Surgeon in the Army and your reply was that I would first have to pass an Examination before a Medical Board. Now I would ask where that Medical Board is located, so that I may pass Examination. I would ask if after I pass Examination and report favorable would that be sufficient garrantee for a commission. I would also wish to know if a Surgeon furnishes his own Instruments & Medicine or dont The Government furnish them. Please give me the above information and you

Some time ago I send a letter to the Right Honorable F. A. I did not like to join one of the Volunteer Regiments, as I have a very good business situation & a family depending from my earnings, so that I had no time to raise a Company; besides, I am not satisfied with the elections of officers in a great many volunteer regiments which seldom have elected the right men.

I was born in the year 1826 in the City of Luxembourg, where my father was commander of the Prussian Artillery; in the spring of 1844 I entered the Prussian army in the 30th Regiment of Infantry, was promoted 1846 lieutenant in the same Regiment, fought all the battles in the Revolution of 48 & 49 & therefore got decorated by the Grand Duke of Baden with the Zachringer Loewen Order; In 1853 I resigned my office on Account of not being able to give the required security to get married & came to this country. I started first in St. Louis a Alcohol Distillery & lived there till 1858, when I failed in business on account of the hard times & went to this city, where I reside since that time. I am now travelling agent for Mr. Theodore Kraefft 77 South Water street, to whom & many other leading merchants here & in St. Louis I can refer You.

From the above statement Your Excellency can see if my service could be of any use to my adopted country & I am willing & ready every minute to serve the State to the best of my ability. I have further to remark to You that I made myself acquainted with the American tactics.

Dear Sir!

Having learned from the Newspapers that a general order has been issued, constituting a Board of Examination for Surgeons of the Army, and calling on medical men to offer their services to the government of the U. States, I hereby respectfully tender my personal services as Surgeon in the Army, provided in the Board of Examination there will be placed at an interpreter Dr. A. W. Heise, Surgeon of he 11th Regimenet of llinois Volonteers at Camp Hardin, Villa Ridge, who understand the German language perfectly and who is the most learned physician that I know of all german physicians in this country.

I have studied Medicine at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, as witness whereof I possess the Diploma of said University and further I will state, that I have practized in the city of Chicago for the last five years. Therefore I do not fear an examination at all, provided it be in the German language and you please to call Dr. Heise than an interpreter

My knowledge of the English language is sufficient for ordinary purposes, yet I fear, that a scientific examination would be too much for me, if I had to speak in a tongue not perfectly familiar to me.

With the highest respect I have the honor to remain
Your obedient servant,
Andrew Adam M.D.
