Sir,

About the 20th Nov last we forwarded you a petition for the pardon of William Tucker convicted in our court in June 1863. signed by the judge and a majority of the jurors who tried the case but have heard nothing of the fate of our petition except that no pardon has as yet reached the prisoner. A former petition had been presented by the mother of the prisoner Mrs Mary Tucker of Buffalo N.Y. to whom your secretary addressed a note that your rule required the petition to be signed by the judge and a majority of the jurors and therefore her petition could not be considered. She forwarded that letter to us when we at once obtained the signatures of the Judge & a majority of the jurors to the petition we forwarded to you, supposing that a pardon would be granted immediately. Will you have the goodness to inform us whether or not the petition has ever been passed upon and if so what decision was made upon it. We feel somewhat anxious about this matter as we think the subject an eminently fit one for executive Clemency

Respectfully Yours

However, I perhaps have no reason to complain, since those remaining with the command have suffered & endured so much while I have been (as a soldiers would say) in God's country.

It was quite a love feast to me to meet so many of my old associates in perfect health, none dead and none wounded. and better than all the most perfect harmony of feeling as regards political questions, creating so much excitement at home.

Col Ben is in good health and in good credit as are officer. his brigade consists of the 2nd Iowa Cav, 6d Ills Cav, 7th Ills Cav, old "K" 1st Ills Arty, he commands the Dist laying between La Fayette & Grand Junction.
Van Pelts case, justly demand, that he should be allowed to go home now while he can. He has been in Service Since July 1861, and has never been allowed to go home to his Family. He was Chief Commissary of Genl Sheridans Division at Murfeeborough. He and his trains were captured at Lavergne & his [trains?] destroyed.

He was paroled & has been Sent here to rest in Camp Chase until exchanged. He can just as well occupy the time with his family.

He can be at home. His position on Genl Sheridans Staff, is kept open for him and will be. He is an excellent officer. Do have your Governor act to get him a chance to go to his family - for when at Springfield Govr Yates will have the power to let him go on furlough.

I feel strongly in this case. My only Son, was the Chief Quartermaster on the Staff of Genl Jeff C Davis. He & Van Pelt have served together all through Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee & other places for a year & a half, and were captured at Lavergne together & came here together. My son was transferred to his home at once - while Van Pelt has to remain here. Do have him transferred home. A mere letter from Govr Yates will do it.

I was at there Camp a few moments yesterday. I saw Jas Yates Dick Ellis and the other boys from Berlin in Capt Harris Company. They are well and in good spirits. Dick seems to be a little dissatisfied with some of his officers otherwise, he is doing well. Jas Yates looks better than I ever saw him before. I think the service agrees with him much. I am now assigned to Col. Griesons Staff. Who is now

I saw a man yesterday from Jackson Tenn he is a resident of the place - and seems to be very well acquainted with Henry - he says Henry is well, in fine spirits, and still in Comd of the ordinance stores, at that place.

This town I judge from its general apperance has been a place of no little importance but its parks and other ornamental surroundings are now only decayed relics of a once beautiful and aristocratic town. We have Contrabands here innumerable. I think they are the most degraded specimens of humanity I have ever witnessed. I would write more but, as I have an opportunity of sending this to Memphis to be mailed I must close.

Friends,, of the Union,, of the hapiness,, of the purity & wellfare of our nation a few words to you from one who thourougly loves & respects you as a nation & people,, In reference to the trouble that now exists between the north & south,, the cause of the war is known more or lefs to all the people of both Sections of our country,, The war has comeupon us & it now stands us in hand to get rid of the Same The great queery naturely comes up here how are wee to do it,, Some are in favour of putting itdown by force of arms, while others are in favour of a compromise,, Some seam to be willing to strike a deviding line running through from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean & letting the South have all the country Lying South of said line,, letting the south make laws & regulations to suit there owninstitutions of Slavery &c&c

I will now give you my oppinion about putting down this rebellion by force of arms,, In my oppinion it never can be done to stay put down in that way,, You may crush it for a time, but like a volcano it will burst fourth again with all the fury of former times as soon as She has gained strength sufficient. No twoo nations can exist & live in peace under one constitution while one is free & the other Slave,, There isone of two things will have to be done to a dead moral

2

cerainty before wee will ever have substancial peace that is to either let the South go as a government to itself or wipe Slavery out of existence,, letting the South go as government to itself I fear is rather a shackling business to,, Too Shackling to stand for any length of time,, especialy when allmost every nation on earth as so mutch down on Slavery,, No,, Slavery will have to be put down here in this country as it was in England france & other European Countrys,, it is too mutch against the will of nations generaly. It is too mutch against what is moraly right according to the Scripturs,, Amalgimation one of the lowest vilest & blackest one of the most ungoldy Sins that could be committed by man is carried on in the Slave States with as little thought or cerremoney as going to bead,, Pass through one of the Southern cities if you please your eyes will meet a Sight that is enough to turn the most inveterate negro worshiper against the institution of Slavery. You see families after families of negroes probily the mothers of the same with part of there children black part yellow & part you could hardly tell which they were white folks or negro,, Now Shall we as a pople who proffess to be capable of self government allow such helish work as amalgimation to go on, when wee now have it in our power to put it down, provided we onley put our Shoulder to the wheel & keep the thing rolling since it has started & think God been started by the amalgimationests themselves Yes we will keep the thing rolling we will never stop till the last negro in America is colonised freed & set off as a distinct race to themselves, wee will never stop till ours

3

is a decent country to live in,, Wee will never stop till it can once more be said yong America is free from the eternal curse of Slavery,,

It was not the hatred that I had against the Southern people that induced me to present my body as a Sacrifice & target in this war,, No,, I can Say honestly & frankly that I like the Southern people I like them for there hospitality & open hartidness,, but I do not like there institution of slavery & never did,, It was for purifying our Country that called me out, It called me from Companion it called me from Father Mother brother & Sister It Called me from home where peace & plenty reigned all round,, It called me to the wide tented field of hardships dainger & toil,, Nor never will I be willing to return till this trouble is settled on a pure principal on a fare on a just Principal Suppose the rebles were to come back into the Union as is the wish of the greater portion of Citizens & Soldiers, what would things be bettered. Not one [Iota?] but millions upon millions of Dollars worse off that is if they were Suffered to return with there Slaves how long would it be till this family quarrel would be stirred up again with all the hatred & bitternefs of former days,, No,, Friends & Soldiers it will never do to suffer them to try to stick themselves back into the Union as long as one is possessor of a darky ,,but just so soon as they come out boldly & above bord & declare themselves Emancipationists declare

4

Slavery one of the curces of the land,, Then it will begin to look as though they were trying to get at what was for the wellfare of our nation & themselves Another queery comes up here,, How are we to get so many thousands upon thousands of the black scaps away from here & remunerate the owners for them. It is better to commence the work now before they increase to such uncountable & frightful numbers,, The work has partly begun now, in one Sense of the word, Secefsion is the first step,, Owners of Slaves who can prove themselves loyal to Constitution & Union pay them for there property part or all its value,, Those that have turned a traiterous hand gainst our Goverment I presume feel as though they did not need the aid or help of Unkle Sam Conciquently they ought not to expect anything for theirs,, Enough money has allready been Spent in this war to have bought & colonised every Slave in America,, If you had named such a thing as buying & colonising the negroes you would have been looked upon as crazy man hardly capable of keeping up his own trowsers at the commencement of this rebellion,, but I hope the people are beginning to get there eyes open by this time, to a sence of knowledge to know that if Slavery is the mooving cause of this war which it surely is we will never have peace hapinefs & prosperity till that corn is removed,, I am fully persuaded in my own mind, if Slavery was removed from the bounds of the United States Our Country

5

in a few years would prosper far better then it has for years past,,

This one thing will go to proove it to a certainty & that is the Northern States,, See if you please how mutch faster they have grown into wealth & power then the Southern States,, Now what is the cause of it is it because they have a ritcher Soil or is it because they have a more realiable article or articles for exportation then the Southern States or is it because they have free white men to do the labour & exticate the goald from the Soil by there own industry

It is obivious to any reflecting mind that the latter is the cause To Seperate or devide our once glorious Union will never do

No,, wee must stand togeather firm as the Ocean in its bead,, while we Stand united as a bundle of arrows no living power or nation can break us,, but just as Soon as the the bonds of union are broken then its easy for any power to crush us into attoms,,
Yes we will stand to geather,, we will never suffer our selves to be devided & ruined We will stand togeather, & if neades be will bid defance to all the ballance of the word & the rest of mankind throwed in, Oh if our union could once more be accoplished & Peace made what a thill of joy would echo through our land from Shore to Shore,, What would be the joy of the Soldier Sick & tired or war to get to return once

6

more to there quiett & peaceful homes,, What a joy it would be to the anxious wife who has been looking long & wishfuly for the return of there husbands to be again united with them, Oh what a joy it would be to the Father who has left a no of handsom prattling babes,, Oh what would be his joy to take them into his arms one after the other & plant kifses upon kifses on there sweet-roasy Cheeks Oh what would be the joy of the young fare Mifs who has spent so many sleeples nights pondering in her mindthe saifty & wellfare of her absent Soldier lover Oh what would be her joy at his return,, How pleasant it would be to all ears & eyes to See our country once more commencing to prosper & here the buisy hum of buisness from evry quarter,, But I fear our bright hopes will never be from the way things are going,, I fear for the Sake of petty games & party predgice the leaders of our land will stand with arms folded & tearful eyes on the disgraceful block of do nothing,, looking down the dark & yawning gulf of dispondency & See our once happy & prosperous county go to ruin See thousands upon thousands of brave manley Soldier forms sink beneath the devouring flame of war.

I can pen nomore to contemplate this thing is the most painful thing of my life

I will close, I hope all will do there utmost for the mantainence of "the Union & for what is justice between man & man
