These letters are written by men who have been in his Brigade & know him well & are written to the personal friends of the writers, and avowed friends of my son.----

I will briefly enumerate the claims they advance. My son's long & arduous service from the beginning of the war always being on duty, unless disabled by sickness or wounds & his having made great business sacrifices to enter the service, his good moral character, his skill & bravery as an officer, his four severe wounds, two nearly fatal, his steady & faithful support of the Administration, his successful efforts to bring his Regiment up to vote, thereby securing the election of Kuykendall, the highly ammendatory report of Gen. R. B. Marcy, Inspector Gen U.S.A of First Brig - Dist. Memphis, commanded by my son - he having been acting Brig - almost, if not quite 18 months. I have good reasons to believe that Gen. Farnsworth, Hon. E. B. Washburn, Senater Trumbull, Hon Jesse [Morten ?] & John Wilson 3rd Auditor would act with you, in a request for his promotion. I feel entirely sure, if you will give it some personal attention, the matter will be secured. By so doing, you will lay me if possible ----

under stronger personal obligations than before should you be willing to use your influence in my son's favor & will telegraph me to my P. O. box 947 Chicago. I will forward to you at once the letters by mail. I am not willing to trouble you with them, without your permission.

Our approaching Fair increases in magnificent proportions daily. Our prominent business & professional men manifest more zeal & appear willing to give the great & holy cause as much time as they give to their own private interests. The country is becoming thoroughly aroused & will be systematically organized. This great Northwestern Fair will undoubtedly do honor to the noble states you have so long & so nobly represented as our Ex Governor & honorable Senator. We are proud to number you among our Vice Presidents.

I hope to be in Wash. about the middle of Feb. on business connected with this Fair which we hope will be the closing of the magnificent series of Jan. Fairs, originated by the women of the prairies. It would be a joyful welcome to me if I could find my son's well earned promotion secured. Your former goodness & my faith in you must be my apology for this intrusion.

I am therefore left a Lieut Colonel of Ills Vols without being attached to any Regiment and my pay may be stopped any day and I be thrown out of service. This would be very unpleasant to me as I desire to remain in service and do what I can with other loyal men to maintain our National existence and crush out traitors and treason. I also have a large family of sisters who are dependent upon me for support as well as a wife and my means being limited and business in civil life dull I feel that I need all that I can fairly and honestly make and at the same time I am very desirous of serving my country. Gen Strong will leave here about the 1st of August on leave for 60 days. He would have assisted me in procuring from the President the appointment of Additional Aide-de-Camp to some Maj Gen and had me assigned to duty on his staff but Congress has repealed the act authorizing the

As you have been so very kind to me since I have been in service I feel a delicacy in addressing you at this time, feeling that perhaps I am trespassing upon your valuable time, and that my importunities will become to you a bore, but I cannot bear the idea of being laid upon the shelf at this stage of the game, and therefore very respectfully but earnestly request (if it be perfectly consistent with your view of justice and propriety) that I be assigned to one of the Regiments now being raised for three years service. If this cannot be done will you have the kindness to write a letter recommending me for an appointment in the Regular Army and enclose it to me at this place. General Strong will join in the recommendation and present the papers in person at Washington. If you can grant me either of the above requests, I shall feel myself placed under renewed obligations to you and will earnestly strive to prove myself worthy your kind consideration. Please let me hear from you at your earliest convenience.

I am informed that the First Regiment of Illinois Cavalry has been mustered out of service.

Dear Governor Yates: - Since I last wrote to you many strange things have happened. In the first place our country is assailed by partisans, persons who wish to gratify their own ambition. In the first place our country is assailed by partisans, persons who wish to gratify their own ambition. They strove to compromise with traitors, thus acknowledging the act, and at the same time giving them another far better chance than ever to cut our throats. But how was this answered by the rebels? War! and preparations for war.

Yes they have been indulged in to so great an extent that they imagine they can take Philadelphia and Washington. But thank God, they did commit an act

But a change came over Egypt as if by magic, and our part of the state seems to be a unit for the Government There are three or four counties near the R.R. that have been divided but I think that they will be all right shortly. In all the counties bordering upon the Ohio River the people are right at this time. To be sure there are a few such men as Bill Green of Massac that

Dear Governor.

Yours of_____ was duly received. In accordance with your suggestion I showed it to Mr Medill. He was pleased with it. He says that the opposition wont win, that they cant beat you, and he shall be party to no such undertaking. He says he shall stand aloof from the fight and Keep the Tribune perfectly neutral; that his preferences are with you, and that he hopes you may succeed, and thinks you will when the time of election comes. I learn (not from him) that parties in Washburne's interest have asked that the columns of the Tribune be thrown open to them, for the publication of affidavits affecting your character for sobriety etc. and that Mr Medill refused to accede to the demand. He would have nothing to do with attacks upon you. It was said to Medill that you were "drunk" at Fulton, and that affidavits could be provided to that effect. I told M. that it was a d__d lie, and that I was willing to make affidavit to the fact that you left Fulton sober etc.

As you say in yours, the matter looks all right now. It is generally conceded even

by the warmest friends of the other candidates that your election is in effect a fact accomplished. I hope to be able to congratulate You upon your election early in November. I see by the papers that Green is elected in the Marion Senatorial District after all. Is he a friend of yours?

Dear Sir,

I received a notice from Mr. Hatch Secy of State yesterday, stating that one George Chandler had been appointed a Notary Public as my successor, as my time had expired &c.

I was appointed a notary by Gov French in /47 & have held the same commission ever since, through the administrations of Mattesen and Bissell I was undisturbed. True the office is not of much value, but it was quite convenient to me in my office, in the course of business, and I must confess I was somewhat surprised to be ousted, even in this little matter to make way for a boy. But I cannot believe, that you did it merely for the purpose of reminding me that you were "Governor," especially when I have give the Republican party my entire influence and support as long as you have, and have contributed to your success nearly as much as any one else.

And still more especially, when I can prove in a court of justice if need be, that you are indebted to my personal friends who were in the convention for your nomination in lieu of Judd. I would have spoken of it to you when I was in Springfield in Feby. had I shall anticipated

a removal, The Office was not vacant & the commission ran till my successor was appointed and qualified. You have seen fit to remove me, without a cause, for you certainly had no reason personal or otherwise to do me an injury, unless you make it a rule to stiletto our friends and if that is your character, I have been very much mistaken in my estimate of it. I am not clamorous for executive favor. - and this that I had was a small one. - Indeed so small that it is scarcely worth quarrelling about, but I consider the removal a kind of a personal affront and don't like it and say so plainly. I am not however going to secede

Yours &c

Yours &c

On the 10th May last we shipped a case of Musket Caps by Adams Express to William Bishop Springfield Ill & addressed to your care. This was done by permission of the Police department of this city & we had no reason to suppose they would fall into improper hands when consigned to you. The US Marshall of your District informed us sometime since that he had seized them from some suspicious circumstances & desired us to inform him of the particulars of the purchase &c which we promptly complyed with & although we have requested him twice to report to us what disposition was made of them

or see that we were reimbursed we have received no reply whatever.

Inasmuch as we in this as in all other instances make use of every possible safeguard to prevent our goods from falling into disloyal hands & as these were consigned to your care with that [referred?] (although it was not so requested by the purchaser) we take the liberty of asking your Excellency to see that the matter is properly & promptly adjusted, or advise us what course has been pursued with regard to them. Please excuse the liberty of intruding upon you with this matter - but the circumstances seem to justify us in this course

Dear Sir

Very Truly Yours
