My dear Sir:

To you I need make no apology for failing, so long, to reply to your letter of 10th ultimo. You were here in comparatively, peaceful times; you can, therefore, judge of the draft upon my time now. I accept all you say as true in regard to your friend Jno. C. Grierson Esq, and tho’ I do not remember to have met him, I need no other assurance of his worth than what you have said. I now know of no reason why I cannot co-operate with you in the matter; but you know it is not always best, in matters of this kind to say we will or we will not. Disclaiming all sympathy with the mere politician, I, nevertheless, feel and recognize all the embarrassments which, in matters of this kind, sometimes rest on men. As

you will be here before March, I will defer any further observations, in regard to the matter, until I see you.

But will we have a Country by that time? What has the Future in store for us within the next few months? These are questions which “return to plague us.” To you I may be frank. If the Republicans will do almost any thing (and much may be done without being inconsistent with themselves) we may yet hold the central states. Seward came well to the rescue on Saturday, but action is needed now. The Legislatures of Virginia and Tennessee are in session - convened at the instance of the Precipitators – and the Revolutionists are at work. Almost throughout the South, misrepresentation of the purposes of the Republican party has

been the principal staple of Disunion and Democratic speeches for the past year. Misrepresentation of the [grosest?] character. Few men in the south have met these falsehoods, and the localities in which your motives are understood are few. ‘Tis too late to say, they are fools to believe your revilers. I know they are fools, and the fact that they are so, makes the matter so much worse. It’s too late to discuss dogmas. Even secession is lost in the fact of Revolution. The Country ought to be saved – it must be saved. A wise policy on the part of the Republican members of Congress – some sort of action, to give the Union men of the south a chance to connect these misrepresentations will yet save the Central States. I trust they will yet do that which they admit to be right. If they will promptly do only this, we may yet roll back the tide

of disunion and Treason. Were none but Traitors involved, I should feel no concern for their fate; but the innocent and ignorant are to be confounded with the guilty, and civilization and progress must be retarded for a century. Disunion dies the day that the people of the South are restored to Reason – and those who have thus misled their followers will be hung upon the gallows of public execration.

I remember with pleasure our association in the 33d Congress when, together, we resisted the measure which produced the present fearful condition of affairs. Our worst apprehensions, at the time, are now fearful realities. I have no self-reproach. I have faithfully done my duty, and if ruin must come, in advance I wash my hands of the shame and crime which will attend the enemies of public liberty. You were worthy of the compliment so recently bestowed by the people of your state, and I wish for them and yourself prosperity and happiness.

truly yours,

We have had several conversations with Judge W. P. Kellogg in reference to the Transcripts' support of yourself for U. S. Senator. It Seems that our position has been considered equivocaly, more particularly so, in consequence of a little paragraph, mentioning EB. Washburn in connection with the office. The article was inserted during the absence of both Mr Emery & Mr Andrews, the writer being Wm M W. Fuller, an old resident of Mr Washburn's district and a personal friend and admirer.

We write this letter to assure you that individually and in the Transcript we will support you for the position & at the proper time the latter will take open ground to that Effect. So far

as the Peoria Representative to the Legislature is concerned we think you may rely on him. At present it is policy for us to keep quiet & find how the different parties mentioned in connection with the office Stand affected on the question and choose between them. Stark which joins us in electing two representatives will name one and we can do nothing but advise and influence him after his Election

We prefer communcating with you direct rather than through a third party, for we dont care to have any man say that he can influence us to do that which others cannot, and which has not the Sanction of our judgment

We are, Respectfully, Your Obt Servants

B. Washburn mentioning him in connection with that office. They assure their support individually and in the Transcript, at the proper time. The Peoria Representative can be relied on.

                <text>
Peoria Daily Transcript, Peoria, Ill., Aug 16 1864

Dear Sir/

Emery & Andrews

Emery & Andrews, Peoria Ills, Aug 16th 1864

Write in refference to the Transcript supporting the Governor for U.S. Senator. Also give account of an article written by M. W. Fuller a personal friend and ardent admirer of E. B. Washburn mentioning him in connection with that office. They assure their support individually and in the Transcript, at the proper time. The Peoria Representative can be relied on.

<text>The Stuart-Hall family descends from Robert and Hannah Stuart. Robert, a Presbyterian minister and professor of languages at Transylvania University, married Hannah Todd, the aunt of Mary Todd Lincoln and Elizabeth Edwards. Robert and Hannah's son, John Todd Stuart, came to Illinois in 1828 after studying the law and immediately set up practice in Springfield. He fought in the Black Hawk War as a major in the battalion in which Abraham Lincoln had commanded a company. He served in the House of Representative from 1832-1836 serving with Lincoln. When Lincoln passed the bar, he practiced with Stuart until 1841. Stuart was elected to Congress, in 1838 defeating Stephen A. Douglas. After serving two terms, he went back into practice with Benjamin Edwards, but was then elected to the U.S. Senate in 1848, serving one term from 1848-1852. After being elected to the U.S. House in 1862 and serving one term, he returned to the practice of law with Edwards. In 1858, his son-in-law, Christopher C. Brown joined the firm. John T. Stuart also served as president of the Springfield City Railway Company, president of the Springfield Watch Company, president of the Betty Stuart Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the National Lincoln Monument Association.

Stuart married Mary Virginia Nash of Jacksonville, Illinois on October 25, 1837. They had seven children: Elizabeth (Bettie), John Todd, Virginia, Frank, Robert, Hannah and Edwards. Bettie married Christopher C. Brown, a lawyer. After John T. Stuart’s death on November 28, 1885, Brown continued the law firm, eventually bringing his son, Stuart, into the practice.

John Todd and Mary Virginia's son, John Todd Stuart, married Emily Webster Huntington. Their daughter, Mary Virginia Stuart married George Ketchum Hall and their children included George Stuart, Henry Huntington, and Archibald Stuart.

The Stuart-Hay Families Papers at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library contain correspondence between several members of the Stuart family. <text>The Janotta Family Collection contains photographs relating to conductor/composer Alfredo Jannotta, his wife, activist and author Stella Skiff Jannotta, and their family. Several photographs belonged to their son, Navy Rear Admiral A. Vernon Jannotta.

Alfredo Jannotta immigrated from Italy by way of London to Boston in 1865 where he taught voice at the New England Conservatory of Music. He married his first wife, Alice Prudy and they had a son, Edward, before Alfredo moved to Cincinnati in 1868. Alfredo spent 12 years in Cincinnati teaching vocal performance as well as conducting the Cincinnati Choral Society and organizing the first Cincinnati orchestra. He moved back to Boston in 1881 but moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1882 and finally to Chicago in 1888 where he established himself as a vocal teacher.

While teaching in Chicago, Jannotta taught vocal lessons to Stella Skiff whom he married in 1893. Skiff was the daughter of Iowa businessman Vernon William Skiff and his wife, Mary Frances Coffin. Her brother, Frank Vernon Skiff founded the Jewel Tea Company which later grew into a national grocery store chain including Jewel, Osco, Eisner, and White Hen.

Skiff continued her singing career after marrying Jannotta and briefly taught lessons. Between 1894 and 1898, she gave birth to sons A. Vernon, Francis, and Joseph. Between 1917 and 1918, Stella adopted three foster daughters, Margaret, Marion, and Betty (Elizabeth).

In the early 20th century she began taking an active interest in causes including the suffrage movement and socialism. Stella Jannotta joined the Chicago Political Equality League (predecessor to the Chicago League of Women Voters) in 1907. She wrote for the propaganda arm of the organization, including a 1916 article entitled "Public Opinion" which she revisted several times over the following decades.

A. Vernon Jannotta, the oldest son on Alfredo and Stella, served in the United States Navy in both World War I and World War II. He rose through the ranks of the Navy and the Naval Reserves, eventually retiring as a Rear Admiral in 1954. Jannotta received several military honors including the Navy Cross, Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and a Purple Heart.

Jannotta began working at the Jewel Tea Company in 1919 and held several positions at the company for the next 50 years. He also held several executive positions or held stakes in several companies including Lehman Brothers, Motor Institute of America, Tapp, Inc. and Consolidated Trading Corporation.

The finding aid for the Janotta Family Papers, 1809-1972 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum may be found at http://alplm-cdi.com/chroniclingillinois/items/show/358.

Photographs in this collection include images of Jannotta and Skiff family members as well as students of Alfredo Jannota.</text>
