</p><p>I wish to ascertain the condition of a piece of property, viz 160 acres of land in the city of Peoria- (in the new part of the city) This land was formerly owned by Wm Sullivan, who by his will, bequeathed it to his wife Emma Sullivan for her use during her life-time, it then to pass to his daughtesr Mary and Matilda.
</p><p>After the death of Mrs Sullivan, the two daughters died before attaining their majority, and the only heirs now to the estate are Elizabeth Morey and Margaret Eastwood the sisters of Wm Sullivan as they claim. I wish to ascertain all I can in regard to the title of the property and particularly as to the claim of the said Elizabeth Morey and Margaret Eastwood. By attending to this you will confer a great favor on me, and it may result advantageously to yourself.

</p><p>I recd yours a few days since, and but for the condition of my health should have come up on Monday last. I am troubled a great deal with my lungs at present and am afraid to go from home to stay over night. I think I shall be able to come up some day this week.
</p><p>In reference to the Canal I think it has not been usual for the Executive to more than barely refer to the Canal and submit the reports to the Legislature The canal by the act placing it in trust for the Indebtedness as entirely taken out of the control or management of the State by giving the Bondholders a majority of the board and retaining only one Trustee. Consequently the state has nothing to do with it except to pay the interest on the indebtedness leaving the Canal to pay the principal or to pay on the principal from the Sales of land lots belonging thereto and from the net earnings of the canal of course You are not [illegible] to say much about the resources and Earnings of the Canal and cant know much of it except by reading the printed reports in years gone by of the board – which have been annually printed and circuited in pamphlet form as well as the Journals of the house. I should barely refer to it
</p>

<p>as one of the great thoroughfares and Commercial outlets to our produce, and submit the reports &c.
</p><p>I have spent a very uncomfortable winter thus far and if I was able would go to Kentucky or if possible to New Orleans to spend the Winter. I shall come up to Springfield in a few days
</p><p>Enclosed herewith is a paper I find belonging to the papers accompanying the Payroll I gave you I wish you would hand to Mr Miner in the Auditors office.
</p><p>I suppose you have very little time to read long letters therefore I will bring mine to close & wait until I see you – by the way the Grand March dedicated to Govr Yates by E Sailor is a very fine thing at least the professor who gives my Della lessons in Music says so.

</p><p>Dr Sir I write you at the request of Mr Thos. H. Antcliff who was wounded at the battle of Shiloh through both arms, & from which he can never recover so as to be able to labor again. He was orderly Sargeant of Compy A. 17th Ills Vols & his son a lad of 15 years of age was drummer boy in same Company & Reg't. The boys name is Arthur T. Antcliff He was given a furlough to come home with his Father, & assist in taking care of him, but has never been discharged. From the helpless condition of Mr Thos H Antcliff it is necessary that he should still retain the services of this his only son, & for this purpose he desires that the boy may be discharged from his enlistment.

<hr />Mr Antcliff knows of no way of having the boy discharged except by your intercession. The boy was sick with the Measles when his furlough was granted, but has recovered from that & and has been of great assistance to his crippled Father, & indeed an indispensable help. Curtin or

I only desire to say that upon my return through Philada, I called upon him and his parents, and found them all keenly suffering the disgrace of his dismissal. I also found him to be a very intelligent young man with officer-like bearing, and very superior qualifications, as I believe, for the service. And I hesitate not to say, that whether the charges referred to were true or false, that if the disability is removed, and he is again permitted to accept a position in the field, he will be
