<text>Herman Henry Kohlsaat was born March 22, 1853 in Albion, Edwards County, Illinois, one of six children of Reimer and Sarah (Hall) Kohlsaat. Reimer and Sarah Kohlsaat were abolitionists whose home was reportedly a station on the Underground Railroad. The Kohlsaat family moved to Galena, Illinois, in 1854 until moving to Chicago in 1865.

He became a travelling salesman, eventually working for Blake, Shaw and Company, a wholesale bakery owned by R. Nelson Blake, who was to become Kohlsaat’s father-in-law. In 1880 Kohlsaat married Mabel E. Blake and became a junior partner of Blake, Shaw and Company in charge of a bakery-lunch establishment in the city.

In 1883 he brought out Blake, Shaw and Company’s interest in the establishment and started H.H. Kohlsaat and Company, which for about thirty years was one of the largest baking establishments in Chicago. He opened several lunch stores which drew a good patronage from the businessmen of the Loop district.

In 1888 Kohlsaat was an alternate delegate at the Republican national convention held in Chicago. He became an early supporter of William McKinley, then Governor of Ohio, working for his nomination and election to the presidency in 1896. Kohlsaat was a friend, confidant and advisor of five United States Presidents: McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson, and Harding.

In 1891, Kohlsaat purchased a half-interest in the Chicago newspaper Inter-Ocean. In 1894 Kohlsaat abandoned his interest in the Inter-Ocean, and purchased the Chicago Times-Herald and the Evening Post. He converted the papers from Democratic to independent Republican organs.

His influence in the Republican Party helped draft the gold-standards plank during the 1896 convention in St. Louis. McKinley’s ensuing campaign for the presidency against free silverite William Jennings Bryan was ultimately won on the gold standard issues.

In 1901 Kohlsaat purchased the Chicago Record from Victor F. Lawson and combined it with the Times-Herald, naming the new paper the Record-Herald. Kohlsaat resigned the editorship of the Record-Herald for a time to devote himself to his real estate interests, but later regained control in 1910. He remained editor of the Record-Herald for two years, and then he returned to edit the Inter-Ocean. Kohlsaat left the Inter-Ocean after a year and became a member of the staff of New York Times.

Kohlsaat died October 17, 1924, in Washington, D.C., at the home of Herbert Hoover.

The finding aid for the Herman Henry Kohlsaat Papers, 1892-1924 may be found at: http://alplm-cdi.com/chroniclingillinois/items/show/383.

Photographs in this collection include portraits of several prominent United States politicians and elected officials including Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt and First Lady Grace Coolidge.</text>

But I will preceed to inform you of the circumstance which is as follows - Last spring I hired one Martin L. Wallick to work for me on the farm. he was to work eight months for one hundred dollars. I was to pay him ten dollars during the summer the ballence when his time was out or during the coming winter up to the time of Capt Woolsey going off with his company I paid him some thirty five or six dollars. he worked four months and eight days. the ballance he told (Martin) me to pay to his sister. I told him I would which I can prove. When Woolsey went off the day before (Sunday) Martin Wallick came out to my house it being very rainy and wet

he asked me for my horse to ride into camp at Knoxville 3 1/2 miles - and he said that I should send in to camp on Monday and get my horse. he said come early for we will start off by eight oclock. The next morning I sent my son in for the horse, he went in camp but could not find the horse, he went to Capt Woolsey and told him that he wanted his horse. he (Woolsey) told him that he was not a going to let the horse go out of camp until Martin rode him out, and that Martin should ride him to war My son told him that the horse did not belong to Martin. Woolsey said he did not care the horse should go to war with him my son demanded the horse the second time Woolsey then ordered some of his men to take my son out of the camp which they did and immediately ordered Martin to mount the horse which they had hid in a board tent. he mounted and went off with the company on my horse. my son

then got a replevy and officer and followed and overtook them at Maquon, the officer Dept sheriff took hold of the horse to bring him off Capt Woolsey ordered his company to come to his help to keep or take the horse from the sheriff Woolsey [Martiny?] Wallick and a number of others laid hold of the horse, and took him from the officer, and told my son that he would give him up the horse if he (my son) would pay [Martiny?] thirty five dollars or get him another horse. my son told him that he would or could not do it as I did not owe Martin any thing, Well said Woolsey, he would be back in a week and then he would settle my son said that he wanted the horse, but if he could not get him then it would have to go so, Woolsey said that he would give him $110.00 for the horse then take off $33.00 I was then to have $77.00. so when Woolsey came up, I sent my son in to town and told him to demand my horse Woolsey would not talk with him. he said that he had bonds for $77.00 that I might have and went off never offered

Bonds horse money nor nothing what ever

Now your Honor I was left a widow one year ago with almost nothing all that I have is my horses, and Woolsey knew it I am now 50 years of age and not healthy, five children to make a living for that are at home and one of these a cripple that goes around with crutches now sir I cannot even get up my wood. I want my horse I do not want the money. I never offered the horse for sale to no person I am poor I have not the second dress for my Back neither have my children a change of clothes. yet for all that Woolsey and Martin Wallick I mean Capt Wright Woolsey & Martin L. Wallick stole my horse off. all this I can prove to you ask the number of witness and you can have them from one to hundreds I will now close hoping that your Honor will do something for the distressed as I am and send me back my horse not another one, for he was a good trusty horse that my children could work with I do not mean as the saying is make a poor mouth But I ask sympathy and demand justice futher when I come to see futher I have several bills to settle for M. <text>
Chicago July 17 1862

My Dear Governor,

The idea of a special session is I suppose abandoned.

While I regret this for several reasons yet I think it is sound policy. After the settlement made by you with the U.S. and the act allowing our fourteenth member of Congress to be elected by general ticket, there were no reasons which could have been assigned for calling a special session which would have been satisfactory to the people. If a special session had been called our party would have been divided on

the question of its necessity and expediency. The Chicago Tribune would have bitterly denounced it. This I state from personal knowledge of their intentions.

It might have furnished our political enemies with arguments to use against us at the Nov election. They would have claimed that a special session was wholly unnecessary, that it was called exclusively for political purposes, and that a large expense had been incurred unnecessarily &c.

Now for the future. A favorite motto with me (whether it is a good or bad one I will not say) is, "All is not lost that is delayed."

Both branches of the next Legislature must be secured at the Nov Election, and a majority of the republican members must be "Yates Men" when they are elected.

All members of the present Legislature who are favorable to your Election to the senate must be induced to become candidates for reelection.

This may not be practicable in every instance but generally can be accomplished with a little maneuvering.

Plans must be devised by which your friends shall be candidates in all republican districts. You have warm friends

in each of those districts. They must be posted up in this matter and can bring about the desired result. A little work in this direction before election may save a good deal of labor & trouble after election.

The first great object, however is to secure a republican majority in each branch. This in my opinion will be the most difficult task of all.

Plans are now being secretly concocted in some of the northern counties for another union movement by which the democracy hope to carry the Legislature. They intend to sacrifice every thing to that one end. They will sell

Treas. Supt of Schools county officers & Congressmen for members of the Legislature.

The democrats will select some leading republican in a republican district & promise him a nomination for Congress on condition that he will go into a union movement & use his influence to secure the election of a democratic rep or senator in his county.

I have strong reasons for believing that a plan of this kind is thought of in our congressional & senatorial districts. Church will be

the candidate for congress & Wm M Jackson for the senate.

I have not time or space to give you my reasons for this belief. This matters so far as Church & Jackson are concerned I desire to be strictly confidential. I may be mistaken & I do not want to do injustice to either of them.

We can defeat this movement in our district, but if it is attempted with us it will be elsewhere & the matter must be closely watched.

A friend at Washington advises me that Peck (who is now at Washington) as acting

chairman of state com. will not call or unite in a call for a straight republican convention.

He favors some kind of a mongrel concern. Church (LS) is not in favor of a union convention but insists that the call shall be so broad that all war democrats can come in. This plan might be well enough if the war democrats will join us in good faith but if they only want to get control of the Legislature I will see them d--d before I will even ask them to come in. I have no confidence in them & will not trust them. In my opinion we had better take a straight

forward course make party nominations & stand by them.

If the war democrats join us in any numbers either through a union call or through a plank held out to them [unclear] call they will want a portion of the offices & will not be overmodest in their demands. Dissensions will arise between us and them & even in our own party and the ultimate result will be disastrous to us as it was last fall.

We can carry the state and the Legislature by a strict party vote.

Let us then be content with and adopt that policy.

Your letter to the Prest & your proclamation meets with the hearty commendation of all except semi-secessionists. I hope to see you personally soon.

Very truly yours

                <text>
