for the support of herself and little daughter. Charles Thomas is a member of Company D. 52 - Ill. Col. John Logan, now near Memphis. Charles has never intimated a desire to be discharged, but it is believed that justice and mercy call loudly for his discharge. He was beginning to contribute material aid for

the support of his sister and her daughter when he enlisted, though but sixteen years old Unfortunately at the time, he had a very unpleasant home, and was persuaded to enlist by his older companions, contrary to the known wishes of his sister and friends

If he cannot be discharged please let him have a furlow to return to his friends and be cared for until his health is restored.

Very respectfully Your Obt Svt.

Elias Hibbard

Please address Mrs L.A. Alexander

Alton Ill.

Ansd Nov 1/62 32nd Reg

Elias Hibbard

Oct 13 62

Wishes Gov. to aid him in getting discharge for Chas Thomas of Co D. 32nd Reg who is unfit for duty on acct of sickness & besides the only support of an aged mother. Enclosed letter of Recommend from H.G. Reynolds

Address Mrs L.A. Alexander Alton

Usual letter and add in this as every other case that a [Commissary?] has just left [&c?]

Hon. Gov Yates

During the Civil War the school relocated to Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. In 1859 Chicago entrepreneur and Presbyterian layman Cyrus H. McCormick and his wife, Nettie Fowler McCormick, became the seminary's major financial patrons. The relationship between the McCormick family and the school remained well into the twentieth century. Shortly after McCormick’s death in 1884, the school was renamed McCormick Theological Seminary. Several campus buildings are named for McCormick family members including McCormick Hall, Fowler Hall, and Virginia Library.

After Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination in 1968, seminary faculty and students were active in the civil rights movement and provided assistance to displaced and injured participants. The seminary relocated to Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood in 1975.

The photographs in this collection include portraits of the McCormick Theological Seminary Class of 1896, school professors, and campus buildings.
</text>
